This would never happen where I live... (1 Viewer)

yes Wayne...
that is considered assault here too...

in Texas...
you would get a good smack on the head before you got arrested...^&grin

I think NY has a new "liberal" mayor...

Mike, watching that makes me sick. I don't care what the current attitude is towards police that should not have gone unpunished. I read that one officer had a year on the job and the other was right out of the academy, still no excuse. These officers did not even tell their supervisors of the incident. They only found out after it was on the news.
If I was their boss I would do everything in my power to fire them. I actually blame the officers for letting this happen. The first intentional splash of water on them should have resulted in an immediate arrest and whatever force it took to effect that arrest. This type of in action will result in next time bricks will be thrown.
If something like this would have happened when I was on the job the full meaning of police brutality would have prevailed.

cop or citizen...
man or woman...
brown...white...black...
young or old...

doesn't matter...
you do that to anybody...
you should be arrested...

those guys made a bad showing...
they might as well quit...
no cop is gonna be sympathetic to that...
they don't have a future in law enforcement...

I read another article that said they were gonna go after the culprits clearly captured on video...
I hope the judge raps them DOUBLE HARD!
need to make an example of them to get a grip on things...

As someone who lived in NYC most of his life I can understand your comments.
Playing "devil's advocate", however, I don't know if it was worth escalating the situation.
Granted they need to be taught respect for our law enforcement but what would have happened
if they tried to arrest some of the participants. What would have happened if they called in
reinforcements and a riot broke out. Would it be worth it to potentially have injuries and
fatalities over this? There is a lot of animosity towards the police in urban areas where
racial profiling and police brutality are highlighted. I have seen both sides as
a volunteer teacher for inner city kids and living in the city.
I can now say that the NYC police department is the most diverse in our nation. They are making
a real effort to connect with the communities they work in and reach out to young people.
You have to understand the history of race relations and policing in the city to really judge the actions on
both sides.
I have always been a proponent of education to bring people out of poverty and become productive citizens.
I primarily teach and work with African americans and Latino kids many who have great potential if given
the right tools.

Not a "bleeding liberal" but a solution drive person. There are certainly times when stricter enforcement and punishment are needed and I don't
shy away from that, especially for violent crimes.

I heard about this earlier today, saw the video awhile ago.

Not sure what sickens/disgusts me more as the son of a former police officer; what these pieces of **** did to those officers or the reaction to it I am reading on various websites, comments like "I need to see the whole video...….. what really happened...…….., did the cops do something to set those people off,,,,,,,,,,,, where they just horsing around...………………., looks like innocent fun...…………..."...……..

Are you ****ting me or what?

Yeah, innocent fun, getting a bucket whipped at you and it hits you in the head; what if that officer turned around and it took his eye out?

Would that be innocent fun?

Man oh man.

Respect to anyone who's a police officer in this country; talk about no regard for them, no respect, no appreciation, what a thankless ****ing job.

Richard...

I respect your comment and agree with your attitude in helping those who deserve it...
I really do...
I'm a compassionate guy...
someone that is really trying to better themselves deserves help...

but I think this is one of those times where you make a stand...
even if someone gets hurt...
this behavior is not tolerable...
it's become a viral video and could set a dangerous precedent...

buckets of water today...
rocks tomorrow...
what's next?

it's just shocking to me the blatant disrespect towards someone that chooses a law enforcement career...
this is a slap to the agency...the city...the state and the country...
I'm ashamed that we have citizens that think they can get away with this...

I can only hope the judge that presides over these individuals when they are apprehended...
that he will make an example of them...
there should be consequences...

I agree with George...
people who criticize law enforcement...
should walk in their shoes before they condemn...
it's a tough dangerous job...

Have a friend who's a NYPD Lt, been a police officer since he was 21 out of college, called him a short while ago and asked him what he thought of what's going on.

His reply; "I have nothing to say other than this; two more years and I'm turning in my papers, taking my retirement, full benefits, adios to this job."

My dad was a Boston Police officer for 37 years. As a rookie, he was doing a detail at a Thanksgiving high school football game, the only officer there, two inner city schools, one mostly black, one mostly white, a riot broke out, my Dad was in a sea of humanity wailing away on pieces of garbage with his baton trying to restore order, got stabbed in the leg in the middle of it.

Maybe he should have been giving out hugs instead.

That would be the day someone, ANYONE threw a bucket of water on him and got away with it.

