Still some sympathizers... (1 Viewer)

I have German friends and treat individuals in the same way as anyone else, but I have always had a distrust of the German State. In my opinion they have far too great an influence in European affairs and look to be trying to accomplish by devious means what they failed to achieve by feat of arms. Trooper

I love you Brits to pieces but that was "you" up till WW II and/or the Suez crisis. Glad you folks are over all that.

I don't think you have to be a fervent Germanophile, though, to agree that the German nation, that is, the Germans, in their historical territory, sitting on the resources it does and athwart the travel routes that it does, is a natural leader on the Continent. One of the ironies of the First World War is that Germany would have had a dominant economic position, and therefore, political position, without having to fight for it. More astute foreign policy, and much more mature and talented men to carry it out, would have achieved that aim. What I mean is that, in any constellation of European states, Germany is positioned to be primus inter pares, as it were, or at least, sharing a leadership position with France. I have no fear of the Bundesrepublik.

Prost!

“Once all the Germans were warlike and mean
But that couldn't happen again
We taught them a lesson in nineteen eighteen
And they've hardly bothered us since then”

Bibles and rum don't work for some colonies.

Reminds me of the SNL sketch featuring Dana Carvey as George Bush, speaking after the fall of the Berlin Wall: "Reunification of Germany, that big country comin' together like it does. Scary. Sure they are frightening people, got that track record of theirs. Sword of Siegfried comin' at ya."

I showed my German exchange student a certain scene from Thr Producers. I think the majority of Germans are ver scared and embarased about this part of their past, though as always I hate Neo Nazis with a passion similar to the passion with which I love France{sm4}! Also, I saw a bunch of flats and Niena today. Both overpriced, so I'll get the same ones on eBay and from Nick Cameron.

Laugh out loud funny. A classic.

Hess is a hard one to comment on. He certainly was a nefarious Nazi which I abhor, but there is a might lot of controversy surrounding his capture, imprisonment, conviction for life as well as his suicide.

Amazing isn't it that he never spoke or wrote about the war and his participation. He was already jailed for life and the truth and terror about Nazi Germany was well documented and known. What secret did he take to his grave, if any? What did the Russians fear? The Brits? The US? Maybe nothing, but an interesting story/mystery all the same.

The ironic thing is, if you are a NeoNazi, kind of surprising you would hold Hess in such high esteem, I mean he fled Germany in 1941 knowing it was a lost cause then and Hitler was nuts! Not a true dummy after all.

Anyhow, enough rantings, but his story always has caught my curiosity and imagination.

"A shot across the bow" among friends is better than "crossing the T" with a broadside I'd say.

Bibles and rum don't work for some colonies.

Surely.

So how did those "other colonies" turn out? More or less successful than the US? If the former please do elaborate.

So you don't trust us

Judging a modern nation of people on their actions of decades ago. Mmm, there's a word beginning with R I believe sums it up best.

What do my British friends think?:wink2:

Now Now gents....I told my British friend two nice things, love and redemption, and one true thing.

"In an 1865 speech in Oakland, California, Rev. W. B. Brown of New Jersey quipped that the reason the sun never set upon the Empire was that God did not trust the British in the dark"

You're Welcome.

The man is dead they should leave it be absent a request from his family. Given all the conspiracy theories on Hess, this will just add notoriety to someone who is largely forgotten by most people.

People seem prety happy about it over here in Germany. I think it's quite a different thing over here than it is for us talking about it.
On the fence about this,
Sandor
