New Conte Zulus (1 Viewer)

That would be a great time for sure.Maybe I can persuade a vist .
Had to take down the zulu battle. Trying to make cabinets and I wanted the wargame table to work from. Not a finish carpenter it turns out!
After that I MIGHT take a crack at a new 5 x 16' table, But the old 6 x 12' might have to do for a while.

Fub it'd be one fine get together and Tim and I would be like a little kids in a candy store. Look forward to your next round of photos which I hope will show all of the work you've done......The Lt.

Lt., the paint jobs look fantastic, I think you have gotten them down to a science.:)

Thanks Lt. I have been wondering about the use of some colors in the headresses of the Zulus. Anything you can tell us about the colors we see in the toy figures out there? Any truth to it or just toy maker art?

From what I've seen done by the toy makers and the drawing from Angus McBride I'd say they're pretty much on target they may have been some liberties taken. Joachim may be able to shaed more light on the subject...The Lt.

If so do the colors have any significance?

From what i know, there are three basic styles of dress;
1) ceremonial dress/regalia - just as the color of the shield, there were very strict rules (color and arrangement of feathers, straps etc, material used. Not only in the headdress).
2) war dress (a easier to wear outfit in battle, but still uniform)
3) barely anything.
Like the Lt says, married men have the black headring, unmarried warriors have nothing or i.e. a leopard ring, but no black ring.

The no3 was the most common during the Anglo Zulu war, also has to do with lack of supplies just like the shield issue discussed earlier.

Too bad I can't tell you exactly what color/pattern shield goes with what dress. I haven't got a large overview. I would really like to have one.

As for now, the WB gloss and matte figures feature the uniform look and can be considered authentic and reliable reference. No expert on others but I do know Trophy sold their zulus as named regiments with distinctive shield patterns and uniforms and Imperial does so as well. I didn't check those on authenticity as I have none. Yet anyway.

Personally, I like to paint them with a little creative input but recently I've gotten more interested in uniforms. It sounds extremely interesting if you can match exotic regimental names to a bunch of feathers :)

Glad you weighed in Joachim. Yeah an overview would be great. Have a few of the Imperial sets and only a few H2H pieces when it comes to Trophy. I like the color that I see in the toy figures

Joachim and my Lord General the color of the shields had nothing to do with the dressing of the Zulu Warriors. The shields colors represented the various Zulu Regiments. A regiment would usually begin with black or predominantly black shields which were provided by the king made of hides of the royal herd. Osprey's Men at Arms Series 57 The Zulu War by Angus McBride provides the shield colors of the various regiments.......The Lt.

Ian Knight wrote this so it must be true ;) :

"The colour-coding of the big regimental war-shields was not the only component of an intricate uniform system which distinguished each ibutho.." ('the anatomy o/t zulu army')

He also states the differences were quite specific, for the military, but mostly ceremonial due to cost and impractibility (so they got a war-dress).
He then rambles on about the headdresses for four pages without going into a lot of useful detail for us painters

While awaiting Conte's "Horns of The Buffalo" I'm going back in time to the year 2000 feature 3 35mm photos that I had sent off to Joe Baker. The results are far different from the photos I sent but the figures and buildings are as photograph but the background and ground work was added by Joe with his magical touch........The Lt.

Ah, oldies. Great pics Lt. The first one gives a real 'zulu: the movie' feeling.

I wonder how long it will take Conte to show us some progress. We might be in for a long wait.

Could be a while, we're still waiting for the plastic Spartans.
Looking forward to the release of both series.
