N.f.l. 2010 season (1 Viewer)

I'd take him over Marino any day of the week plus Sunday and Elway as well...Joe......that's another matter. Not saying one or the other- I think they are the same guy in a different uniform. The scary thing about Brady is that he is cut from Joe's cloth but has Marino's stats. I think Joe benefited from a decent, stable runner in Roger Craig which allowed him to not hae to throw the ball as much. Brady hasn't really had a Roger Craig/Tom Rathman backfield for the same length of time as Montana did, ergo, he had to throw it more. Either way, as Joe was the QB or our generation, Brady is for this one. Sorry Peyton- not really.

Chris,

I think prior to Brady, I would have said Montana was the best, but like you said, Brady is Montana, but with better stats, and in my opinion, a better arm. They both played for far and away the best coaches of their respective eras (Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick), but Montana was also surrounded by a way better team.

Montana had Jerry Rice, the best receiver ever. He had a great slot receiver (at least as good as Welker) in John Taylor. He had another fantastic wide out in Dwight Clark ("the Catch"). He had the best overall defense throughout his career, led by Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, with the exceptions of 1985 (Bears), 1986 (Giants) and 1990 (Giants). He had Roger Craig and Tom Rathman in the backfield. And he never took a beating physically in a Superbowl the way Tom Brady did in 2007 (the two times Montana took a beating in playoff games, in 1986 and 1990, both against the Lawrence Taylor led Giants, he lost).

Great points all around, shame on me for thinking with these two together 6-10 was a possibility.

BB can indeed flat out coach, they always show him on the sidelines huddled with the defense drawing up strategy, unlike other HC's who just stand there like cigar store indians.

He is the defacto DC this year, it's not wonder the defense is playing so well. It's the youngest defense in football and he's really, really coached them up.

Next year, The Patriots have two number 1's, 2's and 3's, 6 picks in the first 96 draft slots.

The rumormill up here is saying after Pioli left, BB took over the draft too, which explains all the excellent picks the past two years, the last couple of drafts with Pioli in charge were terrible...........

Don't feel bad, George, I never thought the Giants would do better than 8-8 in 2007, or, for that matter, this year. However, if the Giants can win tonight and next week, they will win the Division.

Funny enough, I was convinced the Jets were going to start the season 1-5 in their first 6 games, go 8-8 and miss the playoffs, and was eating crow after they started 6-1. Looks like I might not have been too far off about the final record or them missing the playoffs, as I don't think they have a shot in hell of beating the Steelers, them vs. Chicago is a toss up, and the Bills have been in every game the last 5-6 weeks. The Jets could easily lose out, and miss the playoffs.

As far as Bill Belichick having all those draft picks next year, your Pats are going to be the Yankees of the NFL for the next 10 years, as long as Brady stays healthy. I'd be shocked if Brady doesn't win at least 2 more rings before he retires.

Brady and Montana have played on some great teams with great coaches. No doubt two of the best, but don't forget a guy like Kurt Warner who went to the Super Bowl three times with the crappy Rams and Cards. That's a borderline miracle. He also holds the record for the top three highest passing yard games in the Super Bowl! Won with the Rams against TN on a 73 yd pass with 2 minutes to go in the 4th Q to break a tie game. He had drives to tie the SB game against the Pats late in the 4th Q and put the Cards ahead in the 4th Q against the Steelers only to have his defense lose the game on the last drive. An incredible big game performer for a guy who was undrafted and started in the Arena Football League.

Warner is one of my all-time favorites. Very underated. When at the top of his game, he performed miracles with some good and some very average teams. -- Al

I agree completely, and if Santonio Holmes doesn't make a miraculous catch, he wins a second superbowl and joins that elite group of Quarterbacks who won more than 1 superbowl. His problem is, thorugh no fault of his own, he lost two of the three Superbowls he played in, so is not generally thought of as a Hall of Famer.

Speaking of Superbowl losers, how about John "I won't play for Baltimore" Elway, who managed to lose 3 Superbowls before he got lucky enough to win his last 2. One of my biggest disappointments in watching pro football was that Elway didn't lose all 5 Superbowls. I am not an Elway fan, by the way. -- Al

I still have that Sporting News edition for one of those with the marvelous headline (for us Al) NO DOUBT, BLOWN OUT!!!!!:cool::D

I don't really agree here. Big Ben's M.O. is last drive wins. Talk about ice in your veins, that is Ben. That superbowl could have easily been a blow out. The Steelers momentarily took their foot off the gas, Ben gets a huge sack and it lit fire under the Cardinals. I just don't think this is a great example.

Brady is great, so is Montana, Elway, Marino. Best ever, I don't know, hard to compare different generations.

Since I am partial to the Steelers, you have to remember you had an offense/defense combination that won 4 Super Bowls in 1 Decade. That is pretty good. You also have to give Ben credit, 2 Super Bowls already in his career and a perennial contender.

I guess the point I am making is that there have been a lot of greats and Brady is definitely up there and deservedly so. I just shy away from best ever.

As much as I respect Lawrence Taylor's ability, if someone asked me who the greatest linebacker ever, my opinion would be Jack Lambert. We all agree on who is great, but the greatest is always going to be a personal opinion. (IMO)

I had the Ravens -3 in a parlay with the Giants...the second half of the game was hard to watch...until Wilson intercepted Schaub for 6 to cover...;)

Now, that was a great Superbowl! Only the Riggins SB winning run tops it. -- Al

Tom,

With all do respect, that is your Steeler fan, rather than your reason or football fan, talking.

Big Ben had the worst game of any quarterback to ever win a Superbowl in his first win. Then, he had a better game, thanks mostly to that last minute drive, against a flawed Cardinals team who got into the playoffs at 9-7, had one of the worst defenses in the NFC, and did not belong in the Superbowl. Even with that, if one if his defensive players doesn't return an interception 101 yards for a touchdown with time expired at the end of the first half, the Steelers lose that game.

And frankly, comparing Jack Lambert to Lawrence Taylor is ridiculous. Lawrence Taylor is generally recognized as the greatest defensive player ever, recently ranked as the 2nd best player of all time by a nationwide panel of current and past players, coaches and sports writers, while Jack Lambert wasn't even ranked in the top 5 linebackers of all time. How do you put Jack Lambert over Ray Nitske, Ray Lewis, or Dick Butkus, much less Lawrence Taylor? Common man!

Hi Louis. I'm shocked, shocked I say, that you, a NY Giants fan, did not mention the great Sam Huff who lead the Giant defense during their glory years. That man could play football and we Redskin fans still revere him. -- Al

Al,

I know you are a Redskins fan, but those blowouts are not great Superbowls. The greatest Superbowls are the rare nailbiters, like the Giants vs. Bills (20-19, Scott Norwide), Giants vs. Patriots (17-14, the REAL catch), Steelers over the Cardinals (Santonio Holmes' miraculous catch falling out of bounds against triple coverage), Patriots vs. Rams (Brady's 1st last minute drive), Patriots vs Panthers (Panthers tie it up with less than 2 minutes to go, Brady does it again), and Rams vs. Titans (the Titan's receiver was tackled inside the 1 yard line with what would have been the go ahead score as time expired).

I love Sam Huff, who invented the middle linebacker position in the 4-3 defense, but I didn't want to sound totally partisan while calling our good friend Tom for being a Steelers fanatic.
