The Glory of Rome (5 Viewers)

Forgive me - I think I read somewhere (but can't now find) on the forum that the new Roman series is to be 60mm and not the normal 54mm for FL. Is this correct or am I ..........? The FL website is showing them as 54mm. These are to be my first FL figures and I'm so looking forward to them. Would value any advice. Thanks

I could be wrong but I think all First Legion products are listed as 54mm on the site but are actually 60mm.

That is confusing. So far, all the FL figures in the different lines have been the same size. I believe Matt has said this one will be no different. I have meaured my Napoleonics extensively and they are true 60 mm (+/- 1.5 mm) in height and the weapons measure correctly at a 1/30 scale. There is also a scale section with photo comparisons on the FL site.

http://www.firstlegionltd.com/scale.aspx

This statement from that section may add some clarification: As with all of our figure ranges, though we label it as "54mm", our ACW range is actually a true 1/30th scale figure range with figures averaging about 60mm tall.

For comparison, they are also the same height as the Britains Napoleonics and the Conte Romans and Barbarians and there are many photo comparisons on this site, including some of mine. I hope that helps.

Just out of curiosity, what do the boxes and packaging look like for FL products? The Romans will be my 1st FL pieces so I really don't know what to expect.

I don't have a camera handy but they come in appropriately sized stiff cardboard boxes with foam and foam cutouts. It is rare for me now to have any damage and when in the past I did, it was quickly replaced. The boxes typically come with a nice art cover photo representative of the period.

Here is a quick shot of one of the boxes from the AWI range:

As Bill said, it is very rare for the contents to have damage to them. The foam inserts do a great job of insulating the figures.

Thanks for the photo and info guys. I'm glad to hear that it sounds like its a rarity to receive a damaged figure. I like the art work on the AWI box hopefully that continues with the Roman line.

A bit early for this, but I would love to see some gladiators at some point...

not me, no offense. I just never got into the "gladiatorial" aspect of Rome. They might do it, though from watching Conte and St. Pete gladiators still collect dust, not sure it is a wise move. Would make for a nice dio though- FL Gladiators, St. Pete Roman citizens and JG Miniatures arena pieces.......

Yes, that's a fine idea, but let us get the legions and barbarians first^&grin...

Regarding the barbarians, does anyone know if FL will be focusing only on the Germanic tribes, or will they perhaps be venturing into the realms of various other enemies of Rome? Nothing wrong w/ the Germanic tribes btw, (I'm fascinated by all barbarians) just curious to know if this has been spoken of. My apologies if this is already common knowledge

And thank you all who posted packaging pics and information. That is very helpful.

Good morning Joe

I Minervia put in work in Parthia so persians/Parthians could be an option- absolutely. Now, does that mean they will produce- I do not know- my interpretation of the information provided on the website leads me to believe that this range will begin in Dacia which will leave us with traditional "barbarian" tribes.

Comparing the Conte latest releases with the FL releases- Conte is going more for a northern look as his legionaires are wearing the feminalia undershirts and such which was adapted for colder climates (if you watch The Legion, you will see those guys wearing that sort of thing in Caladonia (Scotland)). Given that these FL figures do not appear in feminalia, allows the collector the versatility of placing them anywhere really. KC's Romans wore the feminalia as well.

I think that FL will focus also on Briton Celtics and others tribes beyond Adrian’s Wall, -Picts for example.

Hi Chris! Thanks for the info-very helpful indeed. Sounds like the versatility of the Romans FL are focusing on will allow for a wide pool of combatants to choose from. I am quite intrigued. I'm sure whatever they do will be quite nice. You mentioned Conte has something in the works along these lines as well, which reminds of the old Conte Romans and "Barbarians". I still have several of those early sets and a little shelf dedicated to them. They really are a lot of fun! With that being said, I'm much more excited about FL's announcement to head down the Roman road and all that entails. Pretty exciting stuff! Thanks again for the response.

Funny you should mention the Conte ones; I have a fair number of those sets too, picked up at good value with the clearance sales they had on Ebay. I haven't seen any of the new ones in person but they have just released that one two piece set right? FWIW, size wise, my FL figures fit the old Conte Romans and Barbs.

Thanks for the info Bill regarding how your FL figures fit size wise w/ the old Conte Romans and Barbs. You are correct, so far Conte has only released the one set called "Winter Games" I believe, but apparently there are many more in the works. But when they'll see the light of day is anyone's guess. In contrast, I like FL's tight scheduling and how they let you know when a pre-order is coming in advance, and then they let you know when the actually shipping of orders will commence. I hope they do a version of Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni. Aeroart had a stunning version of their mounted Boudicca at the Westcoaster that I spent a lot of time marveling at. Being that she was one of their mounted figures, she was quite expensive. Someone did by her though. It would be great if FL made a Boudicca figure as well as other Celts. There are just so many possibilities. Here's a pic I took of the Boudicca Thor had at the Westcoaster:

Here's a pic I wouldn't mind seeing FL base their Boudicca from, if they were to produce Boudicca, of course:
