South Africa 2010 (2 Viewers)

As noted, the name of the game for Spain or for any team for that matter is ball control. If you have it they don't and it's as simple as that. I didn't see all of the Paraguay match, but I believe Paraguay actually had a great deal of possession which caused some problems for the Spanish. I expect Netherlands to try to play like they did against Brasil, very physical. Frankly, I think that should have been stopped but the ref let them get away with it. I don't think the same thing will happen here. If it does it could make it more of an open match. However, Brasil fell into the Dutch trap and tried to descend to their level. I don't think Spain will make the same mistake, not to mention they will have a few days to prepare for the Dutch tactics.

I fully agree with that! How van Bommel can finish his games is a mystery to me; this guy is probably the most unfair person ever seen on a football pitch. He plays foul on every touch he has! I h*** him.

Well I don't know how much soccer or football how we call it here you watch Terry, but what Spain did was a tactical masterclass. Having 84% possession of the ball speaks on its own. How would you expect Germany to play attacking football if for 85 minutes they just run behind the ball? They just didn't have the ball, as simple as that. And to say it is boring to watch is a bit ignorant - sorry to say.

In Europe, football games don't very often end 10-8 and Spain's aim was to win, right? So by priving these fantastic Germans from having the ball, from wearing them out, from making them tired and from being extremely patient,
they were able to do it.

But no other team in the world - apart from Barca of course - is capable of playing this small passing game. So hat's off to them. Germany were outclassed, even if 90% of the forum members are not happy to read that and I stick to my posts from after the England game.

I watch a fair bit and have for decades. And I agree with much of what you said. You ask how could Germany play if they didn't have the ball - you are right. They needed to move a few guys up and really pressure Spain and attack their defense with quick breaks and long passes down the wings. Consider the game was almost through the first half before a foul was called. But when Germany did get the ball, they passed backwards as much as Spain did. They weren't going to beat Spain at their own game.

Spain vs Germany

Germany never looked like they could win. Spain owned the ball.

I was also happy to see relatively little acting/diving from the players on both sides.

There are so many cameras now that the fans see it all once, twice, three times with replays, slow motion and different angles. There is no where for the officals to hide. Because of this it might be time to introduce limited challenges the way American football does. Still there isn't constant play stoppage in soccer making such challenges easy to handle.

I wonder what Holland will be planning to stop the Spanish ball control.

I agree on Van Bommel, he looks like a very bad type, cynical really...

Spain v. Germany
Spain played a brilliant game. Most pundits here are saying Germany tried to play counter attack but made the mistake of defending too deep in their own half thus giving Spain a lot of space to build their passing game. They, including coaches, say that the only chance any team has against Spain is to press them for the ball up in Spain's midfield. Overall I was disappointed with Germany's performance on this game. Have you guys heard of the octopus that predicts Germany's results? It has predicted all Germany's results at this World Cup, and all predictions were right! The octopus lives in a German aquarium and chooses to eat from two boxes, one with the German flag and the other with the other team's flag, the chosen box «is» the winnning team:D. This time it chose the box with the Spanish flag:D. Now Germany having lost the European Championship final to Spain in 2008, I wonder if the predictions of the Octopus (that goes by Paul) played any part on German minds before the game:D:D.
Back to the teams, although Spain is an extremely talented team I have to say that to me Germany played the most beautiful football at this World Cup, except for this game. I like their pace and attacking combinations, their attacking punch, Spain has a slower buildup that I don't enjoy as much, although their passing game and skill are second to none.
I'll be rooting for the Netherlands but I would say Spain have 60% chances...

Paulo (mind you, I am no octopus...:D)

I think it will be a much rougher game than against Germany where the first foul wasn't called until near the end of the half. I don't think the Dutch will give Spain 2/3 of the field to play their passing game, but if the do they will lose.

Terry

This Cup was very unpredictable, we never though to see Spain dominate the Germans as they did, so we have to wait next Sunday.....

IMO is going to be 1 X 0 Spain....:D

Speaking of the octopus, whose name is Paul, the fact that he picked Spain unnerved the German players, according to some news reports I read. He apparently had been picking games since the 2008 Euros. What his handler does is put food into some sort of box with the flag of the German team and the opponent and he picks one. They showed this on CNN. People are so incensed that they want to now cook him. However, Paul's handler is having none of this.

The whole team could have a leg each! (well nearly :p):D:D

If we can believe (and he was correctly at all 6 Games of Germany) Paul.....this will be the final result of the WC.

1. Spain
2. Netherland
3. Germany
4. Urugay

:D

By the way.............paul is form England. :)

The news in Germany said the other day that since a lot of Germans wanted to see Paul in the frying pan, the Spanish authorities were about to send some bodyguards for him :D
I think he will live happily ever after with the last predictions that "Fat Boy" showed below ;)
Konrad

Let's hope Germany wins third place for Paul's sake :D

He can then take a rest until Euro 2012 :)

On last night's news a parrott or a parakeet (Dutch I believe) predicted the Netherlands. Superstitition knows no bounds

I just saw the 3rd place game, very entertaining, they are traditionally open games. Defending was a little slack though:D. Congrats Germany, a team to watch for the future!
Tomorrow, I just hope Holland and Spain, being possession freaks as they are, don't turn the game into something monotonous, like trading 600 sidewards and backwards passes till the opposition lies exhausted on the floor and then take a shot at goal with 20 minutes left:D. I am especially afraid of Spain when it comes to this, they did look more fluid and attacking minded when they were European Champions with coach Luis Aragonés.
Please give us some goals and attacking punch (if you can amidst all the tactical and defensive ploys to get the ultimate prize: THE CUP that millions are waiting for

It was a little touch and go , i was very surprised to see the starting German lineup . For Klose , Lahm and team captain Podolski to be setting this one out was a little shocking  hopefully Klose's pinched nerve is nothing to serious , It's a shame as he was very close to the record , some very bad passing by some players resulting in giving the ball away reminded me of the game against Spain. They are a young team like you say and will be ready for a rematch with Spain in 2012 :) I'm looking forward to this final , I look for Nederland to push the attack . Its been an interesting thread thanks guys . All the best Gebhard

We have had the chance

ESPA

Yes they did earn it, but once again I have to say that poor refereing and "simulation" tainted the match imho. It brings shame to the players and the game of Football/Soccer that so much effort is put into pretending to be fouled
