The Crusades - Siege of Acre 1291 (3 Viewers)

The thing that really stands out for me is the sculpting/posing. Take these Crusaders for instance, while you see the standard poses you commonly see on Russian connoisseur figures you also see many new and innovative poses. At the same time the sculpting is every bit as detailed and anatomically correct. From this perspective I think First Legion is actually better than the Russian studios.

I agree, my first thought was "whoa these are St. Petersburg level figs". I'd seen some in a few shops, drooled, then realized I just couldn't reach that far up the price-point.
These FL figs will do just fine...:D

BINGO and don't forget that no matter how much money you have to spend on Russian Connoisseur figures you will never get the variety of poses necessary to create the type of display we all want . I have a Great Russian Connoisseur Napoleonic Guards figure but what do the make to go with it ?? Nothing ....I have 20 Napoleonic Russian Tauride Grenadier figures from First legion all are different poses and the quality difference is negligible and for less then half the price .

I do like however the fantastic painting that you find sometimes on the draperies, clothes, etc. done by the russian studios.. But this comes with at a way higher price point.

Alex
That is quite true, there is some totally amazing painting; which comes at a pretty steep price but no doubt it is most impressive.

2500$... it's not the price the problem.. it's the shipping .. imagine having some broken parts or loss of paint on something like this.. that's the kind of piece that you go over there to pick it up and bring it with you on the plane on your lap :)

Yes I expect you would want to do that. Can you imagine taking that through airport security?

One thing that always strikes me about these is the reality they represent. Spending a large part of my life with horses, I can't imagine wearing and keeping something that beautiful and delicate clean and entact while riding. They must have had quite a few squires tasked to that.;):D

I am fortunate that I don't collect Crusaders for these would be very hard to resist :)

Hi Joe,
Good points all , Each collector has to weigh the pros and cons for themselves before making any new financial decision these days ;) I'm glad to see that you will be joining the fine group of collectors that are gravitating towards what is becoming the biggest breath of fresh air the hobby has seen in years .... First Legion .
As you know I'm also a big collector of Aeroart figures as well , IMO First Legion compare well against Aeroart and with the price of a single basic Aeroart figure now over $100.00 and with their Crusaders hitting $140.00 First Legions Crusaders at $49.95 or so will be just to good to miss .
I know you have been on the fence for some time now and I'm glad to have been a part of the group of guys to help you decide to give First legion a shot . I'm sure you will not be disappointed , I don't know how anyone could be  IMO they have by far and I mean by far the best quality to cost ratio in the business .
My man if you were impressed with the Bavarians believe me you haven't seen nothing yet . I'm not saying the Bavarians are bad , I still love em but the newer releases blow em away . I will stop running on by saying that I like a lot of other First Legion collectors could not be happier with the choice we've made. We just want to spread the good news to our fellow collectors so they can share in the same joy we are now receiving from our collections . First Legion are doing something very special indeed and everyday more and more collectors are coming to that same conclusion . I look forward to seeing your review and by all means break the ice with one or two figures from the WWII line they are incredible ;) and very addicting .. Happy collecting Gebhard

Thank you for the FL welcome Gebhard. I'm very excited to hear that FL's body of work has seen substantial improvement since the release of their Bavarians, figures that I was already very impressed with when I had the pleasure of viewing them in Ed Ruby's museum/collection. I'm really looking forward to experiencing what you and others have been describing for so long now. I'm perhaps most excited about the depth of which FL explores their ranges. I imagine the Crusader range could be quite expansive, especially if it sells as well as I'm thinking it will. The teaser pics of the Crusaders here and in the E-newsletter all but confirm the claim that FL has the best quality to cost ratio- they look stunning, and it's fun to have the day to look forward to when my first FL shipment arrives.

Here's a fun story: My wife likes to look at the pictures of the toy soldiers of my interest with me, and she always gives feedback as well (she is an artist). She can be quite a harsh judge, I tell ya! :p She often helps me make selections when I hit the wall of indecision. Well, I showed her the pics of the forthcoming Crusaders and she suggested that I display them in our curio outside of the mancave! Can you believe that? A little background info, here would be helpful...My collection is situated in a tiny extra room that we have. The curio I mentioned is in our living room where she suggested sometime ago that I display the dozen or so Aeroart figures that I have (because she said they are so well done and pieces of art). Well, if she would like more of my soldiers, this time FL's Crusaders, to imperialistically infiltrate a common family area, that sure says a lot for FL?
Of course she always reserves final judgment on a manufacturer's merits until she can study their work up close, but nonetheless, the battle is half won!;):)

If I do jump in before the Crusaders become, it would likely be for one or two Revolutionary War soldiers, or perhaps one each Russian and German from the Stalingrad line. In any case, I'll keep you appraised of any FL troop movement on my end!:)

if our wives (women) often prohibit our collection in the common rooms of the house (living room, dining room ..), I've crafty ..... Originally I planned for my aquarium small children, now they have grown and left home .. I have negotiated and obtained the agreement of Madame to expose my numbers in the aquarium FL instead of fish !!!!!;)
She finds this very aesthetic exposition.Ci be attached photo.Peut you've already seen on my blog? Regards.Guy.

Very creative solution Artmabigor. I have carved out our seldom used kitchen table as an intrusion beyond my office but it is a shaky true.;):D

Well, Guy, I now know you are more creative than the rest of us in more ways than one!!! What a fantastic idea to free the fish and deploy the troops upon the birds leaving the nest!!! I think it's safe to say you are the only one here who has a diorama built into the living room wall, and the effect is amazing, like fine art in an equally fine frame. Thank you for sharing your story and pics. Yes, I have seen your blog and admired your dioramas and the step by step layout of your artistic process. The structures and groundwork are unbelievable. Great work and great story:).

Joe

Very interesting points, I agree with what you say and feel like you do when it comes to being selective. I had also been waiting on this range, and obviously have pondered Samurai, WWII. It's Naps and Crusaders for me now! Hopefully Romans some day (please, not too soon:D)...
The Bavarians, well, IMHO FL's figures have clearly improved from then on, so my friend, you'll be in for a treat:p!

Cheers,
Paulo
We are in the same boat mate. Acre is not my favorite battle of the Crusades but after watching KoH again last night, I am pretty sure the figures can be used for earlier Crusader events. So it seems like we will have more that enough to choose from 'until' perhaps we see some Romans.:cool:

joesgis...

Nice display and innovative way to find room to display the sets

Hi Mitch, I think this thread has gotten a little convoluted w/ all the photos and quotes and such, so I must admit, although I'd like to :)p), I cannot take credit for Guy's ingenious in-wall display! Yes, that's his creative gem, and falls right in line w/ his other stellar works. You has a blog w/ more evidence of his dioramic expertise. Just want to make sure he gets credit because I'm nowhere near that level:).

Joe,
Very nice use of the aquarium, I'll bet the maintenace is much less than with fish!?!?!?:D:rolleyes:

Just to get back on track I noticed these five new figures for First Legions upcoming Crusades line . I like the Teutonic Knight on the left ;) All the best Gebhard
