Progress on Tarawa dioramas (3 Viewers)

Looks good Harrie !
I'm impressed with your painting effect there.
What did you use in the end to make your Sea

Steve

Thanks Steve

The base of the waves is made of gray epoxy mortar than a layer of Fnauf superfiller gypsum with wood glue after drying! multi color paint from model color Vallejo

The sea water is not ready yet. I'm still looking for the right sea water color I think I'm almost there. then I do water Texture Transparent 26.201 from, Vallejo over than it gets a good Gloss effect.

Gotta' agree with Robin and Steve, your "sea" is looking like a masterpiece.
Maybe you mentioned, in a previous thread ... but who makes the Sherman Tank?
Is it a BMC or a kit?

Everything is coming together so wonderfully,as Robin said, .... OFF TO A MUSEUM. {sm3}

--- LaRRy

Thank you larry

The Sherman Tank is the hard plastic resin KnC 001 from King And Country.

Following on from Harrie's suggestion for a new thread on Tarawa Dioramas.
Here's my progress.
I managed to find time to do the Seawall which in the end I've stuck to some hardboard with hot glue, but I need to tidy it up some, trimming down the board so that it's not noticeable as it is at present and cut off the excess glue.

Also after watching that Tarawa footage I saw that the sand I was using was far too dark for the dry sand there, the wet appearance at the tideline I think is ok still. Fortunately I had enough light colour sand to redo.
My tideline I think I will tidy up a bit trimming a few bits off and add some barbed wire there, most of posts will probably have been smashed and torn down by the Amtracs driving over them.

Still need to work on bunker though I may go with the one I've got but just add some sloping sides etc.
Need to get some more dowelling for trenches, also make a couple of dozen or so sandbags, I was thinking of either ones made from milliput or air drying clay.

For empty cartridge cases to scatter by the firing Marines I'm thinking of either some Brass rod, cut it to length, which sounds like it's going to be a tedious job so I may only do a few ! But I'll need to get the diameter right or maybe just paint some wire brass and cut to length.

Certainly need some more Marines to take up positions on the beach. Hopefully K&C will release some more in December !

Some photos.

Hi Poppo

I used a transparent sealant, the sort you would use for Windows/ Bathrooms. I tried two the cheapest when set was a little cloudy and a dearer one which was the best one for me, it's by Unibond which is clear and was solvent free, which believe me is very important if you are using this stuff inside !

Though you may not be able to get this brand in your country I'm sure there will be something just as good. Here's a link so you can see the type of thing I'm on about.

Having noticed on the colour footage from Tarawa that quite a few of the Marines are wearing the reversible Camouflage kit, mostly of the light green background. I thought I'd have a go at reproducing it on four of my figures !

P.s.: those are awesome pictures!!

Thanks Harrie, I saw you had done this before on one of your figures in your diorama.

Steve

Looks great Harrie, especially like your water spouts from shells exploding in the water effect. I've been thinking of adding a couple to mine and seeing how yours have turned out means I will have to try hard to equal yours !:salute::

Steve

"Hope you like it/" ... Harrie it is fantastic, {sm3} ... from the water, to the shells exploding and the water effect, to the palm trees and then to the bunkers and then the ground work and backdrops and the .........

TRULY a "Museum quality" work in all aspects.

Thanks guys
My Tarawa diorama is almost ready! I'm still working on a few small things when that is finished, then I put a few pictures of the whole diorama on the forum.

Best Tarawa Sherman ..bar none..some out there are better suited to D+2 ,not PTO USMC. Correct LVT. Still...2nd Mar Div predominantly
clothed in full camo with full packs(On day1).Japs did not have metal beach obstacles(not in yours).Regardless, kudos to all efforts in giving due diligence
to PTO dioramas/vignettes. Put some Stuarts out there as well. Nicely done,Sir! Any questions on this matter I would be happy to oblige.

Hi Randy
A couple of questions.
You mention LVT 1's being correct, is this just pertaining to this beach ?
As I've read that LVT 2's were also used though in fewer numbers which I've been using for my diorama since there aren't any Figarti LVT 1's for sale, where the cost of postage and customs and Post office dues don't double the cost same with old K&C LVT 2's !
Presumably the higher LVT id's numbers would be the LVT 2's as newer equipment delivered to the Marines ?

Randy afraid wanting totally correct kit for the marines while would be ideal looks like wewon't be getting it as missing backpacks as you know the new K&C Marines don't have, keep costs down and same goes for cammo gear.

I've still got a lot to do with my dio with building more trees, sand bags, shell holes etc.
Plus I've got other projects on the go like the Barbarian castings that have arrived and need painting up for a Roman dio !

Hopefully we'll get to see a few more Tarawa / PTO dioramas !
Have you made one yourself ? if so can you upload a few pics please even if you are still in the process one as it's good to get ideas to bounce off other forum members with !

All Best

Steve
