Resale market collapse (1 Viewer)

Wayne,
It is called "Kare Kare" a Philippino dish of oxtail with a nice sauce on rice.
So now you know your two Ebay purchases last year were for a good cause :D:D:D

Brett

Brett,

e-bay has always provoked controversy and will always do so. I think K&C are doing their bit to stop this with thier own auctions and now classic Discontinued which, will I think not eradicate over pricing but, give collectors another outlet to get those older pieces. I think this is a good thing for the market and collectors and, in a perverse way dealers also.

I think its all about money (is not nearly everything) and sadly, some will be able to afford higher prices than others and, that is the way its always going to be. That does not mean these things should not be sold for whatever they can achieve. I think a lot of people are concerned about being 'ripped off' but, I always say just follow that instinct inside and, if you feel you are getting a deal whatever the cost then go for it if not, walk away.

Brett,
I can understand you putting some items on ebay when they have been setting around for a while and aren't selling but I've seen items just come out and be on ebay by dealers. This is what I don't think is quite right or someone who doesn't put them out for sale and hoards them until they think the time is right to put them on ebay.
Mark

Well it's about time. :):):)

It's sad when you try to purchase a retired piece that's not too old and some JOKER is asking upwards of a $1000.00 dollars. This wonderful hobby should not alienate someone from getting involved in collecting because of cost. Yes, make a profit but not bankrupt an individual. I know adults both young and old who would love to get involved in this hobby, but can't, due to cost or even because the cost of finding past pieces to make a collection worth while is just TOO EXPENSIVE to get involved with in the first place. My son and his friends are a perfect example.
Maybe, people NOW see that it's MADNESS to pay $800.00 for a tank and two figures that was only released several years ago.
I can understand soldiers produced 30,40,50 plus years ago, fetching a high price for particular reasons, but recent releases shouldn't TURBINIZE someone.
This market should be about producing wonderful toy soldiers and at the same time allow the inclusion of as many collectors as possible and NOT EXCLUDE them because of the price. Money can still be made by the fist-fulls and still allow the average Joe to be a participant.

a lot like the advice given to home "flippers" afew years ago,,now entire areas of major cities have flipped into abandoned devastation

What does this mean? Please fill me in as I've not heard about this before

I was just stating that with the ongoing controversy about prices and dealings on e-bay that the recent addition to K&C UK website classic discontinued may reduce some of the higher prices on e-bay for older collectables.

Ah. I just took a look at their classic discontinued page. Seems to me that they are open to the same criticism as the rest of us are for selling older material on eBay. The pricing doesn't seem that different.

Where are we going with this thread ?

It looks like the same old points of contention have surfaced again.

It all started with the Kaiser's staff car.

For this I say, "A swallow does not make a summer".

Markets (all types) will go up and down in cyclical fashion influenced by a host of variables.

So what is new ?

Happy Easter, Raymond.:)

Dear Raymond:
I agree with your your well stated comments. Perhaps everyone should just buy and sell their toy soldiers sets as they see fit and leave it go at that.
Best regards, Gary - "Iron Brigade" 4-4-2010

Actually,I admire you guys who sell your collection on ebay,I can never bring myself to part with any of it:eek:

That is a very difficult decision for many collectors to make! For probably 20 years I rarely sold anything......how would I ever replace something I sold?

One day I was looking at a group of 10 dinky toys at a flea market and the fellow wanted $1000+ for them. I said to my wife.....well I guess my

days of buying dinky's are over. She said why don't you sell some of your duplicates?

From that day on I have used my collections to fund new purchases, it has allowed me to remain active and discover that you can find anything if you

search hard enough.

Many of us have family obligations, a home, new car, college eductions for our children. Or perhaps its that one item that you have always wanted that

now is very expensive. You might not want to spend the $$$$ but what if you could trade 3 or 4 items for it.....:)

My collection is my most trusted partner....it has brought me a lot of enjoyment over the years, and allowed me to find new items daily. All of

which are carefully cleaned, and cared for and some of which will be shared with other collectors one day.:)

He are my two latest treasures......both 1954 Smith Miller B-Macks from the last year they were offered. They are nearly 3 feet long and weight

11lbs! Now thats a classic toy you can wrap your hands around!:)

One thing that is not collapsing is this thread.
It goes on and on.

Strange comment.......if you want it to end, just stop reading it.

If not what not express your views? Its always interesting to read what

other collectors think. Agree, or disagree, others point of view are often

entertaining.:)

I am enjoying it so will keep reading.
Just seems that folks cannot live and let live.
As you know John I agree mostly with your point of view.
I don't sell but I am gald what I have bought is generally increasing in value or at least holding its value. Compare this to my vehicle which is now five years old and worth half of what I paid for it.
I would not like it if sets I bought (for love) were now worthless.
Maybe one day I will take your advice and start selling a few older sets to finance my collecting.

Several points. Does the Treefrog pin count? A true collector it seems to me would rarely be happy with what he or she has. The very nature of a collector is one who searches for more or better. Lancer mentioned there are probably 1700
different opinions here as to what a collector is.

So it seems to me that buying and selling and even trading are all factors in a collecting addiction. And oh yes, it is an addiction. Try stopping right now if you do not believe me.:eek: I quit once. It was the worst 5 minutes of my life:rolleyes::p.

The market has its ups and downs. It weeds out some and makes room for others. Seems to me that now is a great time to get some of those elusive / expensive pieces that some people are wailing about as being too expensive.

Nice long thread though.:D

I agree, we are all collectors here or we wouldn't be posting. We may have

different views, on what to collect, or how to collect.....but we can still learn

from each other.....and should remain civil.

It is nice when you see that something you have purchased has increased in

value, especially as you point out with vehicles often that is not the case.

My first new car a 1969 SS396 Chevelle cost me $3630!

Today a new car easily costs more then my first house!

Except when you go to trade it in!:D

Oh Yeah.......well I still think there should be a Height

requirement on that "true collector" pin!

Who wants a Giant 6' 6" guy spotting all the good buys at the

shows!

Ah.....we did agree to wave the "weight" thing didn't we.

I stated my beliefs earlier. But i will add this. Those obnoxious starting bids or buy it now prices that are ridiculously high annoy me.

Any given day is the motto on those. LIke I have stated many times before, I had a friend who used to buy and sell used cars as a hobby, I sometimes would question his wisdom and say, "Who is going to buy that heap?", his quick answer:

"There is a rear for every seat". Always stuck with me as a "lifeism".

Anyhow, if I am selling something I deem valuable, I don't mess around, I put the lowest dollar value I will accept as the starting bid, no matter what the number is. If it sells, great, if not, I am still happy to have it.
