South Africa 2010 (5 Viewers)

Perhaps someone can answer this for me but I've always wondered why the UK have three different teams: England, Scotland and Wales? I can't think of two many countries that have something similar.

Brad,

I am not sure of the answer/s to your question.

However, the reason may be somehow related to IFAB which comprises the English FA, Scottish FA, FA of Wales and Irish (Northern) FA.

Both IFAB and FIFA oversee the Laws of the Game.

By the way, Northern Ireland has it own team too.

The United Kingdom is made up of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales. Hence four International teams.

I do remember last year in Chicago when my wife asked Andy Neilson if he is English…He (Andy) looked my wife with big yes... and said: I am Britain not English.....

Rob ,

Gebbie,

I'm overseas know so does that count? Anyway, I love Tommie. I think he does and has done for a long time a great job.

Totally unfair. I want my Westphalian and Bavarian teams. That would eliminate all the poor performing north German players.

05.07.2010 11:39 2010 World Cup
World Press compliments the German team

Germany is in the semi final of the World Cup in South Africa. The world press compliments the German team for a strong 4:0 victory against favourite Argentina.

L'Equipe (France): Team spirit, passion and talent – the German players convey enthusiasm to the World Cup. That is a team, indeed. With again four goals and an impressive runny match, it snuffed out Argentina.

Sunday Times (England): Thomas Müller shames Lionel Messi. The Germans finish in an impressive way Argentina’s World Cup dream.

La Repubblica (Italy): Joachim Löw’s wonderful German team plays the most beautiful football of the tournament and teaches another favourite after England an unforgettable lesson. Four goals against Argentina and good night, Maradona!

Neue Zürcher Zeitung am Sonntag (Switzerland): With an impressive performance, Joachim Löw’s team wrote a chapter of World Cup history, which could be ending with a dream come true. For Argentina and Diego Maradona this chapter is over.

Kurier (Austria): A lesson: The perhaps cleverest Germans of all times outclass Argentinean superstars 4:0 and are in the semi final.

Expressen (Sweden): You can only enjoy that. That marvellous German team lets heaviness look like a child’s play.

Dagbladet (Norway): Germany’s six first minutes around their 1:0 lead was perhaps the best football that has ever been played. Hunger in the Löw-team makes it now a clear World Cup- favourite.

De Telegraaf (Netherlands): Germany ended Argentina’s Coach Diego Maradon’s dream ungentle, to become World Champion also as a manager.

La Dernière Heure (Belgium): Who can stop this team that has grown to a dream factory, with thirteen goals in five world cup matches? Joachim Löw was well advised to reduce its team average-age to 24 years. The German culture of winning was transmitted without any difficulty from one generation to the other. The Germans have let its label to be cold and efficient behind and created football full of creativity.

Blic (Serbia): Joachim Löw’s team has demonstrated knowledge, power, strength, discipline and efficiency. That was yet another match that took your breath away.

Telegraf (Bulgaria): Great spectacle in Capetown. Nobody stops Germany. The team makes Argentina and Maradona cry.

Clarin (Argentina): Germany was superior. They occupied midfield cleverly, attacked better and more often than Argentina; and Schweinsteiger was simply formidable. Only those, who were a real team on the pitch, succeeded to qualify for the semi final.

Lance! (Brazil): Germany doesn’t play like in the past. They are fast, determined and smooth. Germany is in the semi final and moreover the biggest favourite to win the trophy.

Los Angeles Times (USA): Bitter pill for Argentina. Pacy and runny football makes Germany a clear world cup favourite.

Yediot Aharonot (Israel): Germany embarrasses Argentina and qualifies for the semi final. One third of Israelis believe in Joachim Löw’s team

I liked it better when it was 10 to 1 odds . This is like the KISS OF DEATH :eek: any other superstitous fans out there ??

I don't think all those newspaper quotes will bring bad luck to Germany. They have the speed and ability to beat any of the remaining teams IMO and I really don't think all the superlatives will jinx them.

