NFL 2015 Season (2 Viewers)

As the story indicates, they're still free to use the name. They just will not be entitled to the protections that come with an actual registration. You still have Common Law protections.

They need to find some Norwegians to claim that the Viking mascot stereotypes blond haired Scandinavians as prone to violence. I disagree with this decision. It may very well be offensive but it is not up to the government to make that determination. This is different from the flag issue in that it relates to decisions made by private businesses to display or use an offensive name and not the state. An offensive symbol should not be used by the state itself but private individuals should be allowed to make that decision for themselves. If Synder paid for the team, he should be able to name it anything he wants and be entitled to legal protections. If people don't like it they can stop going to the games or buying team brands - something many Redskins fans have already done because they stink.

Another banner day for the USofPC. So we ban the Confederate flag because some think it represents racism and violence, and we now have stripped the Washington Redskins of the legal copyright protection because some think the name racist. When do we go after Rap music because of it's racist and violent lyrics? Plus, rap music is a true offense to the ears. I can't stand it anymore.{sm2} -- Al

I don't really understand what the implications of the cancellation of the Redskin's trademark registration means...

did they lose the trademark to their logo?

can others now start producing "non NFL-authentic" Redskin t-shirts...hats...cups?

does this have anything to do with their merchandise?

which is a HUGE moneymaker...

what does this really mean...

can anyone explain this to me?

I'm not a trademark lawyer and so knowledge is limited. They can still use their name on merchandise but if someone goes ahead and uses the word "Redskins" it will be much harder, but apparently not impossible, to stop them from using it.

Just because you don't have a trademark registration issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office doesn't mean you can't use a particular name. It just afford you less protection.

NFL merchandise is a big money maker for these teams...
this is gonna hit the owners in the pocketbook large...

You bet it is. And Danny "Scrooge" Synder will have his lawyers are over this. This is the guy who forces people to park in his lot and tells the police to ticket anyone who does not. He's got a good First Amendment case to get this overturned. The government simply can't be in the business of determining what names are acceptable. There would no end to it.

Good God do they ever, they are awful; in the past 23 years, they've won a grand total of three playoff games.

The Patriots just won three this past season.

They stink on ice, which is a shame as in the early 80's to early 90's, they were a powerhouse franchise, ranked up there with the 49er's as the team of the decade.

Right now, they are terrible...................

Did it start to go downhill when Joe Gibbs left?

Jean Pierre Paul: moron!

He's on the verge of signing a multi year contract and he suffers a serious accident using to his hands on July 4 using fireworks. Basically doesn't tell the Giants anything. The Giants then find out through ESPN that he's had his right index finger amputated and when the Giants medical staff attempt to see him, they are rebuffed.

He's also in trouble with Florida authorities for violating the fireworks law.

Goodbye contract and maybe career. No, you can't make this stuff up.

Hi Jason. Gibbs kind of left with the Redskins tank empty after 1992. Since Gibbs left in '92 (his first stint as coach) the Redskins have not won more than 10 games (3 times in 23 years). The Redskins changed ownership after Cooke's death in '99 but that really made no difference other than perception. As you asked, once Gibbs left in '92, it all went south and hasn't really recovered, regardless of Cooke or Snyder. -- Al

They were actually removing seats from (insert sponsor's name) stadium because they can't sell tickets. Hard to believe in the NFL. Of course they might consider lowering ticket prices, but Dandy Dan would probably stroke out. He's the worst owner in all of sports, but can provide encouragement to others in that his success proves you don't have to be bright to make money.

this is unbelievable...
absolutely crazy...

on top of that...
Pierre-Paul isn't the only NFL player to suffer a fireworks-related injury this Fourth of July...
Bucs cornerback C.J. Wilson reportedly lost two fingers in an accident...

I don't know what kind of fireworks they are working with...
or if they hold them in their hands while they explode...
you assume these are intelligent people...
how does this happen?

didn't anybody teach them to run after they light the fuse?

There seems to be a "Intelligence" misfire when it comes to fireworks, for a lot of folks. Here in Calais, Maine some 22 year old though it would be funny to launch a mortar tube rocket of the top of his head .... YES ... off the top of his head .... with NO helmet or anything. As you probably suspect, his family didn't call the ambulance since there was not a lot left of him to take to the hospital. Another Darwin potential thought it would be funny to stick one up his nose. THE RESULT sever facial burns and lung damage. But these brainless kids didn't have millions of dollars at stake as these two NFL'ers did ..????

