N.f.l. 2010 season (1 Viewer)

I have been screaming all season that the Giants need to (1) fire their special teams coach and (2) cut that horrendous rookie punter. Today they lost a game with a 21 point lead with 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter, principally because, (a) as I sat next to my friend Scott and said "they are definitely going to try a surprise on side kick here", the Giants special team coach didn't see it coming and (b) as time expired, that moron rookie punter, who had been instructed to kick the ball out of bounds, panicked, and kicked it right down the middle to the most dangerous punt returner in the game.

I have never, ever suffered through a worse Giants loss. If Coughlin doesn't fire the special teams coach and take direct responsibility for special teams and cut the punter before next week's game in Greenbay, he deserves to lose his job.

Jets win one they absolutely had to have. Whew...

Brad,
good game, it was a tight one, but as a Steelers fan, it hurt. We should have never put ourselves in that horrendous position at the end to begin with, that stunk.

That said, did Rex slip the side ref money to not call that pass interference????? Again, we put ourselves where we did, so its hard to complain, still stinks all the same.

When a team loses like that today everybody needs to take a share of the blame. Where was the offense in the last 7 minutes? Nowhere! You can blame the special teams coach on the on side kick but they still had a lead. Yes, he should have kicked it bounds on the last play of the game but where was the tackling? Nowhere! Where was the defense in the last seven minutes? You got it: Nowhere! When you have a 21 point lead in the last eight minutes, you just can't or shouldn't lose.

There were several key screw ups by the Giants in the 4th Quarter. The first was on offense: Mario Manningham simply dropped the football in bounds as he was tackled around the legs. There is no excuse for that unforced fumble which gave the Eagles the football at the Giants 25 yard line, and gave them 7 points.

The next disaster belongs to the defense. On a medium depth pass play to the tight end, the Giants safety went for an interception, consequently missed the tackle, and turned a 15-20 yard gain into a 70 yard touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, if I saw the onside kick coming, how did the special teams coach and 11 special teams players all miss it?

Then, on third and goal from the 9 yard line, Justin Tuck allegedly lined up in the neutral zone (they never showed a replay, so I suspect the refs blew the call), costing the Giants half the distance to the goal and an extra down.

On the next play (3rd and goal from the 4-1/2), I said to my friend Scott, this is clearly going to be a quarterback draw, I hope the Giants have the sense to put a spy on Vick. They didn't see it coming, and he ran into the end zone untouched.

Then, on the next drive, at third down at the Eagles 40 yard line, the Giants two wideouts on the left side (Manningham and Hagen) both miss the fact that the Eagles are sending a corner blitz from that side. Manning reads blitz and puts up a soft, easy to catch throw to the location where the hot read should be in the flat. Neither receiver breaks off their route, and the pass falls incomplete, forcing the Giants to punt back to the Eagles with 3 minutes left. They drive down against an exhausted defense which has been on the field almost the entire 4th quarter without any rest, and tie the game.

Finally, the punter not punting the ball out of bounds when the play calls for him to do so with 13 seconds left. And the rest of the special teams failed to make the tackle. The Eagles win with no time on the clock.

Still, the biggest screw ups fall on the special teams, which, frankly, have been among the worst in the league since Coughlin was hired. He can't seem to field decent special teams, and, as far as I know, has stayed with the same, horrid, special teams coach for the past 4 seasons. That, and his failure to cut that rookie punter, who has now directly cost the Giants 3 losses with his inability to catch good snaps, shanking of punts, and admitted panic from a slightly high snap. He sucks, and needs to be cut.

John Beck has been named the backup. It's hard to envision a third-string McNabb ever playing another down as a Redskin. He is toast. Regardless of who is right or wrong here, this situation is now like a cancer on that team. Better to cut him and be done with it than to let it linger for no good reason.
I don't know but they looked pretty good to me today; no signs of any issues they didn't already have and a better TD / Interception ratio than they have had all season.:) Losing by a field goal is a much better result than I expected and we took another step toward a better draft position.;)

One more comment and then I am getting over this loss. Again, I preface my comment by saying, that if you put yourselves in a position where a referee influences a game, then shame on you. AND as a Steeler fan, I am po'd at my team and our lackadaisical 3rd down conversions (too many short by a yard, etc. when it mattered).

THAT SAID, what is up with the officials as a whole this year?? They are god awful. Every game it seems as if there are crucial calls. Either the officials today are incompetent and blind or they are taking orders from Goodell thru a headset and deciding games. I am sure it is human incompetence b/c I refuse to believe that there are crooked refs, that I can't fathom.

And finally, what is wrong with a Free Safety putting his helmet in the chest of a receiver. This is NOT Ballet, it is football, Ronnie Lott is a hall of famer b/c of plays like that.

Goodell needs to go, his bs influence on the game is horrendous.

Enough of my rant. Honestly, the way the AFC is going, I fully expect the Patriots to paste the rest of us. Hopefully my Steelers finish out against Carolina and Cleveland and have home field. Let's see how we do, but this loss really stung me.

