New Winter Tiger (2 Viewers)

Re: AND THE WINNERS ARE!

Before I announce our TWO winners I wish to say that this discussion has been one of the most positive and informative ever. Rather than just simple gripes ( although some folks couldn't help it: I understand;) ), there were a few that rose above the din and began to think as a group. Solving problems and coming togethor to push the hobby forward, however little it may seem.

" One small step forward, one leap for the hobby " or something like that. So to the honors ( drum roll please ):

1. fmethorst wins first place for his dedication to the thread and his very concise and immediate answers to some of the basic questions involving the 501st and 506th. Please choose ANY figure set on our site and send us an e-mail with your address so we can ship one off ( support@thecollectorsshowcase.com )

2. IXEC wins second place for his covering fire and support of fmethorst. Please choose ANY figure set on our site and send us an e-mail with your address so we can ship one off ( support@thecollectorsshowcase.com )

A special runners up mention goes out to nasirkasmani for first broaching the decal issue and generally being a great sport and very informative as well.

Thanks for all contributions they will be noted in your stasi personnel files for later reference if and when required.

warm regards,

Brian

Oh boy I WON

Thank You very much Brian :D

I'm so new to this hobby, I started out this past Jan with Britains and started collection these makers as well.

Got Conte in Feb.

K & C in Mar.

Figarti in Apr.

HB in May.

And now this will be my first CS, and not my last I'll say now.

I'll be going for other makers as well.

I have met many great people here, and I have spoken to dealers personally and find this a rewarding new hobby.

I look foward to more great Shop Talk with all, thanks. :)

Well actually the question was:

"I reach out to you froggers for the answer: whoever can identify the correct division that belongs to the 501st SS Heavy Tank battalion in the Ardenne, hence describing the correct decaling necessary, will be shipped a FREE SET of Collectors Showcase figures."

Answer 1.SS.Pz.Div "LSSAH"

That makes me the winner :p

A High Five to ya Frank, we both Won :D

Paul

Thanks Mr.Vamp,

BUT THIS THREAD IS NOT DEAD, YET.

This is for you Brian,

I have found a picture of the elusive Ardennes WHITE TIGER 1.

There was another Tiger I unit in the Battle of the Buldge.

The Panzer-Abteilung (Fkl) 301

They had 31 Tiger 1's

27 were left by the beginning of the Ardennes Campaign.

Some of these Tiger 1's were paint in snow camouflage rarely seen on the Western Front.

I have a picture of one of this units Tiger 1 painted in overall White Wash, in the Ardennes Campaign.

Were he are, Never Say Never, again.

So Brian, your new Tiger I CAN have the White Wash scheme for the Ardennes

PAUL

Great detective work Paul!

Is the picture good enough to get unit markings?

Thank you Simon.

No, it appears the White Wash is applied over the unit numbers, thus concealing any markings. :(

PAUL

My Ardennes WHITE TIGER 1's picture is of a knocked out pair of Tiger 1's taken during Operation BLACKCOCK.

The two Tiger 1's were KO'ed by crews of six-pounders in the " Heinsberger Triangle " on Jan.21th, ( the British sector ) by the 5th KOSB ( The King's Own Scottish Borberers ).

These Tiger's are cool, they have welded cages on the Stowage Bins to accommidate Jerry Cans of Petrol.

The Petrol Cans were stowed this way for this units Remote Control, Borgward BIV Ausfuhrung's ( demolitions carrier's ).

Paul

Another thing about my White Tiger's picture.

They don't have Zimmerit.

Paul,

Can you kindly scan the pics and post them.

I'm very curious about the Winter pics.

Not that i doubt you of course, but some (especially earlier) reference books have been known to misquote their sources.

thank you in advance.

sincerely,

nasir kasmani.

No problem NK, I'm glad you asked.

I can only tell you from what book I got the picture from., my scanner is down. :(

But first let me tell you how I stumbled apon the information, if I can. ;)

I collect Corgi diecast military everything. In my collection I have some 1:50 scale Tiger I's, that I never opened. I just got some Corgi 1:50 metal soldiers from a store called Tuesday Morning. They were dumping this stuff for unbelieveably low prices, so I got some.

I was going to set up a winter dio with the Tiger I with the new troops.

Every Corgi comes with a short history of it's subject matter.

The Corgi, Tiger 1, I have, turns out to be from the 301st Heavy Tank ( Remote Control ) Battalion. So I read the brief history on the box it came in, and I say, I have a book on this subject, that I never even looked at ( still in shrink wrap ).

I open the book, and yes there's a chapter about the 301st. And there I found the photo.

The book is a J.J.Fedorowicz Publication. called Funklenkpanzer, by Marcus Jaugitz.

And I can say, as someone that has a lot of J.J./F books, that this has to be the best book I've seen from them. There's every kind of photo on Armor subjects in this one book that I have ever seen in any of their other books, it's packed.

The picture is on page 493.

I know, to much information

Paul

Just a foot note, NK.

J.J.Fedorowicz books are the best in the business. The authors of their book get their photos and text from the very soldier survivor's, personal collections. They interview them on tape and have access to their personal photo collections. :)

These Author relationships take many year of trust from the people subjects. ;)

Trust me to say, their photos are.... PROOF. :)

Great work Paul ;)

I've just check up the unit history in my book Tiger on the western front by Jean Restayn & it show the pic of the two destroyed tigers + a colour profile of the Tiger in white
Only down side is next to the picture there a side note saying that expert Marcus Jaugitz talked to former members of 301 & they said no Tigers from there unit were painted white :(

Hi Brian,

Thanks a lot. That's great news. :D

I was hesitant to comment initially because some forum members can become upset at what they perceive to be an attack on a product they like. I have to say you been a great sport and this discussion has been very enjoyable. I think one of the truly great things about a forum like this one is the ability to harness the collective knowledge of so many avid collectors.

PAUL

Hi Paul,

Congrats on your win. :)

Awesome find on the additional Tiger 1s in the Ardennes. I went through the German OOB (Order of Battle) for "Wacht am Rhein" a while ago and I missed it because my reference has this unit subordinate to the 9th Panzer Division. After reading your post I quickly found it.

Now, as for whitewash, the problem I have is that there wasn't snow on the ground when the offensive kicked off Dec. 16. It doesn't make sense for whitewash to be applied without snow. This means it would have had to been applied part way into the offensive after it snowed. Do crews carry this type of supply? Is this a maintenance unit task? Certainly all the pictures I have of Tiger IIs and Panthers show late war factory paint schemes. I would love to examine these whitewashed Tiger I pictures if anyone could post them.

Thanks for your persistance.
