G. B. Farthing was an English Baptist missionary in Shansi province. He and his family were killed by the Boxers in 1900.

Note: How the family has "gone native" in their style of dress with the exception of the youngest child. This is very typical of photographs taken of Westerners living overseas during the 19th C Colonial Era. They are posed in front of a Chinese screen which may have been a studio prop.

Below is a photo of the English mission at Shanshi and next to that a telegram telling of the massacre of the missionaries by the Boxers including all 5 members of the Farthing family:

... Mission houses in Taiyuenfu (Taiyuan) burned, except Farthing’s. Missionaries fled there, escorted Yamen, promised safety, immediately massacred, altogether thirty-three Protestants, Pigotts 3, Duval, Robinson, Attwaters 2, Stokes 2, Simpsons 2, Lovetts 3, Coombs, Benyons 4, Wilsons 3, Farthings 5, Whitehouse 2, and four others. Hoddle, Underwoods, Stewart have not been mentioned; also ten Catholic priests. Others not known, Probable total, fifty-one foreigners, besides many natives. Hsi Cho (Xinzhou), six persons, escaped mountains horseback, probably Dixons, McCurrachs, Renaut, Ennals, fate unknown.
