New Winter Tiger (3 Viewers)

Is it shortly yet? I thing I noticed is that the concrete paste stuff looks overly textured. I saw one in a movie lately and it did not look so deeply grained.

True enough the Zimmerit is quite pronounced. However when reducing scale, all the way down to 1/30th in this case, I find it desirable to grow definition in some areas as opposed to others.

This philosophy aides in tickling the eye of the viewer and creates a far more activated surface on the whole.

An excellent observation though. Thanks for your interest and I appreciate the note:)

I wasn't going to bring up the zimmerit but I will bring up that the tank is missing a wheel. I'm sure this tank is just a prototype. :)

I've just looked at my 1/16 Fov Tiger & your right it does look deeply grained .
The tank looks to white & clean for me to , reminds me of a Christmas cake

Ahh Im so glad the roadwheels were brought up:

The early front wheels were commonly removed by the crews as they tended to clog up so badly with mud and debris and wear down at the rubber so quickly that tracks would be thrown. In fact German designers found that the tank was so very front heavy, due to the 88mm gun, armor and transmission, that the rubber would virtually dissapear from the front roadwheels soon after leaving the factory.

We allow the customer to choose: we actually will have a spare for the customers to take on and off as you prefer. The later pressed steel roadwheels ( present on our 506th version offered at the same time ) were engineered by the Germans omitting that particular roadwheel altogethor as reports from the field witnessed so many crews pulling them off.

I've also attached more images so if you move to the front of the thread again you can enjoy a few more views.

Hi Brain I'm sorry to say that 501st Heavy Tank battalion was on the Eastern Front when the Battle of the Bugle was going on

Firstly I want to thank UK Subs for possibly preventing a real problem with decaling. There seems to be some real confusion between SS Panzer Abteiling 501st that was absolutely in the Ardennes and the Heer Panzer Abteilung 501st on the Eastern front. Those are two seperate heavy tank battalions that existed.

I reach out to you froggers for the answer: whoever can identify the correct division that belongs to the 501st SS Heavy Tank battalion in the Ardenne, hence describing the correct decaling necessary, will be shipped a FREE SET of Collectors Showcase figures.

Please post on this thread, however does this first is the winner!

Thank you to everyone: including and especially our number one fan UK Subs!;)

very best regards,

Brian

There seems to be some confusion between s.H.Pz.Abt.501 (Army 501st Heavy Tank Battalion) and s.SS.Pz.Abt.501 (Waffen SS 501st Heavy Tank Battalion). As noted earlier the Army unit wasn't in the Ardennes. The SS unit was attached to 1.SS.Pz.Div "LSSAH" and Kampfgruppe "Peiper"

The Crouching Tiger unit emblem belongs to the Army unit but this tank appears to have Waffen SS crew

I also question whether either of the 501 units still had any Tiger I's at this point in the war. To the best of my knowledge they were fully transitioned to the Tiger II. The only Tiger I's that I know about in the Ardennes offensive were those of s.H.Pz.Kp. Hummel (Heavy Panzer Company "Hummel") which was attached to the s.H.Pz.Abt.506 (Army 506th Heavy Tank Battalion)

Lastly there is the whitewash. I continue to seek photographic evidence of German tanks with it applied from the Battle of the Bulge but to date I haven't seen anything conclusive.

Outstanding, yes we have found either LAH relevant or 506th paderborn. However we were hoping for a nice colorful decaled unit to use with this model. So if you or any other astute froggers, have any other suggestions beyond the two that seem immediately relevant ( LAH and 506th ) we would love to hear from you again, thanks much for the interest and the feedback.

best regards,

Brian

Hi Frank
Your spot on 501 units in the Ardennes did not have Tiger 1 but King Tigers ;)

This has been a thoroughly educational discussion. This along with previous posts from Frank has help me greatly on the whole Tiger I issue and the "Battle of the Bulge".

Can't I just love the look of something, without every little thing about it being wrong? :rolleyes:Michael

The 506th did have a unit symbol applied to their Tiger 1's but not their Tiger 2's.

This Symbol consisted of a stylized letter ( W ) in Black outline, with a Black and Yellow tiger with a Red mouth, and a Red shield with a White cross on it. ;)

Paul

Hi Brian,

This is the only decal that could be used for your Tiger 1 at the Bulge.

Did I win?

Regards,
Paul