Makes no sense BUT these ARE football players so maybe that is the reason ...?

Larry...

these "dangerous activities" that these high priced athletes participate in...
came up a while back on this thread...

I know there must be clauses in their contracts...
that null and void the teams liability when they injure themselves...

aren't there?

Saw the story of the kid and the mortar tube rocket. Now I know where the phrase 'Too stupid to live' originated. What a tragedy, and in front of his family. Wasn't there someone in the group who could point out that maybe it wasn't such a good idea? Boy, is youth ever wasted on the young. -- Al

Hey Al ... the SECOND tragic story in this event is that the family "also" thought it was funny and no one tried to stop him. After the disaster, they interviewed the family and got wildly conflicting stories.

The brother tried to safe a little face for the family and said .."It was an accident as he didn't believe that the lighter would work and actually light the fuse .....:confused: ^&confuse {sm2}

HUH???

.... AND there was a 12 second fuse delay (according to the manufacturer) so that should be enough time to get the darn thing off your head if it was a mistake.

As one might suspect there was alcohol involved in the nights festivities so there you go .... beer and explosives ... what a combination. You gotta' feel for the family as this was soooooooo preventable. :(

Stay SAFE and SMART people.

Larry, this story just staggers me. I worked in the fire department for 21 years and saw a LOT of stupid things that everyday normal people did. But, as you point out, alcohol changes it all. Tragedy after tragedy, all under the auspices of having fun, relaxing, unwinding, whatever. Add alcohol and someone always seems to end up hurt or dead. It's all so tragic and preventable. In the public safety realm it is known as job security. -- Al

As I mentioned on another forum, myself and Miss Tiffany attend a large July 4th party every year hosted by my best friend, he lives at the end of a cul de sac and about 50 to 60 people show up.

There is a fireworks display at night that has grown larger and more involved each year; he's the president of the Taunton Pop Warner and Little League, so all the police in town know him, they don't bother us during the fireworks, plus it's pretty comical as random people come down the street and watch the fireworks.

That said, it gets more dangerous each year as well; there are four guys from the party who light them off; they take two pallets and drop a sheet of plywood over them and drill the plywood in place with screws. Then they line up those tubes, secure them down with screws so they don't fall over and have **** tons of other fireworks stacked nearby and place them one by one on the plywood and light them off. The tubes are tricky as the charge you drop in is clearly marked TOP, so you drop it in TOP up naturally, light the fuse and walk away.

The guy who got killed dropped the charge in upside down and once it went off, instead of blowing up into the air and then going off, it blew up inside the tube and blew his head off; unreal.

The issue is they are lighting off so many, if there is ever a misfire, they won't know it, so then they drop the next one in and it goes BOOM, it could be deadly as the tubes are made of metal and shrapnel would fly everywhere.

I stay clear of it, want nothing to do with it and sad to say I am convinced at some point, there is going to be an accident as they light them off at around 9:00pm and considering that the adult beverages have been flowing since around 4:00pm, as others have said, alcohol and fireworks do not mix.

With all the reports of injuries, at some point sales in the US should be banned, period; they are illegal in MA, but they are sold over the boarder in RI and NH, so off they go each year to buy them in MA.

Hi George, glad you and Miss T had a good time.

Fireworks are also legal here in Maine but not in Waldoboro where city/town law takes precedence (I guess). There are 3 or 4 stores that "JUST" sell fireworks all year with in a few minutes from my house. Must be big business.

The minimum age is 21 in ME, but TV news reports kids as young as 15 - 16 are getting ahold of them. Male invincibility at 15, 16, 17 is just taken for granted by these doe-doe's so there is never any ... "Gee ... lets me think ...:rolleyes2: ... will this kill me? Nah!"

Another side story to this fireworks question is the money. I understand that to put on a "decent" display a person can spend $1500, $2000 or MORE. {eek3}

Many of these people are on food stamps, collect welfare or are just minimum wage earners. SO where do they come up with the $$$$$ to spend on something so fleeting of enjoyment as fireworks.

I have no desire to purchase any fireworks, but even if I did, I am so in debt to you for Toy Soldiers I can't even afford a sparkler ... {sm5}!!
So, I guess in reality you are jut keeping me safe!!
