You've obviously never had sight of a Ladies Tea Morning. It can get **** ugly if the right blend isn't served up, or the crusts aren't cut off the cucumber sandwiches.

Yeah and the casualty depts of Englands country hospitals are filled with people suffering from terrible wounds from flying Scones.Scone rage, the crime that daren't speak its name.

I really need to get out more.I come here to discuss the possibility of an AK88and end up talking about Scones.Thats the joy of this forum.I think i'd better do some housework now.

Rob

Or some home baking?

Remember to sour the milk first for the definitive English scone. :D

I have heard getting poked in the eye with a flying kipper can be quite nasty.:)

And it works both ways!.Perhaps that why the relationship is 'special'.And it was brought home to me just last night. My darling wife took me along to Londons west end to see 'The sound of music' at the London palladium.(very good it was too)The last scene(as those of you who've seen the film will know) is a singing contest in front of the Nazis. And for that scene the theatre was covered in Nazi flags .And i've got to say it was creepy. We both thought what if?.I will be eternally grateful that our two nations(and many others)came together to rid the world of the Nazis and their doctrine.

Even if you don't understand Cricket and we don't understand American football!(although after the thrashing we had in Australia looks like we don't understand Cricket either!)

What about the Russians in WWII comrade, I think they helped a bit :)

Yes they did, they drove the trucks and jeeps we sent them, and flew the

planes we sent them, and fired the weapons we sent them. They did move

the troops poised against the Japanese to fight the Germans when we

attacked the Japanese held islands......oh yeah then they enslaved most

of Europe for the next 50 years. Your point would be?

Njja:confused:

LOL - my point would be that it's time you got out of the rain and saw some sunshine njja, and some realism :)

Surely the Russian army/peoples sacrafice was huge and theres no doubt the war in Europe would have gone on for a long time without them.

Rob

You are correct, they suffered greatly under Stalin before, during and after

the war. My point was the Allies provided much needed equiptment and

supplies which allowed them to continue the fight during their darkest hours.

A united front, and determination from all the allies turned the tide in WWII.

Njja

The fact is that the Russians provided most of their own materiel.

Btw, the UK weren't able to repay their WWII debt to the US until last year.

No i meant they suffered terribly against the Germans, with huge losses of soldiers and civilians in battle and through atrocities.I certainly agree with you that final victory was gained through a huge joint effort of many nations-whatever their other faults.

Rob.

I also voted for an 88 [afrika korps], I have just bought the
last one issued so i,m looking forward to adding it too the
collection when it arrives. Now to track down a demag [the last piece I need to complete my Ak collection] ! The search continues ;) .

Oz:

What is it with you guys in the land down under? Always look at things upside down aren't you.

1) US did provide alot and I mean alot of War Supplies and finished war products to Russia in the early period of the War - when he joined the allies.

Which brings us to point #2

2) Stalin sided with Hitler first - invaded Poland and killed many inocent folks before Russia was invaded by Germany. No clean hands on the old hammer and sicile.

Yes - after they were attacked by Germany they did lose many people.

But, they also had a treaty with Japan and stay out of the Pacific side of WW II until it was clear the Allies would win and then jumped in at the last moment for the land grab.

Sorry Oz - your commie buddies were not our friends.

Proud to be an American & a part of the Allies,

Ron :D

I'm late to this party but without the Russians, the West is not winning this war. They did the heavy lifting in crushing Hitler and paid a very heavy price.
Stalin was just as bad as Hitler but the Allies needed him.

I'm in agreement with Oz on these points.

All this cold war talk reminds me that I haven't seen Dr. Strangelove in a while. Interesting how much fear mongoring there is in history for political gain and profit. I will be curious to see if historians conclude there was ever a real threat to the US from the USSR. I don't really know the answer, but its interesting that nobody much cares what the russians do these days.

All is fair in love, war and politics. Remember it was FDR who would not listen to Churchill when he was warned about Stalins intentions during many of their meetings. FDR was willing to do anything to keep Russia in the war in Europe, because Japan was next. FDR and then Truman wanted the Russians in during the Pacific war. The problem was that Stalin saw the cost of such a conflict and stayed by his nonagression treaty with Japan as long as he did. They (FDR and Truman) planned for a chance that the Japanese may not surrender when the bomb was used and that it was better to have some Soviet deaths take the place of US deaths if we had to invade the Home Islands. The real fear was a divided Japan after the war, but with 1,000,000 casualties predicted, Russian assistance would help American families share the burden of death and sacrifice.

It is also good to remember that the UK (after WWI) believed that the next major war would be with the US. Hence all the diplomatic moves that resulted in the Treaty of Washington. That and a fear of Japan's navy. The UK was deathly afraid of the US battleship building program that was dramatically changed as a result of the treaty. They could not afford to replace their aging fleet and the US was on a major building campaign that would result in twice as many capital ships in the US as in Britain. To threaten the Royal Navy is to threaten the UK.