Terry

In the FIFA statutes, it states that: " Each of the four British (Football) Associations is recognised as a separate Member of FIFA."

It also states: "An Association in a region which has not yet gained independence may, with the authorisation of the Association in the country on which it is dependent, also apply for admission to FIFA."

My god, I never thought this day would ever come. A common Spanish expression is that certain things will happens si Dios quiere. Hoy, Dios le quieria.

Espana en el final. Quien lo hubiera creido posible?

Spain, of course, in the final, both emotionally and logically :)

You are a happy man now Mr. Brad...congratulations to your Furia, I was very surprised....Now we going to have for the second time two finalists who never won before...

interesting game on next Sunday

SPAIN-1 GERMANY-0

The best soccer game "The Red"

Congratulations Spain, I didn't see the match but hope to see a replay soon. I think it is an indication of the future of soccer that two teams that haven't won before have been so succesful. I guess increasing globalization has allowed a greater mix of players making sides more even. Hopefully FIFA adopts television options for rule control which will increase fairness as imo the longer term FIFA countries used to get the benefit of the doubt more often than they should.

I am not a dedicated Soccer fan and haven't yet seen that match. However it seems to me that Soccer results are hard to forecast, who will beat who, and by how much.

For example Australia held Ghana to 1-1, Germany beat Australia 4-0, yet Germany only beat Ghana 1-0

Can you imagine that a Team scoring just 7 goals in 6 games can advance to a World Cup final. Spain played well in 2/3 of the field and despite about 15 chances, could only get one goal. I still don't think they are very good at finishing an attack and IMO they are not what I would consider to be a championship quality team. If the game is all about ball control and playing in your own 2/3 of the field, they are very good at that - it's just not exciting to watch.

As for Germany, they didn't play their attacking game. They played back defensively and allowed Spain to dictate the pace of the game and with only 3 chances at goal until the last 10 minutes were inviting disaster.

Unless the Dutch get an early goal, I expect Netherlands vs Spain will be a real yawn for anyone except the fans of those two teams who will be delerious, especially since one of the teams is guaranteed to be a first time World Cup winner. Could this be a 0 - 0 draw through 90 minutes and 30 minutes overtime with another WC decided on penalty shots?

Well I don't know how much soccer or football how we call it here you watch Terry, but what Spain did was a tactical masterclass. Having 84% possession of the ball speaks on its own. How would you expect Germany to play attacking football if for 85 minutes they just run behind the ball? They just didn't have the ball, as simple as that. And to say it is boring to watch is a bit ignorant - sorry to say.

In Europe, football games don't very often end 10-8 and Spain's aim was to win, right? So by priving these fantastic Germans from having the ball, from wearing them out, from making them tired and from being extremely patient,
they were able to do it.

But no other team in the world - apart from Barca of course - is capable of playing this small passing game. So hat's off to them. Germany were outclassed, even if 90% of the forum members are not happy to read that and I stick to my posts from after the England game.

Yo Troopers, agree with both Terry & Steve's comments. Germany invited disaster trying to defend against Spain. The only way to beat Spain which is basically made up from the Barcelona & Real Madrid teams is to be brave and get in their faces and stop them playing their passing game, get the ball off them and attack them. The Spanish defense can be taken apart very easy its not part of their game. Inter Milan showed how to stop them and beat them in the Champions League, they had no answer, its a case of who dares wins. Holland will probably try to rough them up somewhat IE: Van Bommel should be in a cage he doesn't take any prisoners, so lets see if Spain can handle that.
But having said all that must say its the worst World Cup I have seen going all the way back to 1966, mostly boring games to watch. Most TV panels of experts reckon the ball played a major part in this, it just wasn't right for the World Cup to many class players couldn't get to grips with it. The Referee's as usual were very poor. FIFA pick as many referees from different Countries as they can just because its the World Cup, but most are not good enough. They should pick the top referees from around the world even if it means four or five are from one Country. My star of the World Cup was Diego Forlan, never stops trying and is just a class player.
Bernard.
