The Glory of Rome (2 Viewers)

Well I just have to say they look awesome, I thought FL would be be doing Rome. So FL will be getting most if not all of my soldier $$ this year. Between Crusades and now Rome I will have no money for anything else. So looks like FL rest of the year.

That's the way I feel right now (with a few exceptions...). This a great way to put out competition, surely unintended...^&grin.

I gotta think it would be (scorpio/ballista one in the same right?) as well as an onager- after all, they gotta have something in the Roman lineup to charge us $300 for!! ^&grin^&grin

Andanna- Congratulations on your citizenship!! %^V

I bet it´ll be a little more...:rolleyes2::tongue:

Hi, Chris,

The range is same size as our other ranges, basically true 1/30th or 60mm.

As for the Optio, we actually have two Optios ^&grin (and an Imaginifer,Vellixifer, Tribune, Centurion, Trumpeter, casualties, vignettes, etc. - we'll show all in good time!). The first release will be the Legionnaires and then we'll immediately follow up with the command type figures. After that, it's the Super Glorious, in the end totally triumphant, Ancient Germans (how's that Andanna?) :wink2:

Glad folks like the new range.

Best,

Matt

Looking forward to that Vellixifer!:p
On another note, have you guys stopped to think of the Roman Empire: 700 plus years, 7 centuries, it's a time span that roughly matches the one between the Middle Ages and...today! Can't remember any empire that lasted so long. What about their decisive influence in our civilization? Mind boggling and never ending TS possibilities.

It's actually much longer than that- Rome in the west went from approx 740 BC to 465 AD- That's a millenium. If you count Byzantium in there, it goes till Constantine X1 made his heroic stand against the Ottomans in 1453 AD.

Egypt is certainly longer however, as are some of the Chinese and Indian (Hindu) periods I believe.

do me a favor and give me an advance warning when you change your mind in 8 months and look to sell your FL Romans ^&grin:tongue:^&grin^&grin

These figures look most impressive. Very tempting. I've just seen "The Eagle" which has put me in the mood!

I can beat that:

1) I became American citizen
(The US apparently has real issues with Immigration laws)

2) Finally- FL gives us Germanic Warriors!!

Amazing! I am really an ignorant about this period (although there are Roman ruins all over my country...). But it really catches my imagination. Some interesting reading to do in the future. Any recommendations?

With all the excellent releases lately, you need the actual discipline of a Roman Legion not to commit to every released line … Great new releases Matt & the FL team … Alby

Hello Paulo-

welcome to the obsession that is Rome ^&grin You truly need to get out into your beautiful country and see the marvelous Roman history there and especially that in the country that neighbors you.

To recommend a list would be rather exhaustive, as there are many many different eras and topics out there. If Roman military history is your thing, I would grab the osprey books- men at arms series for the soldiers and then the Campaign books to give you a good introduction. I always recommend this forum to up and coming Roman fans:

http://www.romanarmytalk.com/

that's a great forum with guys who REALLY REALLY know Rome. There are book reviews and the like on that forum.

Cheers

Thank you very much for the above link Chris. I have it book marked just in case I decide to collect this brilliant looking range. My collecting impulses are often driven by COLOR - thus my infatuation with the AWI British in their red coats and the variety of colorin the militia clothing. The combination of red, gold, silver, brass, etal in the Glory of Rome range has the same attraction for me . . . . .

I have been spending a little bit of time this morning on historical web sites reading about and looking at examples of existing Roman Forts on the German frontier. Wow! There is a wealth of information on this subject and I did not realize how many frontier forts are still standing today - some completely restored. With the availablility of this info, it would not be to hard to construct a very realistic gateway/wall section as a backdrop for these FL Romans. Than again, perhaps FL will make some appropriate scenics for this purpose. Also, I know that JG Miniatures already has Roman fort sections available for purchase - is anybody familiar with these, and would the scale be appropriate for the FL figures?
:smile2: Mike

Hey Mike-

the JG fort would be historically and scale accurate for Hadrian's wall, Spain, some parts of Germany and Dacia- which is what these guys are posed to represent. The fort wouldn't be considered a "frontier" fort as those were mostly timber and reinforced earthworks- the JG set would be more of a very permanent settlement.

That being said- his frontier log fort could work in a pinch as could Jenkins monogahela fort- in fact, anything really representing a wood and timber fort would work A-OK. Even Britains Yorktowne redoubt with the trenches and the logs sticking out could work if they were raised and not flushed to the ground (you'd have to cover up the sandbags).

Here are some more links my friend:

www.vindolanda.com

http://www.kalkriese-varusschlacht.de/en/varusschlacht-information-2-2/

the pictures you have shown with the Redcoats on the march would be brilliant. The ACW mat wouldn't work so well :)

I'm planning on grabbing the Optio and Aquilifer first and then ranking up the Legionaires.

Thanks for the additioanl info and web sites. From what I read, Legion I Minerva had their permanent location at Bonna (Bonn). Would not that location have been a permanent/stone fort rather than a wooden and earth structure?
Mike

not only a permanent/stone fort but a large community. Very large community. It eventually became a retirement province for legionaires when they hung up their gladius.
