New Releases for January 2019 - The Second World War (2 Viewers)

Thanks,
I knew this was going to be one of series that if I missed I would regret it. But I really don't have the room.
My wife offered one for christmas and the other popped up on here for under 200 last week. That's a sign.
I think you ignore the Gods will at your own peril so I followed the signs.

Looking forward to third plane and hopefully some hellcats.

Good news, I found a company that will make a 1/30 Bunker Hill carrier island. Bad news, it would be 58" long and cost $7,900. Let me know if you want me to put you in contact. :smile2: Chris

I'll take two :rolleyes2: . . . . Wow how neat would that be. My present carrier display table is 72" long so I do have the length required . . . . unfortunately my wallet and credit card don't have the required "length".

Hey Chris … If you can post the name of the company that would be great.
NOT that I could ever afford it, but maybe it might give me an idea on how to build one ...:rolleyes2:

... I am just wondering, if anyone has gotten any of the two re-releases.. I am just dying to get it started
But it has to be the pilot and plane first, then the flight deck, then the crew..

Chris, I would be interested in seeing a pic (or pic's) of the Bunker Hill Carrier Island from this company but like everyone else, I would never be able to afford buying one!

Larry mate, I reckon you better start getting your home extension underway before building one! ^&grin If you ever do undertake such a project then I would love to see it someday! {sm3}

There’s a guy from Spain (I believe) that makes carrier diorama bases in scales up to 1/32. They include catwalks and such, as specified. The only price that I can recall is $800 for a specific display. Bad news is that I don’t believe that I’ve got a link to his website. Will keep an eye for his blurbs on Facebook. I doubt that I’ll ever add an “island” from an American CV, but I would be game for a smaller section of one as a facade, perhaps a gun-turret, or two, as well.

Perhaps a solution to the size of the island on carriers can be found with the escort carriers. Their islands were much smaller and might prove easier, cheaper, and more space efficient for a carrier dio. -- Al

Figarti displayed a model of the island and deck of the Hornet with several B-25 Mitchells in their Dolittle Raid exhibit at the 2013 Chicago show. Photos are posted on the Figarti thread for the Chicago show. A nice example for how a Carrier island can be constructed.

Good call Katana, I remember that one. Someone also built one at the show this year 2018. It was pictured in the show report thread.

For those interested, here's the link to SD Model Maker carrier island. https://sdmodelmakers.com/product/carrier-island-model. Pictured is a 1/350 scale island of the CVN USS Gerald R Ford. But they will make any carrier. I have three models from them shown in my collections thread and all are museum quality. I contacted the owner and he gave me the dimensions and price of the 1/30 scale USS Bunker Hill, 58", $7,900.

Thinking of doing a 1/72 version. THere are many diecast models available in that scale and all better detailed than their polystone/resin counter parts IMO. The challenge will be to get suitable flight deck air crew, deck hands, ship's complement, tug, etc to make a believable scene. Those are scarce in 1/72 for some reason. Chris

Chris, this might work for some turrets that I'd like, the 8-inch versions on the Saratoga, so thanks!

I found the maker of the carrier deck sections that I mentioned earlier. The gentleman's FB page is called "3D BASES by Mario Catania." I'd put a link in here, but you'd have to have FB access to get there, one way or the other.

Scrounged around the FB page and brought back a couple of pics of Catania's work:

!/48 scale may be a better choice than 1/72. The aircraft are just as well detailed and more figures and vehicles are available. Hobby Master has excellent models of the F4u, F4F, F6F and A6M. Armor has very good models of the SBD, F4U, and F6F. Armor models can still be found on Ebay. 1/48 B-25 Mitchels from Armor would make a great Doolittle Raid diorama.

True, but I'm looking at space constraints

A basic carrier $600, doubles as a Japanese and sometimes an American carrier. Will be getting John's tug. Have his US sailors which look good around the Corsair (not shown, these are older photos). Ok not terrific, but at least it does the job for me, cannot afford thousands. Robin.
