JJDESIGNS NEWS UPDATE 4th NOVEMBER 2024
THE GOLD RUSH

A gold rush or gold fever is a discovery of gold that brings an onrush of miners seeking their fortune.
Major gold rushes took place in the 19th century in the United States, Canada, Australia, Greece, New Zealand, Brazil , Chile, and South Africa.

Gold rushes were typically marked by a general buoyant feeling of a “free for all”, in which any single individual might become abundantly wealthy almost instantly, as expressed in the California Dream!
Gold rushes helped spur waves of immigration that often led to the permanent settlement of new regions. Activities propelled by gold rushes define significant aspects of the culture of the Australian and North American frontiers.
At a time when the world’s money supply was based on gold, the newly mined gold provided economic stimulus far beyond the goldfields, feeding into local and wider economic booms.

The California Gold Rush of 1848-1855 in the Sierra Nevada captured the popular imagination, and led to an influx of gold miners, which led to California’s rapid industrialization, as businesses sprung up to serve the increased population and financial institutions to handle the increased wealth.
One of these political institutions was statehood; the need for new laws in a sparsely governed land led to the state’s rapid entry into the Union in 1850.

Various gold rushes occurred in Australia over the second half of the 19th Century. The most significant of these although not the only ones, were the New South Wales gold rush and Victorian gold rush in 1851, and the Western Australia gold rushes of the 1890’s.

These were highly significant to their respective colonies political and economic development as they brought many immigrants, and promoted massive government spending on infrastructure to support the new arrivals who came looking for gold.
While some found their fortune, those who did not often remained in the colonies and took advantage of extremely liberal land laws to take up farming.

One of the last “great gold rushes” was the Klondike gold rush in the Yukon Territory in 1896 – 1899. This gold rush is featured in the novels of Jack London, and in Charlie Chaplin’s film “The Gold Rush”.
The main goldfield was along the south flank of the Klondike River near its confluence with the Yukon River, close to what was to become Dawson city in the Yukon Territory. It also helped to open up the relatively new US possession of Alaska to exploration and settlement, and promoted the discovery of other gold finds.

The first of the Gold Rush sets will be available in December.

It was with great shock and sadness to hear about the passing of Brett Williams from the Military Workshop in Brisbane. Our heartfelt condolences are with his wife Gerelou and his family.
He would have loved this range!

Best wishes,

A tempting range to get into and bound to appeal especially to US, Canadian and Oz collectors.

Only problem is you need a river Steve
I'm sure many will say pour your own resin into a handmade diorama, but for many, they won't be wanting to be experimenting or messing about with that, but want something simple they can take out of the packet, lay on a shelf or whatever, so there are options of something suitable from model railway accessories, whether that be just a plastic strip with ripple effects or a ready made diorama section, JG miniatures mats, or 3D print terrain and river section, or of course with a larger budget, something like a commission with TM Terrain or Pat Gallagher.

The prospector with pack mule is an outstanding/iconic looking figure. I will certainly be adding this set to my want list.

Mike

I wasn't going for the Fur Trade range but after I left the early releases alone I ended up with many figures, a boat, trading post and other sets.

Now IF I can collect a small diorama and hold off getting loads of sets then this range might be something I dabble in but unlike John's ancients I am not blown away.

Will sell well I suspect but maybe less so from us Brits

I agree with Mike...the prospector and his mule are exceptional!
in addition, it will mix very well with trappers.
essential for me.

We always liked Wm Hocker's & Sarum Soldiers' versions of western themes like this.
This one looks to be the best of 'em all. Great depiction - JJD didn't stint on anything...
Except maybe a river. But those are available as pointed out above.
We agree with every comment so far.

Because when you or at least I do, if you should think of the 49ers at all, you (me) tend to think of a more arid landscape than that which is available in ready made form in Terrain Mats, at as offered by, e.g. JG Miniatures, perhaps someone interested in this range and I'm sure it would fit other ones, could suggest and hopefully persuade JG to do a more arid mat with a Stream / River , perhaps even a dry River / Wadi, bed to expand on !
Just an idea, since I have nothing in this.

It's refreshing to see a Civilian Range that can represent a common history in numerous countries, and considering this new range would complement existing 'Western' ranges, I think JJD is on a winner here.

I hope to see some Wagons and Stage Coaches (Wells Fargo, Cobb & Co etc) to transport the Miners, Merchants and the Gold.

And of course we need some Outlaws/Bush Rangers to steal all that Money and Gold.

I'm excited!

Early days, but on reflection I think John may have struck ‘gold’ with this new series. It will appeal to many countries because they have experienced this phenomenon first hand in their history and also it has ‘legs’. I am sure collectors can envisage lots more add on’s, like bush rangers, troopers, wagons and women folk etc. John has a talent of finding niche markets and following through with lots of intriguing ideas. Here’s hoping it ‘pans’ out to be a success like the Fur Trade.⛏️⛏️⛏️⛏️⛏️⛏️⛏️ Robin.

Hi, Lee of Sheffield Miniatures here, Julie let me know about a possible base for the new Gold Rush figures, so i have put in some time and come up with the following which i will be releasing shortly. Let me know if that would suit the range ? This is 2 bases joined together to make a base, just under 2 feet long and 1 foot wide. Thanks. Lee.
