Trophy - zulu war sets (2 Viewers)

I thought we would leave the other regiments who participated in Battle of Gingindlovu for another day and show some of the Mounted units that took part in the Invasion of Zululand

Here we have Lord Chelmsford and his Staff

Martyn,
Very nice sets indeed! First time I've seen the fallen IMI guys and their mounts behind the dismounted NMP under attack. Patiently waiting for more!
Mike

Thank you Martyn for taking the time to photgraph these beauties. It's a shame Trophy is no longer in business.

Many of the Trophy molds have been purchased and hopefully we will see some of these wonderful figures made available soon.

I heard that a lot were trashed (horrible condition) after Maison Militaire got them, we'll have to wait and see. They are my favorite!

I'm very happy to picture my sets and glad you all like them.

I will picture the Mule train with mountain gun next along with mules loaded with extra ammo.

I will also picture the pontoon sets in the next day or 2

Cheers

Once again Martyn thanks for the photos and what an outstanding collection you've acquired over the years. I noticed the Chapel that seems similar to Conte's along with the J G Miniature Drift Buildings in your cabinets. What a field day I'd have playing with the figures and sets. Looking forward once again to your next batch of photos......The Lt.

Hi Lt

Well spotted with the buildings in my poor quality pictures.

The Chapel and Storehouse are JG Miniatures 1991, the buildings, as you probably know, are based on the ones in the film “ZULU”. I am not sure who manufactured the other larger building but it is a pretty good copy of the Storehouse shown in contemporary photos.

I am doing my best in trying to track down my diorama pictures, they are here somewhere. I the meantime I have marked each shelf to show how I had it all displayed

Martyn,
What a cabinet you had! I love the layout and the themes, especially the pre-battle RD. The Mountain Artillery set is also fantastic. I've done some in-depth research and the past couple years on the RA in Zululand and can't find any reference to any 7 pdr screw guns or mountain type artillery units in-country during the war. Do you know of any units that are depicted by this wonderful Trophy set? Mike

Hi Mike

Glad you liked the pictures.

Interesting point you raise about the use of a Mountain Artillery piece being used during the Zulu War. I don’t believe there is any concrete evidence and with TROPHY making this set they could have been using artistic license, but never say never.:)

Here is a link to a very interesting site with a great deal of info regarding the Royal Artillery and their roll in the Zulu War

Martyn,
Believe it or not, I have that article, as well as numerous others from the SA Military History Society in a binder at home. This particular article, is a brief yet conclusive essay on the Arty guns. Until reading, I did not realize that they had 12pdrs, Armstrongs and 4pdr Krupps available in the districts. A must read for those interested in the AZW, and I mean the whole site! Mike

Here are some pictures of the pontoon sets.

Martyn,

I think they may be my favourite sets yet. :D :D :D I am hoping that Britains will do something similar in the future for the matte series.

Once again Martyn pulls some "stuff" out of his closet...and just knocks me off me feet. Thought I was doing a good job compiling a list of Trophy Zulu sets, then these sets come along. Lt. posted a set he had acquired but that one is different then these two. How many pont sets did Taylor put out? Mike

Hi Mike and thebritfarmer

Glad you like the Pontoon sets, thought you might. :)

Trophy produced two Pontoon sets.

The unloading set is the same as Lt, the only difference is the wagon is painted grey and the helmets are “tea stained”.

Now I will tell you a story.;)

When I started to really get into collecting I asked Len at Trophy if I could have all of the woodwork of my wagons and ordnance painted grey, this appeared to be the standard colour of equipment used during the AZW according to contemporary paintings and pictures. Len agreed to do this for me and that is why my sets are painted grey.

But saying that, if you look carefully at the Pontoon wagon arriving at camp you will notice that the ramp in position under the wagon bed is green, this was going to be repainted grey but I never got around to it.

Cheers

Martyn
