JAMES BOND---the latest rumor claims Matthew Vaughn (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, KINGSMAN) is the "top choice" to direct the next James Bond movie. Earlier, Vaughn said about directing an 007 movie, “I don’t think- They don’t like me. I don’t know. You know, to be blunt. I love Bond. It’s obviously a huge influence on me."
Another recent rumor said Christopher Nolan would direct the next two James Bond movies.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS---HARRY POTTER star Miriam Margolyes, in her new memoir, OH MIRIAM! STORIES FROM AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE, accused Steve Martin of abusing her while filming their scene, "I was hit all day by doors opening in my face; repeatedly punched, slapped and knocked down by an unlovely and unapologetic Steve Martin — perhaps he was method acting — and came home grumpy with a splitting headache...Let it not be said that I have never suffered in the name of art. Steve was undeniably brilliant, but horrid to me.”
Martin denied Margolyes' accusation, "When I first read Miriam Margolyes pejorative account of our scene in Little Shop of Horrors, I was surprised. My memory is that we had a good communication as professional actors. But when it is implied that I harmed her or was in some way careless about doing the stunts, I have to object. I remember taking EXTREME caution regarding the fake punch – the same caution I would use with any similar scene."
He added, "She assured me she felt fine, and we did a few successful takes and stopped. There was never any physical contact between her and me, accidental or otherwise, in this scene or any other we shot."
Director Frank Oz supported Martin, "I always rehearse physical actions in slow motion. The scene was supposed to include a fake punch. It’s puzzling what she’s talking about. It’s not the Steve I know or anyone knows. He's always been professional and respectful of everyone on all of my shoots."
Last year, Margolyes also accused Arnold Schwarzenegger of farting in her face while filming END OF DAYS, “He was actually quite rude. He farted in my face. Now, I fart. Of course I do — but I don’t fart in people’s faces. He did it deliberately, right in my face. I was playing Satan’s sister, and he was killing me, so he had me in a position where I couldn’t escape and lying on the floor. And he just farted. It wasn’t on film, it was in one of the pauses, but I haven’t forgiven him for it.”

JOHN WICK---producer Basil Iwanyk said Keanu Reeves wanted John Wick to be killed off in CHAPTER 4, "After the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movie, making these films is so exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally. By the end, he’s always like, 'I can’t do this again,' and we agree with him. The guy is just a shell of himself because he just goes off and goes for it. He was like, 'I wanna be definitively killed at the end of this movie.' We were like, 'You know, we’ll leave a 10% little opening."

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT---Michael Giacchino posted about the color version of the movie which airs on Disney+ on October 20, “We spent a lot of time working on this color version. We wanted to pay homage to the incredible vibrant color in horror films like the ones Hammer made. A whole new look for #werewolfbynight.”

ORANG IKAN---Callum Woodhouse and Den Fujioka will star in this World War II monster movie in which a Japanese ship carrying Allied POWs is sunk by an US submarine. Two survivors, a British POW and a Japanese sailor, are stranded on an island where they are stalked by a hybrid man-fish monster, the Orang Ikan.
Producer Eric Khoo said, “I grew up on a steady diet of horror movies, which ranged from the supernatural to monster flicks. One of my childhood favorites was the classic 1954 monster movie, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. During the pandemic I came across HELL IN THE PACIFIC, a 1968 war film about a Japanese soldier and an American serviceman marooned on an island trying to kill each other off. This was the lightbulb moment for me – what if an orang ikan had come ashore in that scenario? In order to survive, the two mortal enemies would have to team up to battle this terrifying beast! What an exciting premise!”

GHOSTBUSTERS---Leslie Jones, co-star of Paul Feig's female-led 2016 movie, commented on the racist backlash she received when the movie premiered. In her upcoming book, LESLIE F*****G JONES: A MEMOIR, she said, "Of all the women in Paul’s remake of the movie, I was the one who got taken through the ringer. I wonder why . . . Oh, right, because I was a Black girl. I was being sent films of being hanged, of white guys jacking off on my picture, saying, “You ****ing n****r. We going to kill you.” Why are people being so evil to each other? How can you sit and type “I want to kill you.” Who does that?"
She also criticized Jason Reitman for his comments about the reboot, "And it wasn’t just racist s**t, either — when I started doing this movie, this is when I really started seeing not only racism, but classism. Even the director of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Jason Reitman — who is the son of the original director, Ivan — said something unforgivable when discussing his new version that came out in 2021.
On Bill Burr’s podcast he said this about our version of Ghostbusters: 'We are, in every way, trying to go back to the original technique and hand the movie back to the fans.'
He did try to walk it back, tweeting, 'Wo, that came out wrong! I have nothing but admiration for Paul and Leslie and Kate and Melissa and Kristen and the bravery with which they made Ghostbusters 2016. They expanded the universe and made an amazing movie!'
But the damage was done. Bringing up the idea of giving the movie “back to the fans” was a pretty clear shout-out to all those losers who went after us for making an all-female film."

