Robin's dio and Chris' comment got me thinking about the "bundles" that we see attached to the island-superstructure of IJN carriers. I had always assumed that they were some sort of flotation device for the crew were the vessel to be sunk. I was wrong. They were apparently futon mattresses that were lashed to the island to protect it from air attack. Interesting, and very Japanese.
