N.F.L. Season 2018-19 (4 Viewers)

pass interference should be challengeable...
I don't care how long it takes...
I want a straight game...

Every time a pass is thrown they could call PI. Next they will be reviewing every play for holding or the air pressure in the ball etc. They would still be playing. Here is how the Saints win that game. Brees throws to the open receiver in the end zone and they score a TD instead of flinging a wild pass out of bounds and hoping the refs make a call. Payton should man up and admit that it shouldn't have come down to that call. They were up 13 points playing at home in front of the loudest crowd in football. They blew it. He should take the responsibility for the loss. His play calling on that last sequence was horrific. Passing on first down instead of running and forcing the Rams to use a TO. They could have run the clock down and kicked the FG leaving the Rams with no TOs.

please don't compare a holding call (offensive or defensive) to a pass interference call...
pass interference is the most controversial call in the NFL...
and seems to be under the sole interpretation of that particular referee that throws the flag...
pass interference is the biggest game changing play in the game...
some of these QB's can throw the ball 75 yards...
this is a "spot foul"...
that's a whole lot of penalty...
I just want a fair game...
if it takes another 5 minutes to review it...
I'm fine with that...

Could they not treat it like any other call and add another challenge? That would limit the amount of time spent looking at PI. Presumably, every PI call in the last two minutes of each half would be examined.

The panel on one of the 9,000 shows on the NFL network (you know, the show where there are three former NFL players, one woman and they all yell and scream and talk over each other...………:rolleyes2:) said the league will be expanding the replay system next year.

Great, so now the games will take 5 hours with 4,000 reviews and challenges.

It's like allowing baseball managers to challenges balls and strikes; where does it end?

You could call holding on any play if you slow it down and review every block over and over. In your example, a team can throw a 75 yard pass and it becomes an 85 yard penalty when it is called back for holding. Bad calls don't make it an unfair game unless the refs are intentionally making bad calls against one team. There is a subjective element to certain penalties like holding and PI. If they were challengeable, every coach is going to wait until a crucial play and then challenge it on that basis. Every game would then be decided on video review rather than by the players.

I'm sorry...
I can't say it any different...
no penalty is as controversial as pass interference...
coaches and fans don't come unglued about a holding call as much as they do about pass interference...
they need to be reviewed by the camera crew if they are questionable...
the naked eye of a referee...
coupled with his personal idea of what is pass interference is not working at all...
and it won't make the game 6 hours longer...
again...
I can't say it any different...
I want a fair game...
I don't want to win or lose on a bogus call...

I agree with Mike here and I have ZERO skin in either of these games, only as a fan and end of day, it doesn't matter what the Saints did or didn't do nor the Rams did or didn't do, that was a PI blatant and admitted to by the NFL as well as the entire viewing audience on both sides, the call is NOT in dispute. It changed the game and the rules are in place to not allow that. Unfortunately, the referee blew the call and the Rams are going to the SB. That is all they are going to hear and see for weeks and that plays into favor for the Pats, Rams better get real thick skin and blinders going or else. Again, there is only 1 person to blame for this and that is the Referee on that sideline. He should be fired, they are paid way too much to miss that. In any job a mistake that bad s/b and would be a fireable offense, it is egregious.

As to the Chiefs, as I said, he was blatantly and stupidly offsides. I chalk Reid's frustration with that as to his response. He will always remember that one player lining up offsides cost them the game. I know that is not fair to the guy, but end of day, if you pin it on one play, there you have it.

What about the helmet to helmet hit on the play in question? I think it was also a hit on a defenseless receiver.

Brady throws nearly 50 passes against the team with the most sacks and hardly gets touched all night long. I don't understand why any team that plays the Pats doesn't load the box and jam the receivers instead of letting them run free. It's the same script week to week. Brady is throwing quick pass to wide open slot receivers. Pitch and catch. The defense eventually gets worn down and frustrated and it's game over. They are a real machine. The greatest team in NFL history.

To further this point, as Brady has gotten older, the Patriots have changed the way they run their offense. I think their offensive approach this season has changed how Brady handles pressure. Very few deep dropbacks, everything is out quick, and with the best running game since maybe 2004 helping open up the passing attack and making them more multi-dimensional, I think they are more prepared to handle pressure and mitigate a pass rush then they have been in a long-time. Also their receivers being healthy is a huge bonus; this isn't Brady's most talented arsenal but it may be his deepest. He has four guys he absolutely trusts on third downs (Edelman, Gronk, White and Hogan), Patterson is a fun tool and Dorsett can beat some defenses deep.

Bang, bang, bang, the ball is out lightning quick (listen to Joey Bosa's comments about Brady on YouTube at how quickly he gets the ball out) and Brady does not get touched.

Unless the Rams can figure out a way to dial up pressure on him, he'll just sit back there and shred them like he did vs the 12-4 Chargers and the 13-3 Chefs...…………………...