BEACON 23---the sci fi tv series based on the novel starring Lena Heady will premiere on MGM+ on November 12.

TRIVIA---four studios competed for the movie rights to Michael Crichton's JURASSIC PARK novel. Universal Pictures won the competition and picked Steven Spielberg to direct the dinosaur movie. The other three studios also had their designated directors for JURASSIC PARK if they had bought the movie rights. Columbia Pictures had Richard Donner (LETHAL WEAPON, SUPERMAN), Warner Bros. had Tim Burton (BATMAN) and 20th Century Fox had Joe Dante (GREMLINS). However, James Cameron sought the movie rights on his own, but lost to Universal and Spielberg. Cameron said, "I tried to buy the book rights and he beat me to it by a few hours...But when I saw the film, I realized that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been ALIENS with dinosaurs, and that wouldn't have been fair."
He added, "Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film. I’d have gone further, nastier, much nastier."

An alternative movie might focus on Ken with a different Barbie played by a different actress.

STAR WARS---David S. Goyer said he wrote a STAR WARS movie screenplay that would be directed by Guillermo del Toro, “I wrote an unproduced STAR WARS movie that Guillermo Del Toro was going to direct. It was about four years ago. I also have a scriptment for the origins of the Jedi also for STAR WARS that I wrote for them [Lucasfilm] that took place twenty five thousand years before the first STAR WARS film. That would’ve been…I got to do the VADER IMMORTALl thing, but dabbling in STAR WARS would’ve been fun for me.”
He commented on why Lucasfilm rejected his screenplay, “It was just a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. But it’s a cool script. Have you had Guillermo on the show? You’ll have to ask him about that the next time he’s on. It’s a cool script. There’s a lot of cool artwork from it that was produced.”
Del Toro posted his confirmation and appeared to hint the movie would focus on Jabba the Hutt, "True. Can't say much. Maybe two letters "J" and "BB" is that three letters?"

STAR-WARS-FOTOR.jpg

SICARIO 3---producer Basil Iwanyk confirmed the third movie is underway and he hopes Benicio del Toro returns, “I can’t wait for SICARIO 3. I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn’t get old.”

PITCH PERFECT: BUMPER IN BERLIN---Peacock cancelled the series after originally renewing it.

TRIVIA---Joss Whedon wrote ALIEN: RESURRECTION and wanted Bill Murray to play the evil Dr. Wren, and he thought the reunion of Murray and Sigourney Weaver from GHOSTBUSTERS would help the movie's appeal. Daniels said earlier that any reboot would be set in the same universe as the original series, but it may not involve the original characters. John Krasinski and Mindy Kaling have said before they would be interested in a reboot.

THE-OFFICE-2-FOTOR.jpg

SUPERHEROES---Martin Scorsese continued to criticize comic book and superhero movies, “The danger there is what it’s doing to our culture. Because there are going to be generations now that think movies are only those — that’s what movies are. They already think that. Which means that we have to then fight back stronger. And it’s got to come from the grassroots level. It’s gotta come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean? And hit ’em from all sides. Hit ’em from all sides, and don’t give up. Let’s see what you got. Go out there and do it. Go reinvent. Don’t complain about it. But it’s true, because we’ve got to save cinema.”

SUPERHEROES-FOTOR.jpg

STAR WARS: AHSOKA---AC Nielsen reported the Disney+ tv series drew 829 million minutes in its premiere week. By comparison, THE MANDALORIAN Season 3 premiere had 823 million minutes, ANDOR had 624 million minutes and OBI-WAN KENOBI had 1.03 billion minutes.

TAXI DRIVER---after a British tabloid claimed Robert De Niro would return as his TAXI DRIVER character Travis Bickle for a British Uber ad, Uber confirmed De Niro would be in its ad campaign, but not as Travis Bickle, “We are filming with Robert De Niro in London for a new Uber UK campaign, which will launch later in the year.” De Niro's spokesperson also denied the campaign will have a TAXI DRIVER connection.

