August 9th 2003 – The highest temperature ever recorded in the United Kingdom 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) in Kent, England. It is the first time the United Kingdom has recorded a temperature over 100 °F (38 °C)

August 26th 1914 – World War I: During the retreat from Mons, the British II Corps commanded by General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien fought a vigorous and successful defensive action at Le Cateau.

General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien had a very full Army career to put it mildly :salute:: He was one of the few British Officers to survive the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879 during the Anglo Zulu War.
