Napoleonic Paintings You Would Like to Represent (1 Viewer)

I love that Clark and Stiles 1st Dragoon painting; but then I love the British Dragoons. I hope we see them from FL sooner than later, see this Matt.;):D:p:eek: Anyway, here's an even bigger version, about as large as I can go without converting to a paid photobucket account.

When First Legion do the Heavies please let it be the First Dragoons (Royals)or the Sixth Dragoons (Inniskillings) or Some Guards Cav.;) I prefer the Headgear to that of the Scotts Grays and to be honest and no disrespect to the Grays but I think they have had enough of the Limelight for the past 195 years lets see someone else for a change :) All the best Gebhard

I think you can rest easy on this. Somewhere on this forum a long time ago:D, Matt said I wouldn't be disappointed when I posted a 1st Dragoon helmet as the style of heavy unit helmet I would most like. Only the Dragoon Guards and Dragoons had that style with the flowing horse hair mane; the Life and Horse Guards had crests at that time. He has also said they would not do the Greys for a bit. We also know it will be a Waterloo unit which I think leaves the 1st Dragoon Guards, the 1st (Royals) Dragoons and the 6th (Inniskilling). Personally, I am rooting for the Royals since they were active in the Peninsula, as were the 3rd and 4th.:D I wouldn't be surprised if it is the Dragoon Guards though since they were quite active at Waterloo against the Cuirassiers.;) I can make that work too since the 3rd, 4th and 5th Dragoon Guards were all active in the Peninsula.:)

That sounds good to me , then we can both be happy :) and you can get double duty for your Peninsula display, either one on your suspicion list works for me :) The Greys must have hired the same public relations company as old nosey did as to hear most people talk those two single handedly won Waterloo  I did an old Airfix figure of a mounted Life Guard figure when I was a kid , I have always liked that uniform . I do hope they get around to them also one day .. All the best Gebhard

Yes that is a funny thing about the Greys; the participation of the rest of the Dragoon Units at Waterloo and, more specifically against D'Erlon's Corps, is virtually disregarded by comparison. Maybe they were right to pick those distinctive grey horses.

Some Life Guards and Horse Guards would be fine with me later as well since they both contributed some squadrons to the later Peninsula battles. The Horse Guards are notable of course for their contrasting blue coats but the Life Guards saw more action.

Actually, I think the Greys were not cast in such a positive light in the movie Waterloo (Rod Steiger as Napoleon). That scene when they got slaughtered by the Polish Lancers... their grey horses were quite distinctive indeed as the Polish lancers' steeds caught up with them with ease. Not to forget the fate of poor Ponsonby in that skirmish...

Yes well you have to remember that the movie Waterloo was hardly a success so the number of people who saw it are few, even by the standards of those interested in the battle. The Greys remain a major myth of the battle I think.

Indeed, it bombed at the box office. In the early 70s, it was one of the most expensive films ever made and could have been perhaps 3x more costly if filmed in the West. It was instead financed by Russians and actually utilised 16,000 men from the Soviet army. The flop subsequently discouraged Stanley Kubrick to abandon a possible film on Napoleon. Nevertheless, Naps aficionados should be able to appreciate the epic feel and the battle scenes were quite lavish. Prussian fans may be disapppointed because the arrival of Blucher was given very scant coverage.

Yes that is true , seeing this Movie for the first time in my youth was like seeing a dream come true :) all of the sudden all my hundreds of 1/72 scale Airfix figures had come to life and the Heros i had only read about were right in front of my eyes . I know its not perfect but it still remains one of my favorites just for it bringing Waterloo to life . The scene of the Prussians breaking out of the woods and hearing Bluecher say "raise the black flag" is pure Hollywood but worth the price of admission IMO of course ;) All the best Gebhard

Thats the point I was trying to make ;) The Royals , Inniskillings , the Blues , or the Kings ...just don't roll off the tongue like the Greys ..;) And are only know to people with more then a passing interest in the Napoleonic times . Where as everyone has at least heard the name of the Scots Grays ..Gebhard

Yeah... got to hand it to them for the effort. They moved mountains to bring it onto the big screen - i.e. the Russians literally bull-dozed 2 hills to recreate the battlefield authentically.

Wow... Airfix... their current plastic offerings are a pale shadow of their heyday in the 70s/80s. Naps are but a distant memory for them now. :(

Even if FL / NAP focuses on production Waterloo and Borodino battle ....
I have in my collection of beautiful Mameluke horsemen with their colorful uniforms! Please Matt ......:eek:

Another imagine; an artillery train. rather like this with a gun you could unlimber, for both the French and the British. We could even have some French lads lying down to fill the deep crevices.;) I know some of you would like it just the way it is.

Cost is great determiner of whether people would buy it in great numbers, but dreams are free.
I believe that there are people out there who would buy the set. I don't think that I would be one of them, (Short of winning the Lottery!) but I would love to see it done.
Perhaps a more cost effective release would be a French Ambulance and Separate wounded and tending figures. That might be doable and different?!

But don't we live only once ???

When I die, I'll ask to get burried with a picture of my wife and my daughter .... and all my toy soldiers :)))

Cheers,

Alex

Yeah... I'm not even buying in great numbers. I have to pick and choose singles of each pose - and each time tabulating how much I am chalking up. :(

It would be great if FL have a lower-priced range for the "Mounted Personality" subgroup like what Kolobob do for different level of paint quality. I would like to buy most of them but have to line up some sponsors to finance the purchase

Go easy on the arms race, guys...