They'd regret the day they were born.

What I saw in those videos sickened me, disgusted me, made me want to vomit.

What a world we live in today.

Can't wait for this thread to get locked too in 3, 2, 1...……………………...

Gents if the thread turns deeply political or just plain stupid it will get locked if not then it will be allowed to remain. Thin line. Keep it sane and above board and all will be fine.

I am at a loss for words even being a "devils advocate" how any one can condone this under any circumstances. This type of incident can only happen in todays world where complete lack of respect for the police is in certain circles proper. I guarantee if those officers would have attempted to make an arrest and there was any sort of struggle guess who the blame would have fell on, the cops.
I'll say it again I blame those officers for lack of a better term, they were *******. They should have done what needed to be done and take any heat that followed.
I can say it because I walked the walk for 41 years and I know beyond a doubt what I would have done.

Water poured on cops in Harlem...

I can't understand this happening in NY yesterday...
it might happen here...
but after it did...
the results would not be the same...

Never is a BIG WORD. Never say never...and be always vigilant.

When my wife and I moved from LA to San Antonio we heard Texans says: "it will never happen here".

Yet, we saw signs everywhere that the CA culture was supplanting the culture here.

Since then, it has accelerated.

I have nothing but respect for police officers, and cannot even imagine acting that disrespectful to one. That was assault and should have resulted in an arrest. That being said, I for one, like Rich, am glad the police officer did not lose control and that nobody got hurt. Although if the police still used water canons, this would have been the time ...

Louis I know you respect police officers and I appreciate that. But let me ask you. In regards to no one hurt. Dig deep down into your soul and forget any form of PC. Didn't you wish those a-holes throwing the water took a night stick to the head? The reality of all his is if that happened I guarantee they wouldn't throw water on the police again. Not PC but the real truth.

Isn't that assaulting a Police officer! You would be arrested for that here in OZ.

Assaults like that against Police and similar occupations such as Paramedics, Nurses and Teachers are more common than you would think. And what about throwing an egg at the Prime Minister of Australia. The Female offender managed to hit the PM but the egg didn't break, just a graze. She recently received a 18 month community corrections order and will have to complete 150 hours community service. My point being that such offenders usually only receive a slap on the wrist, sad to see IMO.

Whoa, whoa......dont put words in my mouth because you disagree wit me.
I never said I condone the actions of the water throwers or anyone who attacks a police officer. What I'm saying is two fold.........

First, sometimes you have to pick your fights and anticipate the consequences. Yes, the videos should be studied and arrests made if possible.
But if the police pulled out their guns or tried to tackle the perpetrators it might have gotten worse. Would it be worth it to kill someone over this incidence?
If the police thought their lives were in danger, could not get away or were even threatened verbally then force could be justified but it should be a last resort.

Sure the police have a tough job, i have family in law enforcement. And I will agree that the vast majority of police do a good job and follow the laws. I also have
been both witness and victim of police brutality, and I never was a "gang banger". So I know what resentment feels like.....again I never condone violence against law enforcement.
I just try to understand the causes and how we can fix the problem with education, economics and yes punishment when necessary.

Second, I am a solution guy. We can blame, demonize and generalize about certain groups but that doesn't solve the problems. As a nation we lock up more people than any other country.
I took the opportunity to teach financial literacy and employment opportunities to inner city kids. Many, many have gone on to be business people, lawyers, law enforcement, health care workers,
etc. In 2015 I was NYC volunteer teacher of the year and now I teach the volunteer teachers. I know first hand that some of these minority kids are far gone and who knows how they will turn out.
But if we just complain and condemn nothing gets solved. We can't lock up everyone!
So be angry but also understand that there is a way to minimize this behavior through education, job training and mentoring.

That's all I can say.

Most people can be reasoned with, but a small minority of people only understand a night stick to the head. Not saying the water throwers deserved that. You really can't reason with everyone.

Absolutely Wayne mate, that would be considered assaulting a police officer down here in NZ too and they would have been rightfully arrested and charged for that type of behavior.

While I'm not comfortable criticizing the officers involved, the appropriate response would have been to lock those responsible up.

Sadly the inexperience and lack of confidence shown by the officers involved endangers them further.

This incident has little to do with politics and is more about supporting junior police officers and training them appropriately.

Gary,

I did mention I was cool with the police using water canons 😆 If you watch old films of police using water canons back in the 1950’s or 60’s, I think you’ll find we are on the same page.
