They do indeed look better with each viewing, which is not uncommon for FL.^&grin I assume Matt will answer on the shields but given that ALL the Crusader line shields are hand painted I would take odds these are as well.

The shields look nice to me. The only thing I found different is the way the Pilum is positioned, behind the shield...I never seen the Pilum on the position in any Roman Formation

Hey debrito

that is a good point. Not sure the historical/archaeological or even reenactor records suports this either. Most of the images that hae survived through time show them marching with their pilum much like a soldier does today with a rifle.

I would venture to say however that it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility though. The pilum were typically launched against charging foes or simply a strong, mid range weapon. By the time the Romans closed with their foes, the pilum had already been thrown (usually, the pilum could still be used as a melee weapon). I have to think the way the figure is shown, that if he took a hard hit to the shield, the spearhead would bust his face up- not pretty!! ^&grin I envision these legionaires to be part of a group of reserve troops coming into the battle or marching into battle right before things get really ugly or nasty.

I'm surprised the figure with the pilum behind the shield is generating a bit of discussion about it. The figure has two pilums (pilum?) and is going to throw the one in his right hand then take the one from his left which he is holding in his shield hand and throw that one too. Normally, he wouldn't carry it in his shield hand, but as he has two of them, he can't throw either if they're both in his right hand!

As for the shields, the photos shown are the masters and the shields are hand painted. For the production, we're looking at more cost effective alternatives to hand painting to keep the pricing out of the stratosphere. Our crusades shields are hand done, but these are far more complex.

Best,

Matt

Phew! April is finally here. Now the problem is waiting till the end of the month just to make the pre-order. Can't come soon enough!

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the first of these as well it's been a while in the making :smile2: but with quotes like this one from the last newsletter
"The range will launch with the first pre-order in April and we will keep up a continuous production about every 45-60 days until we’ve released the first 50 or so figures by the end of 2011.
With 50 figures coming by the end of the year ( And I'm guessing the first group release will be in the double digits )
I'm just putting some Hobby Money on the side :wink2:
And how about this one........:salute::

" This range isn’t about single figures, but like all of our ranges, it’s about full battle dioramas of unsurpassed variety and quality. Go big or go home as we like to say! "

I'm guessing First Legion are planning more then just figures by years end , which means I gonna need plenty of funds :salute:: .. Regards Gebhard

This series will be my first FL. An amazing commitment to produce 50 figures by end 2011! Does anyone know who the "enemy" will be if there is to be one. Forgive me if this has already been given on the thread.

Hello Breslau ,
I would highly recommend that you visit the First legion website and sign up for the newsletters ,they are free and are by far the best source for all things relating to First legion .

I have a feeling this new line is gonna unbelievable, I'm not sure what you are currently collecting but as of late you have been checking out the Photo's from some of the Happy First legion collectors :wink2: and I think you like what you see. I love to see what some of these guys do with there collections just fantastic , if anything the Figures even look better in your hand .

To me First legion have created their own category they are not quite at the painting level of say Aeroart or Kolobob , and some of the other truly Connoisseur level figures but at 1/3 or less of the price they are a GREAT value for the money IMO . Of course there are many manufactures in the Matte category producing slightly cheaper figures and some are quite good . It all depends what you want to populate your collection with.
If your looking for something new and IMO refreshing you will be very Happy with what First Legion have to offer , and if you don't like em please PM me first I'm always looking to build my Armies with slightly used figures at a little bit of a discount :wink2:^&grin.

It's always fun to have some new guys to chat with and I'll be looking forward to your contributions to the First legion threads and hey with a name like Breslau you gotta be pretty cool right :smile2: . As you have already seen the talent level of some of the First Legion collectors is tremendous :salute:: there is a pretty good group of guys forming around our common interest in First Legion and some are quite knowledgeable even if we don't always see things the same way :wink2: its a cool place to visit ^&cool

FL can definitly pencil me in for any where between 80-100 of these Legio I Minervia Romans (over a period of time of course). Whats great about FL is that they may put out 50 figures and each one will be different. Same said for the enemy (Germans) that they are planning on marketing as well. I can't even imagine if FL does auxs, Cav, art, etc.... I wish I could resist but this is the line I have been waiting for and I will enjoy it to the fullest ^&grin.

I assume Matt will let us know the price but we should know soon in any event since he said they would be up for pre-order in a few weeks. I would expect them to price like the Crusaders.

I hope these are spaced out a bit. It would be easy to get behind otherwise with the pre-existing FL temptations, not to mention the ones I have had to resist.

I'm sure we have all seen the movie Gladiator and remember the opening Battle Scene which would be awesome to be able to recreate using First Legion. Give this a look... its a pretty neat and creative recreation of that Battle . I found myself laughing out loud ^&grin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IetQCEzD5Xk&feature=related regards Gebhard

Ah yes, Playmobils . . . I have had lots of fun with Playmobils with my children and my grandchildren when they were younger. Pirates, Vikings, Knights, U.S. Cavalry - many hours of enjoyment. In fact, what is now my 4' x 8' ACW/AWI diorama table used to be the Playmobil table for my grandchildren before they out grew it.. Certainly neat stuff . . .

I can hear the Grandkids yelling now .....WHEN CAN WE GO TO POP"S HOUSE He has the best TOYS :wink2: Regards Gebhard

Just a personal thing I am sure, but for me I am not a fan of square shape bases for figures, just seems to make them display statues, so very happy to see these Romans are not following suit. Will be ordering at the end of April with the rest of you. cheers, Robin.
