Seeing how no one seems to be into converting plastics, is any one into painting plastics? If so This thread is for sharing your photos of your painted plastics or painting tips. Shannon wanted to see some new posts in plastics so heres your chance. I,ll start us off with some dragoons.

Very nice Alex. I bought the prepainted version from Dragon and added a Sherman and a Jeep to the beach for some extra interest.

Thanks Oz. Here are some airfix I painted a while back.

Alex:

Which LCVP or LCM model is featured with your painted soldiers?

Thanks

Hey Alex, stand those airfix Afrika Corps you painted next to WS01 and WS02 or AK01 and AK02 and tell me what you think. Andy admitted that he used those figures to make the molds that became his first two WS sets. I guess back in the day Andy didn't have access to the sculpters he presently employs and just had to make due.

Yeah I thought so. I even passed up some WS01 and WS02 on ebay years ago because I thought they were Airfix at first. They sold cheap and I kick myself everytime I think about it.

OK don't ask me what happened here. But at least it is clear. With the exception of the obvious Kand C All are painted by me and are italieri or conte

I like your Airfix A/Korps repaints as well Alex. A few guys have told me that it's best to prepare the surface of Airfix and other plastic figures prior to painting. Can you provide some tips on what to do before the new paint is applied?

I will attempt to post some plastic soon- always seem to have trouble posting pics. Need a "remedial class" from my son. Nice pictures guys, really nice entertainment. I usually wash figures in dish soap after triming seams and any flash. Then I spray them with Krylon plastic white or grey spray paint. This paint is new in last few years for spraying lawn furniture and other plastic materials. It comes in a variety of colors. When dry, I spray a coat of white acrylic hobby primer like Armory brand. After figures are painted I usually spray a coat of gloss varnish and then a coat of matte varnish. This protects them. Seem to hold ok. Leadmen

Airfix figures have a lot of fine detail which can be obscured by everyday aerosol paints and primers. Excelent results can be obtained using games workshop miniature primer. It is very fine and will not cover up details. It is expensive:eek: but worth it!:) I was skeptical at first but, the results speak for themselves

I wash them with soap and warm water and remove excess flash which wasn't very much with a hobby knife or sanding stick. Then I use a grey primer and let it dry for a day then start painting.

Here is some San Diego WWll German and US forces I painted in plastic. Leadmen

I have some Britains Deetail figures that came prepainted which makes my Airfix and Matchbox unpainted WWII soldiers look underdressed. This is may explain my request for some pre painting tips.

What you guys have said is much the same as the accepted method downunder.
Which is to soak and wash them in soapy water to remove any oils etc that may have stuck after the molding process. Then coat the figure with a grey undercoat that's suitable for plastic.

What about removing paint from poorly painted plastic figures - any tips there? I have tried hydraulic fluid, and it does work proved you don't leave them soaking for to long - otherwise they get that 'melting face' look :)

I use a product called Simple Green which is not harmfull and soak figures for a day or so and scrub off paint with an old toothbrush. I don't know if you get this product. It can be used straight or diluted. I did learn a lesson when I took some of the cleaner to clean old plastic painted guys and it started to take paint off. Leadmen

What colors did you use for the airborne troopers there? What brand paint did you use?

I used mainly Tamiya Acrylic paints and some Vallejo paints. Tamiya Khaki drab or desert yellow with buff highlights for jackets and belts and Tamiya earth for trousers. Also some red brown, olive drab and light green.Tamiya paints also match many King & Country figures for touch-ups.Sometimes I use Humbrol enamels on figures. Leadmen
