NEW RELEASES FOR JANUARY 2019
THE SECOND WORLD WAR
AIRCRAFT CARRIERS

The Vought F4U Corsair is an American fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War 2 and the Korean War.
The Corsair was designed as a carrier based aircraft. Initially its difficulty in landing on carriers, rendered it unsuitable for Navy use until the Royal Navy overcame the landing issues.
After the carrier landing issues had been tackled, it quickly became the most capable carrier based fighter bomber of the Second World War.

USS Bunker Hill (CV/CVA/CVS-17, AVT-9) was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. The ship was named for the Battle of Bunker Hill in the American Revolutionary War. Commissioned in May 1943 and sent to the Pacific Theater of Operations, the ship participated in battles in the Southwest Pacific, Central Pacific and the drive toward Japan through Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and air raids on the Japanese homeland.
While covering the invasion of Okinawa, Bunker Hill was struck by two kamikazes in quick succession, setting the vessel on fire. Casualties exceeded 600, including 346 confirmed dead and an additional 43 missing, the second heaviest personnel losses suffered by any carrier to survive the war after Franklin. After the attack, Bunker Hill returned to the U.S. mainland and was still under repair when hostilities ended.
After the war, Bunker Hill was employed as a troop transport bringing American service members back from the Pacific, and decommissioned in 1947. While in reserve the vessel was reclassified as an attack carrier (CVA), then an antisubmarine carrier (CVS) and finally an Auxiliary Aircraft Landing Training Ship (AVT) but was never modernized and never saw active service again. Bunker Hill and Franklin were the only Essex-class ships never recommissioned after World War II

Fighter Squadron 84 or VF-84 was an aviation unit of the United States Navy. Originally established on 1 May 1944, it was disestablished on 8 October 1945. It was the first US Navy squadron to be designated as VF-84.

VF-84 flew F4U Corsairs and was formed around a nucleus of veterans of VF-17, the Jolly Rogers. The new squadron's commanding officer was Lt. Cdr. Roger R.Hedrick, former executive officer of VF-17.
VF-84 was assigned to the USS Bunker Hill. As part of Task Force 58, the carrier and Carrier Air Group 84 (CVG-84) participated in the final drive across the central Pacific. Roger Hedrick was promoted to head CVG-84 on the combat loss of the air group's commanding officer, and Lt. Cdr. Raymond "Ted" Hill took over the fighter squadron.
VF-84 took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima; raids on Tokyo and other targets in Japan; the discovery and sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato and support of the invasion of Okinawa, including combat air patrol over the invasion fleet to defend against Kamikaze attack, ground support, and combat air patrol over targets on Okinawa.
On 11 May 1945, while off Okinawa, two Japanese kamikazes struck the Bunker Hill in quick succession, with a bomb penetrating to the pilots' ready room, killing 22 members of VF-84. Both the Bunker Hill (then the TF-58 flagship) and CAG-84 were knocked out of the war. Although VF-84 was reformed in July 1945 as an F6F Hellcat squadron, the war ended while it was still in training. While in the Pacific, VF-84 was credited with 92 kills for a loss of 4 aircraft and nine of the squadron's pilots became aces.

DOOMED to poverty forever.

Just when I finally get my head out of the financial hole, John comes up with ANOTHER toy that simply MUST be had …. the BH-03 Corsair.
I am doomed, just doomed! {sm2}

AND THEN … those new Naval figures and deck equipment have been on my wish list for a long time …
2019 looks to be a GREAT year.

Doomed!

I really don't have room for #184 but still thinking about ordering it. The new figures to be released in the future have my interest and will certainly be collected. If I am not mistaken, I count approximately 16 new crew figures, plus the tractor, plus the rockets, plus the rocket carrier . . . . A lot to look forward to going into 2019 . . . .

:smile2: Mike

Great looking deck crew. Been waiting for figs at work to go with the "watchers" previously released. A busy carrier deck in the making although not so sure about manhandling an aircraft by the elevator. Was also hoping for the Sturmgeschutz, maybe next month. Chris

Chris, I wouldn't be surprised if those figures are intended to be used with more than one of Jenkins' plane models. You are, of course, correct about pushing a plane by a control-surface. The preferred method was to have plane handlers push from the front. The same was true of most of the trailing edge of the wing. I should also note that the trim-tabs, ailerons, flaps and elevator had "NO PUSH" stenciled on them. For our other readers, a video-guide to spotting planes on a carrier deck:

This morning I have been doing some preparation and rearranging of my USS Bunker Hill display in anticipation of BH-3 (184)'s arrival . . . yes, I have the new Corsair pre-ordered (TF gift certificates make great Christmas gifts . . . I had three to redeem which covered most of the expense of the new Corsair). My rearrangement considers the placement of the new crew figures that we have been given a sneak peek at. For example, BH-1 (167) will have the missiles being loaded onto its wings, and BH-2 (183) will be getting pushed into position. BH-3 (184) will be placed on the deck in the foreground with wings down, missiles gleaming, preparing to take off. The deck will be full of activity for sure. I am really looking forward to expanding this display going into 2019 . . . oh the possibilities . . . .

Mike .. I'M REALLY impressed with your collection, layout and space for your WWII Pacific carrier collection .... and a bit envious! :redface2:
I hope to get mine setup and running this winter. John has done a fantastic job with his WWII USN planes and crew series.
John's latest release of BH-03 and the impending crew goes to reinforce this statement.

I look forward to seeing what you create, given your talent and collection.

MOE ... Thank you for posting this video. I have watched it twice already, learning a lot from the audio and the action.
The sailor falling into the plane elevator was a touch of humor as it did look a bit staged ...{sm4}

I hope John sees this as there are a lot more figure poses that he can model for the future... {sm4}

Thank you very much LaRRy . . . John has done a fantastic job with his WWII USN range and has given us collectors a lot to look forward to going into 2019. Its really nice to see what's coming up in the future so that proper budgeting can be planned.

WOW.... very very nice setup Mike. I wish I have the budget and space for all these goodies from JJD

Mike, I see you've "cleared the decks" for action. Looking fwd to seeing those ordnance carts being wheeled into place. Very nice setup. Chris

Thanks Chris and Happy New Year. The decks might be cleared for now but soon the decks will be teeming with all sorts of action and support equipment. For me 2019 will be the year of the "BH" . . . .

Really great to see a Toy Soldier manufacturer acknowledge and correct a mistake. Too many choose to make excuses or blame the messenger when problems are identified! JJD sets a high standard for customer service IMO.

My first Corsair arrived today with a couple of crew figures and some decking. WOW. Seriously WOW
All I can say is all of the pictures on here do not do this plane justice. I am awaiting the restock from TF for the other and now looks like I'll have to have this one too. I DO NOT HAVE THE ROOM FOR THIS.{eek3}

I am the proud owner of the first two of John's Corsairs and eagerly looking forward to the third one.
They are truly works of Toy Soldier ART!
John has teased us with the prototypes of the new deck crew ... 2019 is looking like a banner year for us US NAVY collectors .... ^&grin

Congrats on collecting your first of many JJD Corsairs and deck crew. John's salute to WWII US Navy carrier operations is fantastic as you are now starting to realize. Absolutely my favorite JJD range to collect.
