The Average British Soldier (2 Viewers)

I've written that the video is historically incorrect and politically divisive several times.

Frankly, I don't see why you feel the need to throw some divisive comments of your own. I don't see how it's any of your concern.

I don't see how it's politically divisive. As far as it being historically inaccurate, is that because they had an empire? Well, if so, that was then, and this is now. Should we have a grudge against Italians because their ancestors threw people to the lions?

You're not making yourself look too good with some of your statements.

I think you would be surprised at how well educated and financially sucessful some soldiers are. And regardless of their education level or bank balance they all have exactly the same thing at risk. Their lives. They were not drafted, they all chose to serve and make sacrifices when 99% of their peers have not. This video is not propaganda for or against the war, or colonialism, militarism, terrorism, socialism, or what ever else you are on about. It simply points out that soldiers deserve our respect.

Absolutely.
Thanks for posting.

Superb post that sums up the true feeling behind this video .

Well stated, No9, your summary is very concise and accurate. I wonder if our argumentative friend has ever served. Trooper

I would be very surprised to find he had done anymore than read about it!
Sorry if my spelling is wrong, it must be my lack of education and I can't afford a dictionary!^&grin^&grin

I think Scott has a point about some people entering the armed forces (all armed forces at entry level not say sandhurst etc) who may not be as academically gifted as some but they have the opportunity to learn trades and academically in the armed forces. No one I know that has left the armed forces left anything other than more intelligent.

I don't think anybody has any idea of what you are trying to say so why don't you come out and clearly say so.

Right now, you seem to be digging yourself a very deep hole.

Brad,
Consider the source, aka, the king of talking in circles and digging himself a very deep hole time and time again..................

I dunno, I was 17 and running around Currahee country and felt pretty justified in having more common sense than the West Point grads. As the old adage "HUA" goes- the acronmy actually stands for Head Up A..... well, you get the picture.

Hard for me to argue that I came out of the entire process more intelligent than when I entered. {sm4}

The British army gives an anual further education allowance to every soldier. I believe at the preset time that is £1500.

wonder if this will survive with all the cuts. Just heard that there are now serious concerns over recruitment for the SAS and their standards if cuts effect the quality of recruits. Important times for armed forces and how government views them.

I see it as a problem caused by modern profesional politician, rather than in the old days when people experianced life before going into politics. I don't believe there are any members of the coilition that have done military service!

Thanks for posting that. There were several like-themed youtube
videos that were listed also. Took me some time to watch.

Things (equipment and training) have certainly changed, but it
reminded me of when I was assigned to NATO HQ, plush assignment
to say the least. The Brits were great fun. They had a definite
advantage as they could have a beer or two with their lunch at
the Officers' Mess. We couldn't.

Each of the fourteen (at the time) NATO countries gave a big bash
for their annual event. We had the 4th of July and the Brits had
Queen's Birthday. Should have combined the events. Brits best
tattoo and ale. Americans best barbequed steak. Almost made up
for freezing my a** off in training exercises to stop the Reds
coming through the Fulda gap.

As I said, times have certainly changed. Training more intense to
say nothing of the mental toll. Big salute :salute:: to the red, white and
blue of both flag configurations to those that serve and have
served. Oh, and the Maple Leaf too. Good times at NATO back
then. Brits, Yanks and Canucks pretty much stuck together with
a couple of Danes.

The military does offer enlisted personnel opportunities for education and training along with some social advancement. My brother did well in the navy and my nephew is doing well currently in the navy. The national guard got my father out of a bad home life in the 1940s and he used the GI Bill to become a craftsman after WW II.

Excuse me my daughter has a rant I have to listen to.
