The Water Diviner (2014) Drama | War - 26 December 2014 (Australia) (1 Viewer)

Looks to be a winner. A very interesting story line. -- Al

I'm just home from a preview viewing of this TOP AUSSIE movie, due to open next week.

Set in 1919 its the story of father heading to Turkey to discover his 3 son's bodies or burial place after the war, and following on with the exhumation and burial of the bodies of the diggers on the Gallipoli Peninsular.

The battle scenes are very realistic and the settings so well done, I was trying hard not to be fooled that it wasn't on thee exact site at Lone Pine, while the scenes of Istanbul brought back fond memories out or trip there in 2010.

Its a must for seeing the horrors of war, and its devastation on the families left behind, and what happened to a defeated country, Turkey, and its rise to nationhood.

AND following the movie we just had to visit the local Turkish Restaurant for diner, and a bottle of Aussie red wine :)

Not seen it yet but expect to in next couple of days.

Seems No 4 at Aussie Box office on Boxing Day after Hobbit, Night at Museum and Big Something 6 (animated anime type movie). Hope all those who saw those 3 have Diviner on their list as hoping this does well.

Just saw it today. Agree. Interesting to see some perspective from the Turkish side.

Even had me looking up the Greco-Turkish war of 1919-22 to see the background to the events in the movie.

Hope the movie gets some more international roles for the two main Turkish actors in the way that Last Samurai did for Ken Watanabe.

Will be interesting to know how it does in Turkey as the events shown just as significant to them as Australians. The Greco-Turkish War is their War of Independence.

Seems WD is the number one movie in Turkey at the moment, beating the Hobbit.

Read that at the Turkish premiere that Crowe got quite emotional at the standing ovation he got at end of the showing.

I'm reading Les Carlyon's 'Gallipoli' ay the moment, so this subject is very much on my mind. One thing that is most painful to read is of the extraordinary level of incompetence displayed by so many senior commanders. At worst they were quietly shuffled aside. YET - I read once that following that Greco-Turkish war, the surviving Greek soldiers (it was a disaster for Greece) hung many of the fool politicians that put them through it.

I will probably see the film next week.

I'm looking forward to the release here in the US. Looks like a powerful film!

Available 19 March 2015 in Australia. I've preordered it. Usually when the disc is released
so soon it won't be a wide International release in U.S. theaters. If at all.

It was my understanding opens in USA/UK just before ANZAC day 25 April. Expect to see Russell Crowe doing all the talk shows.

One of the financial backers is James Packer who paid De Nero/Di Caprio/Scorsese $70 million just to promote his Casinos. I would like to think he and Crowe and others behind it have the pull to get a decent cinema release. What happens after that depends upon how well it goes with early cinema audiences. Whilst it is obviously based on Australian events the story itself should have worldwide appeal. I would not classify it as a war movie but rather a drama based around some war times events.

Interesting to know Packers production company Ratpac (with Director Brett Ratner) also involved in producing American Sniper, Jersey Boys, The Judge and Lego Movie to name a few.

It deserves to get a run as was well made.