STAR TREK 4---director Lindsey Anderson Beer left STAR TREK 4 to direct PET SEMETARY: BLOODLINES, but she commented on the status of the latest STAR TREK sequel, “It is, it’s still on the tracks. I love that project, and it was another one that I had to hop off of to direct this movie, and that was a hard thing to do. But I love everybody involved with that project.”

STAR-TREK-3-FOTOR.jpg

THE WALKING DEAD: DARYL DIXON---the spinoff series has a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 90% and an audience score of 89%, which makes it the highest-rated series of the zombie franchise. By comparison, the original series has a critics score of 79% and an audience score of 78%.

BATGIRL---co-director Adil El Arbi commented on the cancelled movie, “It was really a blend between Nolan and Burton. Gotham City was a more realistic world, and the story was very straightforward and emotional. It was more of an actor’s movie without a lot of visual effects. We don’t really like CGI, so we used a lot of miniatures. There was this one great action sequence where a truck crashed into a tunnel, and we did it with miniatures like Burton did in BATMAN. It remains the coolest thing we’ve ever done in movies — it was old-school filmmaking, and we’ll do it again!”
He added, “I think about BATGIRL every day. I replay the making of the movie in my head, thinking, ‘What should we have done differently?’ But as we say, that was God’s plan. We can only hope to come back to DC one day.”

COMMUNITY---Chevy Chase commented on why he left the Dan Harmon comedy series, “I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately. I felt a little bit constrained… Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good. It just wasn’t hard hitting enough for me.
I didn’t mind the character. I just felt that it was… I felt happier being alone. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.
I have no idea if [Harmon and I are] OK. I’ve never been not OK. He’s kind of a pisser.”

STARZ---Starz cancelled HEELS, BLINDSPOTTING, RUN THE WORLD and THE VENERY OF SAMANTHA BIRD (in production).

TRIVIA---James Earl Jones said George Lucas paid him $7,000 when he picked Jones over Orson Welles as the voice of Darth Vader in STAR WARS, “George wanted, pardon the expression, a dark voice. So he hires a guy born in Mississippi, raised in Michigan, who stutters. And that’s the voice. That’s me. I lucked out, from all these so-called handicaps, for a job that paid $7,000! And I thought that was good money. And I got to be a voice on a movie.”

THE DEPARTED---Martin Scorsese said Warner Bros. wanted the movie to continue as a franchise although the two main characters died, “What they wanted was a franchise. It wasn’t about a moral issue of a person living or dying.”
He said test screening audiences loved the movie with the deaths of the two main characters which led to his leaving Warner Bros., “Then the studio guys walked out and they were very sad, because they just didn’t want that movie. They wanted the franchise. Which means: I can’t work here any more.”

THE-DEPARTED-2-FOTOR.jpg

THE HUNGER GAMES---Francis Lawrence said he would be interested in directing more prequels, “I liked being part of the series originally because the stories are great,” Lawrence said. “But what was always gratifying was that they were always about something. Suzanne [Collins, franchise author] always writes from a thematic foundation. The original ones were all about the consequences of war. [Songbirds and Snakes is] about the state of nature. That’s what makes them feel rich and not superficial, and I think it’s why they’ve stood the test of time, honestly.”
He added, "If Suzanne has another thematic idea that she feels fits into the world of Panem — whether that’s with new people [or] familiar characters [like] Finnick, Haymitch, whoever — I’d be really interested in looking at it and being a part of it,” Lawrence continued. “But I don’t have any pull of just going, ‘I would love to do Finnick’s games.’ He’s a great character, but what’s the thematic underpinnings that make it worth telling and relevant?”

TRIVIA---the original THE EQUALIZER tv series starred Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a retired covert agent for "The Company" and "The Agency", nicknames for the CIA. The theme song was written by Stewart Copeland, former drummer for The Police. Ironically, Copeland's father was Miles Copeland, Jr., a founding member of the CIA and its World War II predecessor, the OSS.
Miles was a student at the University of Alabama, intending to be a physician like his father, but his love for jazz led him to dropping out of college to pursue a music career. He performed with Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, Dave Brubeck and others. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the US entering World War II, Miles joined the Army where he was so impressive, he was personally recruited by Gen. William "Wild Bill" Donovan, founder of the OSS intelligence agency. In 1947, Miles played a key role in establishing the OSS's successor, the CIA.
Stewart said about his father, "My childhood wasn’t a regular upbringing. We moved around the Middle East and mixing with so many fascinating people. I shared my father’s passion for music, which eventually led to my career with The Police and beyond, and his job shaped me, too. In sharing his story, and my family’s story, I hope to shed light on what it is truly like to be the son of a CIA agent."

