The hussar carrying a flag and holding onto another horse- I've decided that the most practical way to sculpt the draped flag is to create a strong structure upon which I can sculpt the drapery.
The horses of the two dragoons can hardly be seen. So I've salvaged some discarded mounts and use then. Will modify the head poses.
At this stage, I've hit a milestone. Recruited the last of the visible foreground mtd figure. Following some sculpting updates, I've now started to testfit the figures within the scene. After some staging, the figures are pinned to lock them into their positions. This is probably the most enjoyable part of doing a box diorama, seeing it all come together for the first time.
The bkgd is quite dry, ready for another round of painting. I have tinkered around with the foreground and placed it against the bkgd. Some figures have already been removed for further sculpting and painting.
Generally the figures are more or less in the right place. But I will probably shift the foreground to the right as I have a lot of mtd figures to the left side.
Completed the bkgd painting. Not painting every single figure in the bkgd which is extremely detailed. Just trying to achieve a harmonious effect for this diorama.
I sawed off the right edge of the foreground base. Tightened up the location of the central figures. I also hollowed out a depression for the wounded white horse rump to settle down into the ground. Then I built up more of the base and scattered some tiny rocks here and there.
I also found an old artillery kit undercarriage, looking very similar to the gun carriage in the painting. All the pieces are in play.
Devloping the foreground scene. I painted the groundwork and attached two figures for reference. When dried, other figures were carefully placed and reattached, and the groundwork was further redone. I actually added some high ground to the left section to elevate some of the horsemen. Getting there.
The groundwork was further built up. I readjusted the positions of some figures. Little details continue to crop up as I develop the piece.
Notice a red plume added for the red mounted hussar. I added the artillery piece and painted the scene with some key figures already glued in place. I also tried to blend the figures into the scene.
Now working on finalising the right side of the piece. Flanked by two horses, I created a lower groundwork to create "distance" for the mtd hussar holding on to LaSalles' horse.
Further buildup and painting of the groundwork. This update shows all the figures which are now firmly attached to the scene. Notice the added bicorne hat on the ground. There are still 5 mounted figures to be attached! And 2 more smaller mounted figures in the background!
This project is quite consuming and so far, I haven't had a chance to deviate to other projects.
These are the 5 mtd figures and 1 horse to be added to the foreground. Most of the main sculpting and conversion has been done, followed by a slap of paint. I've decided that the flag is a captured Austrian flag and have added a representative finial.
When dry, their positions will be carefully determined as the remaining space is getting limited.
Great to have your inputs as usual. You probably expect me to model those nails on the flagpole, too?... The pole is left bare in this painting but I think that Austrian flag poles are painted with red white black winding stripes. Think I'll follow the painting here...hahaha.
I've worked out the placement of the 5 + 1 additional figures. Not yet glued in place but just attached by wires into pre-drilled holes. I'll have to paint them more substantially first.
