Mlb 2023 (3 Viewers)

Great first weekend of August for the B/W corridor in terms of baseball. The O's swept the Mets in a 3 game series that gives the O's 70 wins on the season and they now lead Tampa by 3 games and 3rd place Toronto by 7.5 games. Last season, it took the O's until Sept. 2 to reach 70 wins. In the NL, the Nats swept the Reds up in Cinncy in a 3 game series, gaining a measure of revenge for the Reds sweep of the Nats right before the All-Star break. This gives the Nats a 49-63 record, still in last place but they are playing much better ball than last year when it took them until Sept. 8 to reach 49 wins, by which time they were 40 games under .500. Nats have a shot at 70 wins this season if they can go 21-29 over their last 50 games. It won't be easy with their schedule but it's something to aim for. -- Al

There's a big story breaking across baseball that the LET"S GO O'S!! suspended their announcer for being critical of the team, comments to the effect that they've had a tough time in the past winning in Tampa.

So for that, he got suspended.

There has to be more to the story than that; if not, wow are the LET'S GO O'S!! owner and management thin skinned.

After being a laughing stock and a dumpster fire of a team for years, they finally turned it around, now this?

Jesus, relax and enjoy it, imagine they were picked by just about everyone for fourth in the division and barring a late season choke job, they are going to win the division.

Man does this make them look small minded.

Again, there HAS to be more to the story.

I'm going to have to look into this. Haven't been near a sports show today as it was an O's off day. I took a break and 'boom!', this happens. George, you have to be right. There must be more to this story. Never been a hint of trouble in the booth that I am aware of. -- Al

Not to disparage other teams or owners but the O’s have a history of doing this going back to the great John Miller.

Years ago I asked Al (Lancer) why the O’s let Miller go and he mentioned that ownership did not like his criticisms.

I looked into it and the O’s tried to say that Miller wanted too much money and they didn’t like him being on ESPN.

A further look revealed that they simply hated Miller’s comments about the team, especially its owners.

The Angelos family has never been a real popular owner (think Steinbrenner or Dan Snyder) and has been sensitive to criticism since taking over the team in 1993. Peter Angelos canned Miller in '96, and now it looks like a similar situation exists with Kevin Brown and John Angelos. Brown's statement was really rather mild and didn't implicitly criticise any individual. Nothing more than what any announcer might say in passing regarding road game losses. Really mild. But the Angelos' have proved that being thin-skinned must run in the family. It's a very unfortunate distraction for a team in a pennant race for the first time in years. Idiocy. -- Al

Reminds me of how social media handled the COVID situation. They were the arbiters of truth and speech.

The Angelo's family remind of the Redskins X Snyder to a smaller degree....the only time you hear of them is something negative, it sucks but that's unfortunately what we have as a Owner, unlike Biscotti of the Ravens who is considered one of the better owners in the NFL...anyway Kevin Brown scheduled to be working the game Friday, along with the biggest series of the year so far against the Astros...really need to take this series.

It couldn't hurt for the O's front office to issue an apology to Brown for being overly sensitive and for over reacting. A little humility, please... -- Al

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. If the folks in charge had any common sense and decency, this wouldn't have happened to begin with. Or as Dragline told his fellow prisoners in Cool Hand Luke: "They got their rules. We ain't got nothin' to do with that."

Obviously not a Dodgers fan but it is great to see them retire Fernando Valenzuela’s number.

He is iconic on so many levels, not just from an LA perspective but from an MLB one too.

Progress in DC. This weekend the Nats swept the Athletics (I know, BFD), but they did it in great style, 2 walkoff wins, including yesterdays win with 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th, to win 8-7. The noteworthy point is that for a few hours, the Nats were out of last place in the NL East for the first time in years. They were in 4th place by mere percentage points until the Mets won their evening game to put the Nats back in last by a half game. It was heady stuff while it lasted... -- Al

It’s better for the Mets to finish behind the Nets. If they finish in the bottom six, their chance for the number 1 draft pick is very good whereas if they finish seventh they drop to at least 16th. Right now they’re tied for seventh with Detroit and Pittsburgh.

Honor the tank!

Curious, no Dodger fans or almost none contributing on this thread.

Many Dodger players are gone from recent times and yet they're doing so well.

Sure Freeman and Betts are there, but beyond that what do they have that other teams don't making them so successful this year?

Surely its not their pitching staff. They rank about about 25th in pitching in the MLB with a bullpen that can be charitably called the "arson squad".

So why are they doing so well, and why are there so few people commenting on it on this thread?

Just wondering,

Carlos

Braves win 6 out of their last 7 games - against both NY teams. Swept the Yanks. So Atlanta is on fire again. But in a good way, this time!

Close to 160 years later, Atlanta finally gets revenge vs the Yankees.

Well done.

Better late than never! Heck, now more (former) Yankees move here than vice-versa. We play the long game…🙃

I'm a Dodgers fan but confess that baseball is not a sport that I can now watch without falling asleep. As a kid, I would follow them and watch all the games. Now the thought is like torture. I haven't seen a single game this season. Glad that they are doing well, though. The recent string of playoff collapses hasn't helped. The same movie. The Dodgers come in as the favorite and get rolled by the hot team who goes on to win the WS. The regular season and playoffs are like two different sports. The regular season is a marathon. Deeper teams do better over the course of the season. The playoffs are a sprint in which less talented teams can shorten the roster to narrow the disparity. And then anything is possible in a short series. The element of luck, the slow play, endless pitching changes, and late start times make the playoffs unwatchable.

Today is the day I officially a have turned the page on the 2023 MLB season regarding the Red Sox; losing two out of three to the Nationals, that's it, enough is enough.

I wondered what happened to Jeter Downs and that other stiff who plays second base the Red Sox dumped; they landed on the Nationals, great, isn't that just swell.

And the latter tomato can hit a home run this series to boot.

The Patriots have my attention from here on out; adios 2023 MLB season, it really sucked this year, I'll tune back in come playoff time rooting for the Braves to win it all.

Two out of three to the Nationals; Mother of God.

Hey, I represent that. The Nats are hot (or what passes for hot in DC sports) right now. Todays win made #55 on the season, equaling their total from 2022. Baby steps. At least the O's have managed to stay in 1st place for more than a day, so things are going relatively well in the B/W corridor for the moment. -- Al