What a day in the NFC East. Who would have thought that such two high scoring shootouts would have occurred in a division known (or used to be) for it's defense. Giants pull the choke of all time and the Cowboys almost joined them. Vick is one dangerous football player. My Skins looked like crap in the first half, but, as has gone on all season, the "other" Skins played the 2nd half and almost took the 'pokes after trailing by 20 points. Not ready to anoint Grossman yet but he did look decent for someone who hasn't started a game since 2008. At least we didn't get embarrassed, we just lost. -- Al

Lots of crazy stuff today but it's hard to top the two guys on the Houston Texans defense who got into a fight. I can't remember ever seeing players fighting with their own team mates on the field. To add insult, they even drew a flag. And how about those Rams in first place with a chance to win their division even though they are 6-8?

Tom,

Whether you like it or not, the rules have changed and for the better. Too many guys are physical wrecks after their career is over or cut short. So, when you lead with your helmet you're going to get called for it. I saw it happen tonight in the NE game and the guy was properly flagged for it. There's no reason you should wind up as a cripple when your career is over.

I don't disagree, although, his helmet hit the ball, not helmet to helmet. I played, I understand the technique. Every big hit whether helmet or not is getting flagged, it has to be a directive from the NFL. Again, it is not Ballet and I believe Ronnie Lott walks the earth just fine today.

The officiating as a whole stinks. There is no excuse for the last minute of the Steelers/Jets, they were blatant interference calls that affected the plays and the game.

Again, I am not complaining further b/c we had plenty of chances prior to that and the Safety was a result of the worst offensive play call in history. A slow developing run play from your own 2 yard line, brilliant and hats off to the Jets for recognizing it.

JMO, but the NFL needs to address what is going to happen in the NFC West, where a team is going to win the Division with an "at best" .500 record and possibly a 7-9 record. This is a pet peeve of mine. I don't think a team should get into the playoffs without a winning record, division winner or not. If a team can't post a winning record, and wins the division, the NFL needs to eliminate that team and go to the team next in line by winning record and put them in the playoffs. How can the NFL take the chance (however remote) that a team with a losing record might make it to the Superbowl? It could happen and then the whole season has become a joke, as well as the NFL. The playoffs should be for the best teams, period. The .500 scenario is also possible in the AFC South. It needs to be addressed. -- Al

Tom,

For all the Ronnie Lotts we have that have survived without significant brain injury, we also have the Andre Waters' of the world. Andre Waters, a DB for the Eagles, committed suicide at the age of 44, because he had been depressed, which led to his ultimate death. A neuropathologist who examined Andre Waters' brain tissue after he died found that his brain tissue had degenerated into that of an 85-year-old man with similar characteristics as those of early-stage Alzheimer’s victims. Pretty sad.

On the more mundane topic of the game, towards the end, I did see a holding call that could have been called against the Jets but I think what really messed the Steelers up was the safety. Otherwise, the games goes into OT and we know how lucky the Jets are in OT in Pittsburgh.

I do agree with you.

Yes, as I said, I am just venting about the calls in this game and I agree, the Safety was all on the Burgh. DUMB DUMB. I don't care if we win the Super Bowl, I would fire Ariens the next day. He is an idiot. So are a lot of offensive coordinators. Nice call by the Jets on the bootleg, beautiful play, it fooled everyone!

My main grip with my post is the officials just plain stink NFL wide, they are awful this year. I can't remember a year where the zebras have mattered so much. The NFL has become like boxing, if you don't put away your opponent with a knockout lead, you can really get screwed!

Al, I agree with you too, the divisional losing records should not be allowed in the playoffs.

Pet Peeve? Has it actually happened? I cannot recall it ever happening. I do recall some issue back in the 80's where I think Cleveland was 8-8 and Denver was like 11-5 or so- Cleveland won the division, Broncos did not and were out.

I agree though, 7-9 should not qualify for a playoff berth. Welcome to parity

The Rams and Seahawks are tied for first with 6-8 records. The best they can do is 8-8. To compound matters, I believe someone on ESPN said they get a home game if they play a wild card team like the Saints who will have 10+ wins. This whole mess, though, is a product of expanding the playoffs to make more TV money. With so many teams qualifying for the playoffs, you almost have to have a few with .500 records.

Hi Chris. I just meant that it was a pet peeve that the possibility even existed to put a loser into the playoffs. It just shouldn't be allowed to happen. -- Al

I think there are teams who made it as wild cards as 8-8 but never a divison winner. The Rams are getting better but are not really ready for prime time yet.

However, the playoffs are going to be expanded so this may become a common occurrence unless they do something.

Maybe the NFL can just stop wasting time and declare everyone with a .500 record or better a playoff team. That way there can be football until May or so. -- Al

Don't give them any ideas. They are already moving toward an 18 game season. The sports industry greed knows no bounds. It's one reason I'm still uncertain about a college football playoff system. Maybe they start with four teams, but it would inevitably move to at least sixteen. The NCAA basketball tourny has something like 64 teams and are expanding.

That's about the way they do it in the NBA...everybody makes the playoffs...after the NBA regular season...eight teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs and are seeded one to eight...total of 30 NBA teams...16 teams make the playoffs...over 1/2 of the teams qualify...