The most amazing thing in Brady's amazing career is how he never seems to get hurt. Almost every NFL QB that plays more than a handful of games seems to go down. The Pats system protects him from hits. He gets rid of the ball so quickly no D can touch him. I would make Brady beat me throwing downfield under pressure. That means jamming his slot receivers at the line. Maybe you get burned a few times on big plays, but sitting back and letting him play pitch and catch with wide open receivers underneath moving the chains and eating up the TOP is deadly. I don't think Brady has the arm to consistently throw long. And he doesn't have the type of big play receivers that are going to make huge plays. D coordinators seem to think they can get pressure rushing four and trying to cover but it doesn't work. They play it safe by keeping the receivers in front of them and giving up those 10-15 yd passes. Blitz him and make him beat you under pressure. The few times the Chiefs got anyone near Brady he was not accurate. If he can still take hits and beat you long, then you tip your hat to him. The Chargers have a good D and they got shredded. The Chiefs not so much. The Rams are not a blitzing D. I can't see any way they stop the Pats offense. Their only hope is that the run game shows up and Goff makes the plays when they are there. Keep Brady off the field and maybe outscore them like the Eagles did but their chances are not good.

I agree with this, basically, the Rams need to do what the Pats D did to the Chiefs in the first half, jam the receivers. That said, this SB is set up smooth as ice for the Pats, if they play like they have played their last 4 games, forget it. I will say one thing, if I am in the Rams secondary, go ahead and mug the NE receivers, b/c I can guarantee this officiating crew will call everything after the scrutiny from the last game!

Back to the D - I would suggest the Rams watch the Pats/Steeler game, it is about the only defense I watched all year that stuffed NE when it mattered (and it still gave up points)

I think this is the best NE Defense that they have ever had- no offense to Brusci or McGinnest. The O Line for NE was opening gaps I could have probably run through- back was getting 6-7 yards down field before first contact and then lowering their helmet to bang out another 2-3 yards. Having two backs that compliment themselves as much as those two do is a really good thing.

But to me the difference was obvious at the end of the game- Brady's jersey still milk white, Mahomes, not so much. The Chiefs need to learn they don't have to win every play- you have three sacks of Mahomes for 14,15 and 14 yards- that's twice the NFL Average. The one took them out of FG position in the 2nd quarter. Then the punt return where the kid in the third loses 15 yards. Those losses are monstrous. You cannot replace them. Your opponent is going to make plays. Take the loss and regroup- lose the 7 yards and reset. OC's have reasonable contingencies for 2nd and 12, 3rd and 9- when it gets to third and 18- that's a much steeper hill to climb.

For the life if me, even Romo saw it- why do you have a 5'10" DB trying to single cover Gronk going down the stretch at the end of the game??? The Chiefs defense was 31st in the league for a reason. You could see it on the D- Line at the goal line towards the end of the game- a lot of huffing and puffing and just not in shape.

I love the line matchups for this Super Bowl. It is going to be really interesting to watch. I agree with what COMBAT said and that the best way to beat Brady is to put him under pressure. But I think that is a taller task than it sounds. That line is solid.

I'm taking NE by 10. I think the Rams are the Chiefs 2.0. NE has the better defense and QB. The Rams have the better backfield. The Rams have the better D- Line but I think NE with the two back system they run keeps their guys fresh. Their line may bend but it wont break.

Hogan had probably one of the finest clutch performances I have ever seen.

The Chiefs defense was next to last in the regular season, whereas the Rams ranked 19th (NE was 21st) so I don't think the Pats will run roughshod over them like they did to the Chiefs; when the Pats won the coin flip, I knew the game was over.

The real question I'd like everyone's opinion on.......................Did Edelman touch that punt? :p:eek:

I don't believe he did- I'm sure this one will get discussed for the ages.

Yes, and except for that offsides penalty, the Chiefs win the game and Brady throws 3 INTs against one of the worst defenses in the league. Instead of talking about how invincible they are, everyone would be pondering whether that was the end. The Pats are a great team but not invincible. If the Rams can run the ball like they did against the Cowboys and their D continues to play decent, it will be a close game.

The game I saw the "Ints" were more of a tip drill exercise than bad judgement by Brady. I wouldn't expect to see three pics by the Rams this SB. Sacks- yes, three pics- nope.

I went to bed Sunday night feeling pretty confident when the teams walked off the field, the game was over and it was in fact, the end. Not sure I could say the same with the Gift wrapped SB invite the Rams got with the no calls.

Good points. I perceive that everyone is rushing to anoint the Patriots as the Champs but not so fast. I think it will be very close. Let’s not forget the Rams went into a difficult place to play and won. Yes, we can talk about the non call but the Saints had the chance to win the game but didn’t.

Brad,

Normally would not disagree, but based on what I have seen the past few weeks, I have the Patriots winning 38 - 27 and this is due to stronger second half by the Rams. The score may well indeed be closer than the game. Call it a gut feeling or years of watching or whatever, but I have the Patriots winning and I see them getting up 17 - 0 to start.