DC STUDIOS---DC Studios co-head James Gunn commented on canon confusion in upcoming projects, “Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year – a sort of aperitif to the DCU – & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think its okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.
And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy.”
Gunn said three actors are locked-in to their roles: Xolo Mariduena as Blue Beetle, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and John Cena as Peacemaker.

ALICE IN BORDERLAND---Netflix renewed the series for Season 3.

STAR WARS---Gareth Edwards commented on a second Lucasfilm movie idea he was offered when he chose to direct ROGUE ONE instead, “I read one [of the ideas], and in my head, I thought, ‘I can see why they want to do that; I’m not the guy for that; I’m really curious about what this other idea is. I started reading this [Rogue One], and I thought, ‘where is this going?’ and that was the pitch that [Industrial Light & Magic VFX supervisor and CCO] John Knoll did.
It was two pages or so, and I read it, and the whole time, I was still thinking, ‘Where is this going?’ What is this?’ and right at the end, it was, spoiler alert, Princess Leia, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is the connected prequel to A NEW HOPE which is the whole reason I am doing anything.
I spent the first ten or twenty minutes going, ‘You can’t make this film; this is like sacrilegious. This shouldn’t happen,’ and then I realized, ‘Are they offering this to me?'”

STAR WARS: AHSOKA---Lucasfilm released a poster of C-3PO after his appearance in AHSOKA's Episode 7. Anthony Daniels posted, “I was so pleased to shine briefly in the iconic Ahsoka – had such a perfect time with the lovely cast and crew on set, in the amazing Volume – and now, so touched by the kind comments from viewers who appreciated 3PO being there for the beloved princess. Thank you. Everyone.”

STAR TREK: PICARD---Patrick Stewart said he wants Paramount Pictures to develop a Jean-Luc Picard movie, “I am gently pushing Paramount to let us do one single PICARD movie. Not a NEXT GENERATION movie, as we have already done four of those. This would be an expansion and deepening of the universe as we’ve seen it in STAR TREK: PICARD. I’ve discussed this with Jonathan [Frakes], Brent [Spiner], and LeVar [Burton], and they are all game.”
He added, “Jonathan is my first choice to direct it.“

TRON---Walt Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee said she plans to propose a TRON animated movie, “I will promise to do it at my next directors’ lunch. Once a month, I just have lunch with all the directors together, and I’m gonna say, ‘There has been a request. Is there anyone here, who has been dreaming of that to happen?’ We’re filmmaker-driven, so then I can blame them, if it doesn’t happen. No, I’m teasing…I’m gonna write that down and bring that to them. Unfairly, I haven’t done that yet, so I will. I love that.”

TITAN---MindRiot Entertainment is developing a movie based on the Titan submersible disaster in which five people were killed during a trip to the SS Titanic wreckage. Co-writer Jonathan Keasy said, “The Titan Tragedy is yet another example of a misinformed and quick-to-pounce system, in this case, our nonstop, 24-7 media cycle that convicts and ruins the lives of so many people without any due process. Our film will not only honor all those involved in the submersible tragedy, and their families, but the feature will serve as a vessel that also addresses a more macro concern about the nature of media today.”

THE WILD ROBOT---DreamWorks Animation movie underway based on the novel. Chris Sanders (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON) is the director.

TRIVIA---IS PARIS BURNING? was a movie about the Allied liberation of Paris in World War II and starred Jean-Paul Belmondo, Alain Delon, Orson Welles, Yves Montand, Kirk Douglas and Gerd Froebe. The movie was filmed in black and white mainly because the French government would not allow realistic red Nazi swastika flags to be displayed on public buildings. Consequently, fake green Nazi flags were substituted whose real color could not be recognized by the audience. However, the end credits of a liberated Paris were in color.

FRIDAY THE 13TH---Blumhouse producer Ryan Turek said he wants to reboot the horror franchise, “Jason (Blum) and I are definitely in agreement that FRIDAY THE 13TH is the thing we would love to get our hands on. I really want to go back to the basics. You don’t need too many ingredients for a FRIDAY THE 13TH film. You need summer camp, you need campers, and you need Jason Vorhees in a mask.”
He added,“Listen, I’ve gone on the record saying HALLOWEEN is the ultimate slasher film for me. That’s my favorite slasher film of all time. But FRIDAY THE 13TH as a franchise is one that I just bow down to. I just love everything about it. And if we were able to live in both worlds, like we do with Halloween, then to be able to live at Crystal Lake for a while would be so incredible.”

