And who can blame them; as much as Louis rails against the Giants ownership and management, they've won two Super Bowls in the past eight years, four overall.
I happen to be very appreciative of the Giants ownership and their management practices. In this case, however, one of their better attributes, their patience with coaches and GM's, is actually hurting them, as they have kept Jerry Reese, given him chance after chance, and he has consistently done an awful job with the draft. When you look the Giants his first round picks since Reese took over in 2007, the majority are either not on the roster (Aaron Ross, Kenny Phillips, Prince Amakamura, David Wilson), or have under performed (Ereck Flowers, Eli Apple). In fact, the Giants have the lowest percentage of draft picks on their active roster of any team in the league.
Last season, they got rid of Coughlin and gave Reese another chance. Everyone in football knew the Giants desperately needed offensive line talent, but Reese passed on Offensive Tackle Laremy Tunsill, who most experts indicated was the best overall player in the draft, let two teams trade up and pass the Giants to get the other offensive tackle and defensive lineman the Giants intended to draft, and inexplicably drafted Eli Apple, a corner back most experts had as a mid-second round pick, with the 10th pick in the draft. Apple has been burned so badly that the Giants have twice benched him this season. Flowers, the 9th pick in last years draft has been another "left tackle of the future" (like Justin Pugh, another of Reese's first round picks) who has been badly over matched at tackle. I expect that like Pugh, Jerry Reese will move him from Tackle to Guard to save face, and the Giants have to draft another left tackle next year.
The Giants are now 3-4 against quality teams, and, frankly, the offense did not even show up in Pittsburgh (I know there were bad calls and no calls by the officials, there always are, that is not an excuse for playing as poorly as the Giants did on offense). Their first year head coach, Ben McAdoo, chosen by Jerry Reese, has been overwhelmed by being both head coach and calling plays, and the offense has suffered accordingly. If the Giants miss the playoffs, they will almost assuredly finally fire Jerry Reese, but this will create another problem: the new GM will not have chosen the head coach, whom the Giants will not fire for at least another 2-3 seasons. The Giants have not made the playoffs in 4 years (since they won their second super bowl with players for the most part drafted by Ernie Accorsi, their former GM), and, despite an 8-3 start, I don't expect them to win another game his season. I am hopeful that this will finally come home to roost with Jerry Reese, the worst GM in franchise history.
