I was messing around today chopping up a few more figures doing something that i wanted to try for awhile now but never got around to it. I took some of the french in greatcoats and turned them into Russians.
I used heads from blackcat figures and Hat Russian backpacks with the swords cut off. I had to cut some detail from the french figure like the water bottles and the grenadier shoulder epalates????(spelling?) They still need a bit of work but are just about finished.
I also made a Russian Pavlov grenadier using the head of one of the 7 years Prussians, pretty easy conversion, just a simpler head swop to the Hat Russian figure.

And last but not least a trio of Prussian landwher made from CTS rebels.

I reworked my russians in great coats to look more like Russians. The french great coats were much shorter then the Russian ones, so I made them longer. Here are a few photos of the reworked Russians along with a photo of the way I had them before.
I used 2 part putty to make them longer, do they look better now?
I also did a few more including 2 I made from Conte figures, one is a WWII G.I. and the other a Mexican with 2 part putty great coats.
Here are a few photos!

Yes they DO look more Russian. Great blending and drapery. I like the "Whoa Nelly! Hang on to your Shako!" figure.

Scott you,d also have that "Whoa Nelly hang onto your shako" lets get the hell out,a here look also if you saw what just happened to the guy on side of him!{eek3}
I might do a few more of these? I just have to dig out some figures and eye them out at bit. The good thing about a conversion like this is you can use just about any figure almost. You pretty much just need the right feet, the rest of the figure is covered in putty.
I used plastic strips for the straps and just glued them on and back packs from the hat russians and Fubars Russian heads which are much better then the Hat ones in my opinion and the shako tassels are easier to cut off.

Awesome work Fish! I see your poses in a broken Russian square diorama!
Great stuf!

Harold we think a lot a like! I was thinking the same myself. I don,t have enough Russians in greatcoats yet to do a square, I,d have to mix in some more of your Russians. I did the greatcoat figures to try a couple of winter retreat from Moscow type mini dios and that,s why I tried making the mounted Cossack, I hope the mold works??? I started work on a few more great coat figures for a rally square under attack from cavalry. There just fleshed out at this point but you can get an idea of what they,ll look like. I,m going to do them like the other 2 greatcoat converted Conte figures.
I used Conte G.I. parts again and I dug out a couple of extra metal heads you had sent me.
Here are some pics!

Does the flag bearer look better alone or helping the wounded figure????

Could the TSSD GIs with Overcoats work for you ?
The way you sculpt the greenstuff makes any era available to convert.
Conte's wounded GIs and others are really versatile.
Thanks for posting.
Your final diorama will be impressive.

Holding the wounded figure.I can see the disintegrating square taking form. Should be very dramatic.Glad you're having fun!
I dremeled off all the detail on a couple TSSD Germans in greatcoats { a long time ago} and adorned them with Russian heads, packs etc. and they turned out great. Only did 2 though. You have a ton of patience and talent.
Great use of the plastic parts!

Harold I remember that conversion you did of the kneeling firing pose converted from the TSSD German in the great coat!^&cool That figure came out great and I still have that photo saved somewhere. I was thinking about that figure you did when I made these guys. I thought about using a couple of those figures for these Russians in Greatcoats and Yes Denver I did also think about the TSSD G.I. in great coats also. I still may get around to doing something with them??? I have a set of those kicking around somewhere down stairs but not being a WWII guy I only have the one set and would like to keep them as G.I.,s? I have lots of options to choose from with the greatcoat covering just about the whole body, I just have to pull out a bin of figures to look through and ideas will start to fly but these are time consuming conversions and I ,ve got my hands full right now with just the few I have in the works right now.

Thanks a lot guys! I,ll post some pics when I get them finished. I,m still wanting to get out all my Prussians and Russians and dig out a bunch of french cavalry and throw together a big dio. I haven,t done one in awhile.

I can certainly appreciate the amount of work that goes into each an every one of them and the results speak for themselves. Awesome work Tim.

You realy do have great work ethic Fish well done....and that last shot is a winner!
Rob,

A Progress report on the Russian in greatcoat conversions. I also did a few more. The base figures are Conte WWII, Mexicans and a couple of civil war guys. Now to get some paint on these guys.

Fish,

I just noticed the two Conte conversions of men in loading positions. Nice. The Contes make great "base" figures for conversions as well as the TSSD figures.
