Shyster, Shyster & Flywheel (2 Viewers)

Rob...

the thread here was to some based on xenophobia and its like a patchwork quilt this one now. never in favour of seeing threads taken down but, this should be given the last rights and sent the way of the others lately.

Mitch, my fault I got my our wires crossed, I didn't think the thread was based on xenophobia at all but I've been told that my remarks about US tv were replied to in a xenophobic manner. I think most of us are just having a chat back and forth etc with some humour, but some will always take offence.

Cheers

Whilst I did not find the use of the word shyster as offensive in the outset of this thread I am not jewish and, cannot truly understand how it could be taken in that way. one member voiced his concerns and, really we should have pulled the plug on this then as, it was clear, it was taken offensively. Thats what I meant about xenophobic from the start. Instead we have had a couple of reply threads deleted and, some comments which, under the guise of jokes have been near the knuckle for some.

I am as guilty of putting insensitive comments on here without thinking the repercussions my mexican joke which, I placed in the joke thread cost me a hefty infraction. What I find amusing is the discussion that we seem to condone what is really rude behaviour either because of who it is or, now because its a alleged countries humour which, is a big pot of......

Most of this thread is stuff that would not normally be allowed in a K&C thread and removed to another area of the forum anyway.

I am Jewish, and do NOT take offence to it- with Jewish jokes, I believe there is a steep line separating unacceptable from ok. I really don't care about stupid stereotypes, but the second the Holocaust enters in, the "joke" becomes perhaps the most offensive thing that anyone can say to me. Some would say we joke about our differences to trivialize them, but there is no excuse for joking about mass murder or genocide.

Just saying that that is where I draw the line, and I don't think this crosses it. I agree with most of your post- hope I didn't hijack or the like.

Kind of stayed away from this, but I have to comment. My wife is fully blooded Jewish, I am a convert for harmony sakes and to me it is more about family/culture anyhow, not that this is relevant! Anyhow, back to my point - the word shyster may have had a connotation to some many moons ago, but today, to my knowledge and experience has been used to describe anybody crooked regardless of race, relgion, creed, etc.

Brad is a good friend and I cannot comment on his feelings as he is entitled to them whatever they are. I can comment that in my opinion, there is a hyper sensitivity to anything due to an overabundance of political correctness in today's world (not Brad's thinking per se). I think tone and context are important and I see no offensiveness by Andy's post. I think he was simply trying to explain the peril of copyrights and the "extortion" businesses go through to use likenesses of historical people.

As to Happy Days..............................oh God, i heard that song enough as a kid, I have taken a 30 year break!!!

Not that it matters, but that is my 2 cents.

As a lawyer, I can tell you the term shyster crosses all denominations. Regardless,I take no umbrage in the label. Like they say, 99% of the attorneys give the other 1% a bad name!
