The Moonlight Charge at Kassassin Lock 1882
General Graham had to secure the Lock and its precious contents – drinking water – without which Wolseley’s campaigns against Arabi Pasha had no hope of succeeding.
Graham was out-numbered five to one and was being hard pressed by the Egyptians. As darkness fell, the Household Cavalry including squadrons from the Horse Guards and the 1st Life Guards led by
Lieutenant-General Sir Drury Curzon Drury-Lowe GCB (of AZW Battle of Ulundi fame) attacked by moonlight, the famous Moonlight Charge. The Egyptian Army fled the field.