FRIDAY-13-TH-2-FOTOR.png

THE CREATOR---Gareth Edwards said a sequel is not planned for the AI movie, “My favorite thing about cinema versus television is that cinema ends. My favorite part of the story is the ending. And I really like it when you sort of work backward from the end, and everything’s leading up to this climax, where there’s a kind of mic drop moment, and in the credits roll, they’re my favorite kind of films… There’s no intention to do part two or anything like [that]…. I’m very happy to see this being a standalone, one-off self-contained story. [Those are] my favorite types of films.”

CHARLES DARWIN---Michael Caine said he will play Charles Darwin in an upcoming movie which will be his last movie, “Yeah. I play Charles Darwin. And that’ll be it. I won’t do another one after.”

SILVER SABLE---writer/director Lindsey Anderson Beer said the Sony Pictures superhero movie appears to be cancelled, “It was something that Sony was looking at and then, as far as I know, is not currently developing. I had to hop off that to another project at the time. I was only on it as — people hire writers as, it’s called a ‘weekly,’ I was helping them out. But yeah, I’m not sure.”

HEELS---showrunner Mike O'Malley said the Starz-cancelled series is being shopped around to other networks, "Yeah, we are actively doing it [shopping it around] right now. And some of the actors are still under contract. Obviously, the [writers’] strike just ended. I couldn’t have any conversations about this [until now], and granted, they just told me on Friday.
But not only are we trying to [find a new network], I really believe the Starz executives when they say they want to see a future for the show too, because they did invest a lot in the show… I really do think it’s going to have a life someplace else."

HOME ECONOMICS---co-creator Mike Colton said the ABC-cancelled tv series will be shopped to other networks.

TRIVIA---more James Bond movie trivia.
Priscilla Presley was the top candidate to play Bond Girl Stacey Sutton in A VIEW TO A KILL. However, Presley did not play the role, and there are two versions as to why not. Version One is that Presley had a contract obligation with the hit tv series DALLAS. Version Two says Presley was not interested in the movie.
The Stacey Sutton role went to the co-star of another hit tv series, Tanya Roberts, who co-starred on CHARLIE'S ANGELS.

STAR TREK: PICARD---Patrick Stewart, in his new memoir, MAKING IT SO: A MEMOIR, said there was a series finale post-credits scene that was unfilmed, “The third season came off magnificently. But its final scene, in which the reunited crew is gathered around a table with drinks, sharing a toast, is not how it was originally supposed to end. I had a different idea, which I brought to the writers a few months before we wrapped the series.
‘What I’d like to see at the end of the show,’ I told them, ‘is a content Jean-Luc. I want to see Picard perfectly at ease with his situation. Not anxious, not in a frenzy, not depressed. And I think this means that there is a wife in the picture.’
The writers came up with a lovely scene. It is dusk at Jean-Luc’s vineyard. His back is to us as he takes in the view, his dog at his side. Then, off-screen, a woman’s loving voice is heard: ‘Jean-Luc? Supper’s ready!’
Is it Beverly Crusher’s voice? Laris’s? Someone we don’t know? It isn’t made clear. But Sunny [Ozell, Stewart’s current wife] was set to record the lines. Heeding his wife’s call, Jean-Luc turns around, says to his dog, ‘C’mon, boy,’ and heads inside. Dusk fades to night, and Picard fades into history.”

THE COMPLETE AND UTTER HISTORY OF BRITAIN---ITV announced it has recovered the 1969 pre-MONTY PYTHON six-part satire series that starred Michael Palin and Terry Jones, "The series had been sitting in the ITV vaults though mis-catalogued for decades, but through the identification programme we were able to make this remarkable find.
We flagged it to our colleagues in streaming, had the film cleaned and restored from the 16mm telerecordings and then finally made available to our viewers for the first time since the original broadcasts."

