One of the many things I love about this forum are the ideas shared here among us members.

Some of the ideas that have intrigued me the most is how fellow collectors display their collections.

No doubt most of us utilize glassed in display cases, small display units or just simple bookshelves. Another aspect is how we display our figures and vehicles, whether in ranks, as solo pieces or in diorama form.

One of the display options that captured my attention is how Tristan (tmanthegreat) makes those framed dio's. While I am not a very creative/artistic person, I thought that his idea was something I could have some success with.

I recently tried his idea out on a small vignette and thought I'd share my results with you after purchasing 3 figures from JJD's SYW range of the 84th regiment.

Here are a few step by step photos followed by the finished piece:

Very nicely done Mark. Like you, I also appreciate Tristan's framed vignettes. About two years ago I started making similar framed displays myself.

Beautiful! You turned something relatively simple into an artfully sophisticated design. Love the figures but unfamiliar with them. They are distinctively JJD but i dont think I've ever seen them before. Are they from the Seven Years War? If so, can they be used in an American Revolution diorama? In all my years of collecting, I've never created a diorama but feeling motivated by my fellow collectors.

Thank you and yes these are from the SYW. However, the 84th regiment (a/k/a Coote's regiment) did not participate in the AWI. Coote's 84th Regiment, raised in 1758, was not the same as the 84th Regiment of Foot (Royal Highland Emigrants) that fought in the American Revolutionary War. The original 84th Regiment was disbanded in 1764.

Mark, thank you for the shoutout and glad to see other members trying out the vignette diorama idea 😃

Your vignette looks beautiful and really showcases your figures perfectly! I like how you did your terrain and foliage as well.

As with any art, the key is practice and experimentation. The more displays you create and the more new methods you try, the better you’ll get… And you’re off to a great start 😎

Thanks Tristan. I will continuing practicing, that's for sure! I have plans to do more.

Did the same for some JJD ACW cavalry. Decided those three were enough for a small collection and made an oval base to highlight the little grouping.

Wow Kenneth--well done!! I had considered doing some round ones myself but it's hard finding a frame for the circular bases. Do you plan on displaying this as is or will it go into some sort of "frame"?

One of my favorite parts of this board is to see how different collectors build their dio groundwork, very inspirational

Yes Mark, I agree how hard it is to find oval or circular frames. For that shape I buy cradled painting panels from Blick Art Materials

After the groundwork is done I'll paint sides of the cradled panel to give it a finished look. - Ken
