Mlb 2023 (3 Viewers)

I love the way the Steven Strasburg camp tried to make the Nat’s owners into villains by trying to make it seem like they were going to host a retirement night for him.

That is like a being angry at a bank for cancelling a party for its most prolific bank robber.

The Nats were going to pay him in full, then backtracked and now are going to carry him on the roster even though he is no closer to being able to pitch than before. This all comes amidst the Nats cutting costs in various areas. So, how does this make Strasberg at fault here?

Interesting. That's better info than I have. Guess the Nats would rather continue the pay schedule of the contract than the payoff. That move sounds like the Lerner's, top to bottom. But, it is their money and the contract was signed. -- Al

Found a couple of articles, Brad, and it seems that, once again, the Nats are just being the Nats, trying to find the chaepest way out. One article questioned why the Nats would bother carrying Stras as the money is going to be paid, one way or the other, so filling a spot on the 40-man roster would seem to be an odd solution. Who knows how the Lerner's think. Heck, they extended Martinez again, a nice guy, but a manager that seems never to learn, especially in regards to handling his pitching staff. Oh well, it's not my money or team, just my heart. -- Al

Al, we were probably reading the same articles. I can only think that the Lerners didn’t want to pay him upfront and that they’d rather have the obligation on the balance sheet so a buyer assumes the obligation.

Al & Brad:

As always, I respect your baseball knowledge and passion.

I am not trying to take sides in the usual billionaire vs. millionaire battle.

Since signing his $245 mil. contract Strasburg has pitched 31.3 innings or approximately $782k per inning.

Plenty of blame to go around, you’d think at this point everyone involved would be happy to slip away into anonymity.

You would think so, right? Meanwhile, I have to figure out how to buy groceries this week... -- Al

Jason, if it was pay for performance, yes.

Somehow this reminds me of an incident I had with a fellow attorney. We were both in the bathroom and I said “how’s it going Vic?” He thought for a second and said “Some days the company gets you and some days you get the company.” Mystified, I said “Ok, Vic” and left.

In this case, Strasberg got the company.

Or put another way; "Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug."

Very few pitchers make it to the ML and the really good ones are few and far between. I understand how important quality pitchers are but I don't think any pitcher is worth what they pay them. Starters play maybe 30 games. Relivers pitch maybe a inning or 2 at a time. Of course I think they are all are overpaid but at least players in other positions play a lot more games. I just don't know why these teams constantly lock themselves in these huge contracts. When will they learn.
I was looking at what they call quality starts and the Braves who are probably the best team right now have 55 QS in 140 games so 85 games weren't QS and they have a good pitching staff so their starters fail QS in the majority of the games.

IMO, no sport needs a salary cap as badly as baseball does. Even basic rookie salaries are way above the working man's pay, people who teach our kids, arrest the criminals, and run into burning buildings. But, throwing and hitting a baseball is much more important, right? -- Al

Good starting pitching, plus a good closer, is the difference between winning and losing. They are paid highly because there aren’t a lot of good ones around. Hence, the excellent ones will command a high salary. It’s as simple as the law of supply and demand. You can generally find decent offense but good starting pitching? That’s another story.

Never going to happen, as I’m sure you know.

Brad:

I agree, but no need for Strasburg and his camp to look for a going away party.

I guess $245 mil that you did not earn does not buy the happiness it used too.

Urias has been arrested on domestic violence charges in LA. That is a death sentence there. Bauer's career was ended based on allegations that proved false. LA King Voynov was exiled. It's a terrible crime that should be fully punished by law enforcement if guilty, but you could probably commit mass murder and get a lesser penalty from the LA professional sports organizations because of the politics.

After witnessing domestic violence first hand as a child I applaud those that give victims the benefit of the doubt.

Say what one will about their chances in the postseason, by almost any measure it’s been a remarkable season. And a pretty fantastic run after cellar dwelling up until the 90s.

Atlanta (96-50) clinched in 146 games, their second-quickest clinch in the divisional era. The division title was the Braves’ record 26th, two more than the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

The Braves have seemingly made winning the East a rite of September since the 1990s and this year’s team looks loaded enough to win their third World Series since moving from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. Over that span, Atlanta won 11 straight NL East titles from 1995-2005, and the World Series in 1995 and 2021.

Austin Riley became the third Braves player to reach 35 homers, joining Matt Olson (51) and Acuña (37). The Braves are tied for most players with 35 homers in a season on one team in MLB history.

The Braves are on pace to finish with 106 wins, which would tie the 1998 braves for the most wins in the franchise’s nearly 150-year history.

Atlanta won 28 of 33 games between May 31 to July 8 to build a 9 1/2-game lead and win Wednesday night by 17 games.

Not sure I can remember the last time the Orioles have been in a meaningful series in mid September?? Rays have the experience but the O's aren't going to walk away, should be a awesome series and I'm just excited to be this excited in September!!!!!

Would love to see the O's take the East, but they have to leave Flaherty out of the rotation. He has been a disaster, outside his first start as an O, since coming over from the Cards. -- Al

Well, Sammy, we can hope Flaherty comes through, but unfortunately for me, I can't watch tonight's game because it's being shown on Apple pay TV, which I refuse to pay for. I will watch the Nats instead, and UMD football, both on my already paid for cable channels. Good luck O's, I'm sorry I will miss such an important game but I'll be checking the score every so often. -- Al

Not looking good Al, being no hit by the Rays, 2-0 Rays headed to the 5th...I'm just wandering if the Orioles are just a year away ?? Just a very young team, still hoping but the wrong time of year to lose 4 in a row