TRIVIA---Mel Gibson's controversial father, Hutton Gibson, appeared on JEOPARDY! in 1968 and won $4,680 in five shows and retired undefeated as dictated by the game show's rules. STAR TREK: NEMESIS---in his new memoir, MAKING IT SO: A MEMOIR, Patrick Stewart commented on Tom Hardy co-starring in the poorly-received STAR TREK: NEMESIS, “I didn’t have a single exciting scene to play, and the actor who portrayed the movie’s villain, Shinzon, was an odd, solitary young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy.
Tom wouldn’t engage with any of us on a social level. Never said, ‘Good morning,’ never said, ‘Goodnight,’ and spent the hours he wasn’t needed on set in his trailer with his girlfriend.
He was by no means hostile – it was just challenging to establish any rapport with him. On the evening Tom wrapped his role, he characteristically left without ceremony or niceties, simply walking out of the door.
As it closed, I said quietly to Brent and Jonathan, ‘And there goes someone I think we shall never hear of again.’ It gives me nothing but pleasure that Tom has proven me so wrong.”

STAR-TREK-NEMESIS-FOTOR.png

LABYRINTH---director Scott Derrickson commented on the status of the sequel to the 1986 Jim Henson movie, “I don’t know what’s happening with that. We never got the script all the way to a place where the studio wanted to make it, but I was very proud of the work that we did on it.
And it’s a hard, hard project to turn into something commercially viable, because it’s so imaginative and surreal that there’s no way that it can be done cheaply. And at the same time, it’s so daring and different that it is a tough movie for a studio to feel competent that it has enough commercial value to earn a profit.
So I think that it’s a tough nut to crack, but all I can tell you is I’m very proud of the work that we did on it. We certainly had a great film in mind.”

BEETLEJUICE---for its 35th anniversary, the movie will return in Dolby Cinema for one day only on October 18.

GODZILLA 2000---to celebrate Godzilla Day, GODZILLA 2000 will return to theaters for one night only on November 1.

TRIVIA---in the new book SURELY YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS: THE TRUE HISTORY OF AIRPLANE! by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker, David Letterman talked about his audition for the role of pilot Ted Striker, “I get out there, and they had set up a cockpit for the aircraft with chairs. I had a chair, and there was another chair where the copilot would be. We did the scene once, and then they came in and gave me some notes, and then we did it maybe two more times. And I kept saying all along, ‘I can’t act, I can’t act, I can’t act,’ and then one of them came to me after the audition and said, ‘You’re right: you can’t act!’”
He added, “It was all so good-natured that I just laughed my way back to the car. I never felt any sense of disappointment, because from the very beginning I told them, ‘I can’t act.’ And then I was right, and we all ended up parting as friends. So, it was a good time...When I saw the movie, it was just delightful, and I was delighted to see it knowing that I didn't have to look at myself. Because that would've ruined it. If not the whole movie, it certainly would've ruined it for me.”

MASTERS OF THE AIR---the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg nine-part World War II miniseries, a companion to BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PACIFIC, will premiere on Apple TV+ on January 26, 2024. A photo of Austin Butler (ELVIS) was released, and the synopsis says, “Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, MASTERS OF THE AIR follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of MASTERS OF THE AIR. Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
Ranging in location from the bucolic fields and villages of southeast England, to the harsh deprivations of a German Prisoner of War Camp, and depicting a unique and crucial time in world history, MASTERS OF THE AIR is enormous in both scale and scope, and a genuine cinematic achievement.”

Tonight there were no placards teasing that AHSOKA would return in the immediate future. Natch, the ending WGA strike and the ongoing actors strike has put off production for some time.”

STAR WARS---director David Gordon Green (HALLOWEEN, THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER) commented on rumors he is working on a STAR WARS movie with Lucasfilm, “I’ve met with some folks there, but there’s never been a project or idea."
He added, “I would never say no because every time I say never is when I get the phone call that makes me excited about something,”

TOTAL RECALL---a rumor claims Sony Pictures is considering a second remake of the 1990 sci fi movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

THE HUNTING WIVES---Starz miniseries underway based on the novel whose synopsis says,“Sophie O’Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet, and she’s feeling bored and restless.”

A MURDER IN HOLLYWOOD---Terence Winter (BOARDWALK EMPIRE) is developing a movie underway based on the book A MURDER IN HOLLYWOOD: THE UNTOLD STORY OF TINSELTOWN'S MOST SHOCKING CRIME which told the story of the turbulent love affair between Lana Turner and Johnny Stompanato, the enforcer for mobster Mickey Cohen. Stompanato was stabbed to death by Turner's daughter, Cheryl Crane.

