As the Battle of Gettysburg began along McPherson's Ridge, the Confederates began to gain the upper hand.

Davis' Brigade of the 2ndMS and 42MS along with the 55th NC flanked the Union line and took up positions along the railroad cut; at this point, the 6th WI, 95th NY and 84th NY (aka, the 14th Brooklyn) charged across the Chambersburg Pike and attacked the Confederates.........

Hand to hand fighting began along the railroad cut, Davis' men took a murderous fire from the Union infantry and many were shot down where they stood, others were soon taken prisoner............

To the west of the cut, the 147th NY supported by Halls battery supported the attack and held off Confederate troops trying to support Davis' troops............

At this point in the fighting, the rest of 1st Corps arrives on the field and there is a lull in the action.

Plenty more will follow on the 1st and the next two days as well...............

As always, nicely done George. It just so happens that I was at the Rail Road cut this morning on a guided tour of the Iron Brigade's activities on July 1, 1863. It was part of the scheduled events of W. Britian Model Soldier Symposium that was held at Gettysburg this weekend. A weekend at Gettysburg is always great . . . .

Thanks Mike, glad you like it and I'm glad you enjoyed your tour and trip to Gettysburg.................

Thanks for viewing and for your feedback, I appreciate it.....................

Superb George must be brilliant to actually see it in the flesh.

Thanks Wayne, glad you like it; I've been to Gettysburg more times than I can count, I always make a point of stopping at the railroad cut. I didn't do a very good job of depicting it in this one, it's more of a trench than a hill actually, a terrible spot to try to defend as it's too deep to use as a trench, it was a trap more than a defendable position................

A couple of historical errors as pointed out on anther forum where these pictures were posted; the 147th NY and Hall's battery had actually retreated before the 6th WI and 95th NY and 84th NY attacked the cut.

I had them on the field to expand the diorama to the west, probably should have extended the cut further and added more troops attacking it.

That said, I like the way this version came out despite the historical error on my part...............

Nice job, as always, with the layout , George. Quite like the layout of the ground. I think the cut is well depicted, certainly for the deeper section. The faceoff at pointblank range is great.^&cool -- Al

Thanks Al, glad you like the way it came out...........quite a charge that was by the Union troops from 1st Corps that day......

George

Beautiful lay-out. Have always wanted to depict the rail-cut fight in 54/60mm but considered it too big a sprawling scrap to construct. Looking at your superb display I now know I was right not to attempt it.

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the feedback, glad you like it, although I must say if you were to tackle this one, I know you'd do it supreme justice. Have to get the cut just right, which I am sure you would; it would be stunning in 54mm, that is for sure, the Troiani work on the subject is one of my favorites as well.......

Missed seeing this one George. Love the terrain with hills, fences downed by advancing troops, etc. So much detail to see, especially like the command group with horse holder and flags. Wonderful creation. Chris

Fantastic George, what a terrific scene. So well laid out as well. This would be my wife's dream set up, because I'd be quiet for hours playing with this!

Chris,
Glad you got to see it before it got bounced off the first page, never to see the light of day again. I appreciate your feedback as always and I like the way you pick up on the small details I add to my dioramas, thanks very much...........
