And to make a bad situation worse, reports are that one the two confirmed fatalities is a child.

An 8 year old.

I just heard this tragic news. What a horror.

The courage of the first responders is truly remarkable. As you said, George, clanking brass ones.

I thought I heard on the news that they had video of someone dropping a parcel or a bag in the exact area of the explosion...

I don't think any resources will be spared until they catch this guy...I hope it's just one individual...but it sounds too intricate for a solo job...

Hats off to the first responders, as always in these situations they show they are among the best we have to offer as a country .

Cowardly is not even adequate to describe those who commit these types of bombings. Just as these spree shooters always do, they attack the defenseless. Never those who can defend themselves.

I would assume they think this will cause some type of social breakdown in Boston, as the citizens hide in fear of possible future attacks. Truth is that those folks in Boston come from old blood that once stood up to the mightiest army in the world, face to face and man to man. This tragic attack will not cause them to hide in fear. An attack in the heart of their city, somebody will pay for that, and rightfully so.

My son went to pick up a friend stranded by the transport issues. Friends and relatives checking in by phone and on F.B. A co worker who's buddy was running in the marathon tweeted that he was OK.

So many good and life affirming events this weekend in this region and then this.

Sad day. This was a message event. Whoever did it wanted to maximize media coverage. So they have some kind of axe to grind. Wouldn't be surprised if it's some paranoid home grown type like the Atlanta bombing or McVeigh. Fortunately the explosive did not look that powerful or a whole lot more would have been hurt.

This kind of act is barbaric, coward, vile. No punishment given by Justice to the perpetrators of such horrific acts is fair enough... After watching several times the explosions on TV I also won't be surprised if this is the despicable work of some domestic nut group. Our hearts and prayers go to all those affected by this senseless act of violence.:redface2:

that's an old Army demolition tactic for maximum casualties isn't it...

the first explosion tricks the panicked fleeing traffic into the next explosion...

one trap after another...

that sounds really well thought out from a really sick mind...or practiced before (military)...

I am not sure rather this is domestic or international terrorism. It seems like to biggest thing to draw an attack today would be it being the 15th, tax day. I could see some nut bag anti tax group/individual doing this in the city where the Boston Tea Party took place in protest of taxes. Some kind of sick connection made in their mind.

Just makes me want to see this person or persons lined up and shot after a their due process and a guilty verdict. Not sure if they will face justice at the state level or federal level, I guess that will decide if the death penalty is play here. I think they deserve it myself.

The theory here is it's domestic for the reasons you've pointed out, plus international terrorists don't like to leave evidence behind, ie, the person planting the bomb usually goes bye bye with the bomb so the authorities can't connect the dots and trace it back to the source.

This is going federal for sure, the FBI will be getting involved and whoever did this will be found, too many cameras, cell phone cameras, videos being shot, etc, etc at that spot, the finish line.................

I just read about this tragedy today and i am shocked by such a murderous act! I hope they catch these mongrels but it will never bring back the innocents that were lost on that day.

Each and every incident like this takes my faith in humanity down several pegs, but then I hear of people who took runners in at their homes and clothed and fed them, I see how the first responders rushed in with no regard for their own safety to assist others and I feel a bit better.

Not much better, but a tiny bit.

And as if yesterday wasn't bad enough, last night when my girlfriend came home she told me her boss sent her to work in their Boston office yesterday, which is several blocks away from the finish line. She had planned to walk down to the finish line to watch some of the runners cross during her lunch break, but got a call that someone in her office was ill, so they needed her to return to her regular office.

The call came in about half an hour before the first bomb went off.

As the boy returned to his family, the bomb went off, killing him and severly wounding his mother and one of his sisters, the other sister is unharmed.

I certainly agree with your second paragraph except that a simple death penalty seems far to tame for someone who does something like this.

Personally I think it is most likely international. If domestic, I believe it has nothing to do with taxes. People who protest taxes generally just want to be left alone, not harm innocent bystanders with no connection to government. If it is domestic, it is more likely some psycho with no real cause other than the creation of terror.

Whatever it is, my deepest sympathy and prayers to all those affected.

I'm fairly sure Mass. doesn't have a death penalty, but there may be federal crimes. The FBI indicated that they were taking the lead in the investigation. Anyone notice how some runners finished the race and even checked their watches even after the explosion? Marathon runners take this stuff very seriously.

I think its easier for a country to immediately blame foreign terrorists for such action than it is to accept its a fellow country man able to do such deeds against their own. From what has been said so far or not said this looks like it could have been a inside job. It looks very sloppy and primitive compared to what happened elsewhere in the world when outside terror groups strike.

I was struck with what Combat has just posted watching bombs go of and people running here there and everywhere and some runners actually stopping their watches to get their time for the run after coming through the finish!!!

Watching the live news feed from Channel 4 in Boston yesterday I couldn't help thinking the world of the 2007 film Children of Men which was meant to be dystopian science fiction set in 2027 was already here as seen in this still from early in the film after Clive Owen has just left the crowded coffee cafe seen in the background.
