The Glory of Rome (1 Viewer)

A interesting little fact I found to be stunning was that Claudius had intended to use war elephants in 43 AD to fight off the Briton war chariots. Unfortunately it is believed that the crossing was to rough when they were to be deployed and they never made it across.

Here is some info from the Aeroart site and I quote " When Claudius was proclaimed Emperor of Rome in 41 AD, he had no military experience. In 43 AD, to silence his critics on this perceived failing, Claudius decided to gain military glory by invading Britain.
Following the expedition of his predecessor Julius Caesar, Claudius readied four legions to accompany him: the IInd, IXth, XIVth and XXth. General Aulus Plautius would command the troops and as Julius Caesar did, Claudius took Roman war elephants with him on his British campaign.
The elephants were brought to Britain by boat, always a difficult task as elephants do not like this mode of travel. In the case of Julius Caesar, the elephant was a huge and frightening beast to the resident Celts and was effectively used by Caesar to create fear. While it is known that Claudius brought elephants with him to Britain, the records of their role in the conquest have not survived".
They actually make one a fine representation of one of Claudius's War Elephants for the same sum of $1600.00 you can also get Claudius for $165.00 .

They also make a FANTASTIC Celt Chariot w/Three Figures for $1100.00 bucks which is awesome I have had it in my sites for a long time now but just can't pull the trigger .

With First legions move into The Glory of Rome I'm hoping they will produce one down the road which will be very nice and more affordable for me :wink2:. I'm really getting excited about this new line and all the possibilities {sm4} . I have been putting money away waiting for the pre-order to start . Regards Gebhard

I know what you mean, I can't wait for this pre-order to start. Hopefully we will hear something this week. I saw the Aeroart Elephant as well but thats alot of money. I would be a dead man if I brought that home and my wife found out how much that actually cost. I'll have to check out the chariot you mentioned. I don't recall what that one looks like.

The tribes from Briton were by far the most notable for using the chariot (Karros) effectively, however there were also some Gallic tribes such as the Belgae, Brythonic and Goidels (These tribes were in Briton as well). Keep in mind that there were others that utilized the chariot as well but I kept to the general vicinity that you mentioned because the further you reached out from this region the more the design began to change. When buying a Boudicca figure be careful if your looking for historical accuracy because many times she is portrayed in a Roman Chariot. A great example of this is the statue of Boudicca in London on the Thames embankment. That is a Roman style chariot.

Thank you sir, that is what I was wondering. I only mentioned those specific areas as that seems to be where First Legion will start out with Rome's enemies.

Again, just to clarify my position:

- This legion would be fine, imo, to work for Britain though you would not want the Vexillifer (as Matt stated himself) as this particular figure works for 1 Minerva- a Legion that didn't exist at the time of the British revolts. For all intents and purposes, these legionaires can work for any time period between Caesar's Gaul campaigns through Hadrian- a period of 250 years.

The nice thing that he is doing is that it appears to be offering all three forms of armor- lorica segmentata, hamata and squamata- most Roman armies recreated in miniature focus strictly on segmentata though the chaim mail (hamata) was used extensively too.

A chariot would be very nice though Sahara brings up a great point, the chariot would need to look less Roman. Also, these things were used but not that extensively given the difficulty of the terrain and the fact that few armies tried to face the Romans in the open (where the legion was most effective). A British chariot would be really cool though.

I do not know much about this period, but the Celtic chariots were not like this picture??^&confuse

Hopefully this picture came through. There wasn't a whole lot to the Briton war chariot. They needed something small, fast and open ended so the warrior could hop out and hop back in really fast. Instead of targeting the driver or the warrior in the back the Romans would often target the horses that pulled it. Kill or injure one of the horses and the chariot is immobilized. The Romans could thus close on the warriors.

Hello my friend Gebhard

Actually it's much like the photo posted by Sahara{sm3}

That is a great looking piece! But for $1100 I can buy alot of FL Romans to fill in my Roman line^&grin

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't all three types of armor used fairly simultaneously? I had read it would have been very uncommon to have a unit with exclusively one type of armor.

You are correct- the point being that it seems like, in Hollywood movies or toy soldier renditions of Legionaires, they are all in Segmentata- like 90% or more of the time. I believe that FL is showing them in many different armor and helmet types makes it far more authentic than anything being offered in the past.

I'm glad you brought up helmets as well. A few years back, I painted a group of Pegaso Models vignettes which dealt with the battle in the Teutoburg Forest. I painted all the Roman helmets with silver. I wish I would have researched more and done a couple in bronze!

Hi Chris ,
Your statement really sums up one of the First legion slogans that is in every newsletter "As we like to say, you can collect toys or you can collect history, the choice is yours! " The amount of research that goes into producing First legion is a step above , and its refreshing to see that its not in vain :wink2:. With each new range more and more collectors are being drawn to First legion and I think there are a lot of guys who have been waiting for someone to produce Rome and her enemies at this level . Its gonna be a long and interesting ride watching this line develop ^&cool .. Regards Gebhard

Well Noah, you can still repaint those can't you? Blimey, I even have some of my FL figures modified if they don't fill all my needs. Of course, it is not because they are not correct, just because I may want a pose that they haven't covered yet for that series.

Bill, you are right, I could do a repaint on one or two of them. It has been a while since I broke out the paints, but I might have to give it a shot. I was more lamenting the fact that I should I done my homework before painting the first time!

2 days left in April. I wonder what the chances are of seeing the pre-order before May 1st.

Darn, doesn't look like those Romans are gonna be availabe as scheduled. I was hoping the pre-order would be on schedule as indicated by the end of April. Oh well maybe that means we will see them May 1st or 2nd {sm4}

Seems we are about due for a large newsletter/annoucement any time now. You would think the 'official' launch of the Roman line will the be centerpiece of the next newsletter.

I think I will be throwing my hat into the ring for Romans, it has been a tough choice between DAK and the Roman line, and for me to pass on WWII for anything is hard but time to exspand my horizons I guess, I know very little about the battles of the Empire of Rome except for the general basics, so I'm looking forward to buying some books on the complete subject, can't collect the line if I don't know the history of it:)... so looking forward to the pre-order, I do hope this line will be as exciting as my WWII line is...Sammy

Great to hear Sammy :wink2:,
I have a strong feeling this will also be my number two line . I'm really wondering what the other two lines will be that are still to come this year ^&confuse . It's getting to the point of and I hate to say it too much of a good thing . I'm hoping with the expansion into more ranges the pace of releases will slow a bit leaving me able to keep up .
The Glory of Rome has certainly got me fired up ^&grin .. its cool that the quality of First Legion's products has been able to get you interested in learning about another period . Like most life long History nuts i find my interest in different periods goes in cycles with some new things coming in from time to time .. I can't wait to see this line develop .. Regards Gebhard
