Unbeliebable Rob- your dio real is breathtaking. The water effect is perfect , and the way the water color turns light brown-ish on the sandy shore is as good as it gets. I hope to some day be able to produce dios like this. I really enjoy looking at pics such as yours and I learn something new everytime. For instance, I did not know such an outstanding water effect could be achieved with grout. But I can see if one is talented w/ a brush and is patient, the results can be staggering. I could sit and look at this one for hours. I hope Santa brings you what you want to complete the defensive section:D! No doubt, the Germans on the hill will be know match for the brave British! :)

LOL! Yes my good friend Lord Tony Neville has given me many tips over the months and has requested no payment except a small amount of hard drugs and chocolate,as you know he produces some superb dio's for his displays,he is a wise wizard of scenery production and I am a humble student!.Thanks Tony.

Nicely done, Rob! Excellent work!:cool::cool::cool:

Greta dio rob, how long or how many hours did you put in to get the water right?

Thanks to all you guys, its very kind of you.

Hawkeye,it took hours and hours spread over many days.Every layer of paint, varnish and the grout itself takes at least 24hrs to dry properly,so progress was slow.On top of this the good old Royal Mail went on strike and so some materials and tools i needed were held up for around a week.

I also really take my time with my dio's,I know it sounds odd but i go through the building process for weeks and sometimes months in my head before I get started.I like to plan in detail first,if you dumped a load of dio stuff on me and said 'Get started' I wouldn't know where to start.By the time I sit down to work, I know just what to do,how to do it and in what order, its the only way I can do it I'm afraid.

I must thank my good lady too.I was going to make a Fighter Pen for my Hurricane, but my wife said 'Make something with a bit more action'!.She got me the second LCA and there was no going back!;)

Rob- your thread title says "Part 1"- would Part 2 be the Germans??

Yes it will mate.I'll be starting that after Christmas and it will consist of Bunkers Trenches etc.I will have all the stuff I need by Christmas and will be itching to get at it.I have recently read Horrific accounts of Shermans going right up to Bunkers on D Day and putting Shells through the slits to knock them out, this might feature in my dio.

That sounds pretty sweet to me!! Nice thing about having talent is that you can create your own unique stage rather than a store bought one like I have. I have decided with my Omaha dio to just focus on the beachhead and not even have any landing craft on them.

Just curious but how much room are you setting aside for this dio?? Mine is 4 ft long by 2 feet wide.

Cheers

Thats a very good idea Chris. If you can post some pics I'd like to see it.

Mine is 4ft long by 1 1/2 ft wide. The Bunker system/Trenches will I reckon be about 2ft long by 1 1/2ft wide. But that very much depends on how deep I want my defences and how carried away I get with doing them!.I'd like to include Bunkers,Trenches,an 88 position etc,but I must rein it in a bit or there will be no room in my office to sit and look at it!!;)

Rob

Rob,
Fantastic! Just get rid of those 20th Century new-fangled machines and pop in a 19th Century Royal Navy launch!!!!!:p Great job!
