Mlb 2023 (1 Viewer)

The old ways are fine for older fans like you and me but unless they start attracting newer and younger fans, the game is going to wither away and die. It needs to adapt; it can’t stay static. That’s why the NFL is so successful, the NBA too. They’re fast paced games. MLB needs to do what it can to make it faster paced.

I totally understand the need to speed the game up, but in the long run I think it will dilute the game with a hurried pace, and we have no facts it will shorten the length of a game, Hell, it may prolong the game if the new rules benefit batters, the pace of the game has been around well over a hundred years, do we have to change everything just to say, yup, we changed things.

It won’t prolong the game. It will shorten it. If you look at box scores from 50 years ago games were played in around two hours and change. They need to try to get back to that and remove all the delays players take in the course of an AB.

I'm very old school when it comes to my baseball, but I am willing to give the new rules a chance to shorten the game, as long as it doesn't do anything to the integrity of the game. At 3+ hours, a 9 inning game is just too long for me and my shortened attention span. Play ball!...quickly... -- Al

Mike "The Human Rain Delay" Hargrove.

Ortiz used to drive me nuts too; step out, spit in his batting gloves, slap them together, futze around, get back into the batters box already.

Seeing a game in person is 100 times better than on TV, even with the length, there seems to be a better pace.

There is nothing in the world like a day at the ballpark, love mid week day games, just something special about it, or a night game in August.

I take it the Braves aren't a fan of the new rules today, Bottom 9th Braves get called out on clock violation...game ends in tie...gotta love progress 👍

Why are the games so long now compared to when I was a kid. Is it because the players piddle paddle around so much or maybe a pitching change after 1 or 2 batters all the time. The old timers must cringe when you hardly every see a complete game anymore. I do like it that they can't put 7 players on one side of the field.

Mets game clocked in today at 2:33 so that’s probably what MLB is looking for. The Angels game was even shorter, 2:16.

I admit when I wrong, looks like the pitch count and batters in box might work, after watching a Spring game it looks to pick up the pace, I still hold my opinion to wait and see once we get into the regular season and playoffs when every pitch counts, so we'll see, but so Far so good.

I like what I've seen so far, as limited as that exposure has been, but like you say, the regular season will be the deciding factor. -- Al

I always thought long games were simply part of MLB going back to the origins of the game.

However on a recent episode of PTI Tony Kornheiser talked about how he had his scorecard from the first game at Camden Yards in 1992. The total game time was 2 hours and 3 minutes which was apparently close to the average time for games in the 90’s.

I remember as a kid, when we used to plan activities around a televised baseball game, we used the 15 minute rule for an inning, thus a 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 hour game. Worked out well, on average. Times have changed. -- Al

For baseball fans of a certain age, former NYY 1st Baseman Joe Pepitone has passed away at age 82. RIP, Joe. -- Al

New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz tore the patellar tendon in his right knee during the celebration after Puerto Rico’s WBC victory against the Dominican Republic. He will need surgery and is expected to miss the season.

It’s one of those things. It definitely hurts to lose the best closer in the NL, if not MLB but we’ll get by.

Injuries can sure damage a team. The Nats have lost pitcher Cade Cavalli to TJ surgery for 2023. He was counted on to be in the starting rotation for the rebuilding Nats. Oh well. Next in line, please. -- Al

Not quite on the same level.