TRIVIA---while filming BACK TO THE FUTURE, Universal Studios head Sid Sheinberg suggested changing the movie's title to SPACE MAN FROM PLUTO, “Most importantly, I think it avoids the feeling of a ‘genre’ time-travel movie.” Writers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale did not reply because they were afraid to incur Sheinberg's wrath. However, the movie's executive producer, Steven Spielberg, wrote back, “Hi Sid, thanks for your most humorous memo, we all got a big laugh out of it, keep 'em coming.” Sheinberg, out of embarrassment, dropped the title-change suggestion. Later, Sheinberg said the entire story was "bulls**t".

STAR WARS---Guillermo del Toro commented on his movie about the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt that was cancelled by Lucasfilm, “We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy. We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property, it’s not my money, and then it’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away. Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not. I always turn to my team and say, ‘Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world. We designed great stuff. We learned.’ You can never be ungrateful with life. Whatever life sends you, there’s something to be learned from it. So, you know, I trust the universe, I do. When something doesn’t happen, I go, ‘Why?’ I try to have a dialogue with myself. ‘Why didn’t it happen?’ And the more you swim upstream with the universe, the less you’re gonna realize where you’re going.”

STAR-TREK-GUILLERMO-DEL-TORO-FOTOR.png

FRANKENSTEIN---Christoph Waltz has joined the cast of Guillermo del Toro's horror movie that also stars Andrew Garfield, Mia Goth and Oscar Issac. Del Toro said, “I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”

THE WALKING DEAD: DARYL DIXON---showrunner David Zabel commented on the season finale, "I'm so proud of the season finale. The season finale has it all. It has drama, it has tenderness, it has intense action, it has heroism, it has difficult moral choices. It excavates some of Daryl's past — some of which we're familiar with, but some of which is new information that we learn about him that refers to a lot of the things that the fans of the show will remember about his relationship with his brother and his family.
So it's a full payoff to the larger story of this epic journey through France, but it's also a full payoff to the intimate story of Daryl as this reluctant hero trying to just get back home. And it ends with a couple of moments that are pretty jaw-dropping."

JESSICA LANGE---the Academy Award-winning actress, 74, is retiring and blames superhero movies, “I’m not interested in these big comic-book franchise films. I think that they’ve sacrificed this art that we’ve been involved in…for the sake of profit. I don’t think I’ll do this too much longer…Creativity is secondary now to corporate profits…The emphasis becomes not on the art or the artist or the storytelling. It becomes about satisfying your stockholders. It diminishes the artist and the art of filmmaking.”

AUDREY HEPBURN---director Luca Guadagnino said the Audrey Hepburn biomovie starring Rooney Mara has been cancelled, “Unfortunately that project is not happening… It’s very sad, was a great script. Of course, a great actress to play Audrey. Maybe, one day.”

HEAT 2---Michael Mann said his next movie will be the prequel to his 1995 heist movie that starred Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, “Yes. Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel HEAT 2, which came out right when we were shooting FERRARI. It did very well. I plan to shoot that next.”
Mann commented on if FERRARI star Adam Driver would play the younger version of De Niro’s Neil McCauley, “Perhaps. We don’t talk about that yet. Let me put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on FERRARI]. We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other, and we had a great time working together artistically.”

FANTASTIC FOUR---director Matt Shakman commented on the cast status of the reboot movie, “Like I said, we’re in the middle of a SAG strike, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they get a great deal really soon and we can go back. Then, once that’s resolved, there’ll be a plan at that point, but I can’t say too much. There will be an announcement at some point! I know that the internet is very excited to find out, and I’m excited to share it. I just can’t do it yet.”

THE THIN MAN---co-producers Margo Robbie and Brad Pitt are in negotiations to acquire the movie rights to the movie series.

KANE AND ABEL---Sony Pictures Television has bought the rights to the novel trilogy. The 1985 miniseries based on the novels starred Sam Neill and Peter Strauss.

TRIVIA---in the Academy Award-nominated HEAVEN CAN WAIT, British school teacher Betty Logan (Julie Christie) travels to Los Angeles to demand that tycoon Leo Farnsworth (Warren Beatty) not build an environmentally-dangerous oil refinery in her hometown of Paglesham. She is not aware that Farnsworth was just murdered and his body is now inhabited by recently-dead Los Angeles Rams quarterback Joe Pendleton.
Paglesham is a real town of about 250 people, and historians think remains of HMS Beagle, the Royal Navy warship that carried naturalist Charles Darwin on his historic global journey, are in the town's riverbank. Darwin documented the voyage in his book THE VOYAGE OF THE BEAGLE in which he stated his theories about evolution and natural selection.

THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER---the sequel earned a disappointing $44.2 million globally and received a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 23% and an audience score of 58%. Universal Pictures paid $400 million for the movie rights, and now “almost certainly demand some degree of creative re-think for the next two films” for the two sequels planned. Director David Gordon Green hinted he might not return as originally planned.

DC UNIVERSE---VARIETY reported that none of the actors playing lead characters in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will be returning as their original characters. This includes Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Ezra Miller (Flash). Jason Momoa will not be returning as Aquaman, but he might possibly return as Lobo.

BLADE RUNNER---Ridley Scott recently commented on the classic sci fi movie, “[The shoot] was a very bad experience for me. I had horrendous partners. Financial guys, who were killing me every day. I’d been very successful in the running of a company, and I knew I was making something very, very special.
So I would never take no for an answer. But they didn’t understand what they had. You shoot it, and you edit it, and you mix it. And by the time you’re halfway through, everyone’s saying it’s too slow.
You’ve got to learn, as a director, you can’t listen to anybody. I knew I was making something very, very special. And now it’s one of the most important science-fiction films ever made which everybody feeds off. Every bloody film.”
He discussed the criticism the movie originally received, "I hadn’t seen BLADE RUNNER for 20 years. Really. But I just watched it. And it’s not slow. The information coming at you is so original and interesting, talking about biological creations, and mining off-world, which, in those days, they said was silly. I say, ‘Go f--k yourself.'”
Scott also commented on movie critic Pauline Kael's four-page negative review, “I was so crushed. I had a hard time making it, and yet I thought I delivered something special. And then to have it killed … It actually affected the release of the movie. I took the four pages and I framed them on the wall of my office. They’re still there today because there’s a lesson in that, which is: ‘When you think you’ve got it, you don’t know s--t.'”

AQUAMAN: THE LOST KINGDOM---Amber Heard had her role drastically reduced with two major scenes deleted due to her lack of chemistry with Jason Momoa. However, court records from the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial of Heard's doctor's notes show Heard blamed Momoa. The notes say Momoa wanted her fired, supposedly dressed as Depp to antagonize her, and he was drunk on the film set, “Jason said he wanted me fired...Jason drunk — late on set. Dressing like Johnny. Has all the rings too.”
Warner Bros. denied Heard's account. An inside source who was on the film set also refuted Heard's claims, “Jason works his *** off, likes to have a beer once in a while like everyone, but doesn’t show up drunk to set...And he isn’t dressing like Johnny Depp. He has always dressed in that bohemian style.” Supposedly, Heard's then-boyfriend, Elon Musk, sent a threatening letter to Warner Bros. which forced the studio to keep Heard, but her role was reduced.
The sequel supposedly has had poor test screenings which have led to major reshoots.

JOHN CARPENTER---John Carpenter said he might return to directing---under the right conditions, ”Get the right one or the right budget — yeah, I’ll do it. I don’t want to work that much, though. Compared to music, it’s so different because music is the purest art form there is. You don’t have to talk about it, you don’t have to explain it. I can play it, and somebody in Indonesia can just feel it. Across time, I can listen to Bach’s St. Anne and tears come to my eyes just like when I first heard it, it’s so profound. A human being wrote that. Wow. There’s no comparison to that in any other form. But unfortunately, I fell in love with movies, which is the craziest, silliest art form there is.”
He also commented on how directing affected his health, ”Not very well! I was a chain smoker, which had a terrible effect on my health. I was too stressed. I had to stop making movies for a bit. I had to have some space. You know, I am closer to the end than I was. I think about that now. I think about nothingness; what’s next. Anyway. I’ve got to tell you, I’m lucky as hell. I’m lucky.”

IRONHEART---Marvel Studios filed a US copyright which confirms Sacha Baron Cohen will play a "Mystery Man" in the superhero tv series. Fan speculation claims Cohen will play Mephisto.

TRIVIA---two actresses who co-starred in the NAKED GUN movies also appeared in THE HOSPITAL (George C. Scott, Diana Rigg). In THE NAKED GUN, Nancy Marchand played Los Angeles Mayor Lillian Barkley, and in THE HOSPITAL, Marchand played Head of Nurses Mrs. Christie. In THE NAKED GUN 2 1/2: THE SMELL OF FEAR, Jacqueline Brookes played Police Commissioner Anabell Brumford, and in THE HOSPITAL, Brookes played Dr. Immelman.
