The Rio Olympics (1 Viewer)

Unfortunately the Australian swimmers not lived up to expectations. However I see the Chinese swimmer Sun Yang did not qualify for the 1500m so means he can't be beaten by Horton again.

Good to see Fiji win their first ever medal although they have always been brilliant at Rugby 7's.

I wouldn't call it Amateur athletes ^&grin mate it was good back in the day when Professionals couldn't compete

Understood, I try not to sweat the small stuff; countries have been using their professional athletes for years, it took the rest of the countries a bit of time to catch up. As long as I get to see the best of the best, I don't worry if they are amateurs or professionals...................

I think you're both right. There are a lot of professionals but a lot of amateurs as well. During the swimming NBC showed a lot of swimmers at the finish line who had not won but acted like they had and were incredibly happy: they had exceeded their personal best.

When you hear the announcers say "So and so is competing in her first Olympics, she's a Freshman at the University of Georgia" then she's an amateur.

When you see the swimmer from Hungary with the steroid freak husband who blows a gasket everytime she wins a medal, that's a professional athlete.

Nice to see our amateurs beating other countries professionals.

As far as the US basketball team; college kids were playing other teams professionals for years, so we sent the dream team and that was that.

That said the US mens team has had to very close calls so far and the US womens soccer team lost to Sweden?

How is that even possible; oh yeah, the Swedes hired the former US coach and they played a defensive style game, keeping it close and winning on a shoot out.

And sorry, as much as I like Soccer, that is the lamest way to settle a match, it comes down to which teams shooters will choke the most, like kicking the ball right at the goalie or worse yet, missing a net the size of a tractor trailer..............................

I have no issues the way Sweden played. Traditionally, they've been a good team. They deserved the win. In fact they should have won in the extra time as they were not offsides when they scored at the end of the game. US can complain all they want but Sweden was better.

As far as the shootout, those are the rules and they're not going to change and after 120 minutes, it's the best way to decide a match.

The U.S. goalie, Hope Solo, has no class after being beat and saying Sweeden played a cowards game. They adjusted to the U.S. style and the U.S. could not readjust. Thus they got beat. I do agree with George on important games play sudden death like hockey. Regular season shoot outs are fine but not big time games.
Not being a soccer player, I ask how can you NOT score on a shootout?
Gary

The answer is nerves. Also, the goalies are going to make one or two saves.

Agree mate long as they are drug-free I don't care who goes it is good to see the best up against the best.

As for soccer results we lost in a shootout as well but if after 120 minutes you can't score in that huge net they deserve to win/loose by a penalty shoot-out.

Classic line George

wonder if they share the passion ^&grin

What a haul that is, incredible.

The two stooges who do the afternoon drive sports talk radio show here in Boston were arguing about Phelps, one said he's a top 10 all time US athlete, the other guy said he's not even in the top 50.

The latter guy is totally and utterly clueless; then he said he hasn't watched two seconds of the Olympics...............it's beyond my comprehension that some of these guys get paid to talk sports on the radio.

Dallas looked pretty good last night Mike, off to a very good start..................

George...

you could argue that all day...

but I think they would both agree...

he is the most accomplished and decorated swimmer ever...

1st half was fun to watch...the second half...not so fun...

Dak looked really poised and sharp...

good to see Bryant can still leap on the foot injury...

their secondary and pass rush are suspect at best...

they will have to control the clock to win...

Been really enjoying the Olympics , Michael Phelps is incredible . Am so proud of team GB who are currently in third position , considering the size of this country compared to China, Russia , USA etc is a tremendous achievement. That lottery investment has paid off hugely for two Olympics on the trot now.

Some of the locals are quite bad sports I think as you don't see booing in the Olympics but in Rio they've been booing everyone. Still they are down in 23rd place so may be the Rio citizens have something to boo about

Myself I'm not convinced Golf should be an Olympic sport....but we just won Gold in it so I'd better not push the point! ^&grin

I think he's an incredible athlete, what a resume, I doubt anyone will top what he's done in swimming in my lifetime.

Don't worry about the second half as most of those guys will either be on special teams or asking you if I want fries with that in four weeks.

Game three of the preseason is always the most critical as teams play the starters the entire first half, then into the third quarter, I think the Patriots play the Giants in game three; oh goody, my favorite NFC team..............:rolleyes2::mad:

Bolt toyed with the rest of the field on his way to his third gold medal in the 100 meter final, he is something else. He just has another gear no one else has, he just glides along while the rest of the runners look like they are running in cement.

He's a special talent; these Olympics have been a lot of fun to watch between him and Phelps, still have a lot of track and field to go, plus men's and women's basketball, volleyball and beach volleyball among other sports.

What an incredible night at the Olympics. Eusain Bolt is a legend in his own lifetime and am so glad we saw him back in London . And big congratulations to team GB who took 5 Golds last night including Andy Murray who defended his Olympic title . For GB to take second place on the medal table ( even if its only for a while ) is a superb achievement.

Hello World,
Was initially a bit slow to warm to the Rio games but after Sunday, have changed mind, Andy Murray's war of attrition in the tennis final, the British in the gymnastics and cycling plus naturally the king, the master of the sprinters action Bolt himself.. Bolt demonstrates how to be a winner and also enjoy himself.
Will need to get an early night tonight -- the time difference between Scotland and Brazil causing me to have too many late nights.

Almost finished

Back to my normal TV program, soon ..

Gotta agree with that^&grin

Huge respect to USA athlete Abbey D'agostino today who stopped to help an injured athlete who fell in front of her. Her sportsmanship and compassion deserves it's own gold medal.
