Trophy - zulu war sets (1 Viewer)

Thank you Martyn, Mike and Joe. I have become fascinated with the Naval Brigade and you answers and pictures are most helpful. I appreciate all your expertise.

Randy

Excellent info Mike and Joe, many thanks

I knew you two aficionados were more than likely to have the answer.

Now that I have started the new Invasion of Zululand I am going to invest in the Osprey books

Cheers all:)

Martyn

Here are 2 photos of the Naval Brigade in Zululand in 1879 and a plate showing Naval Brigade uniforms in the Zulu War

Randy,
Thanks for posting. The Gatling crew from Tenedos (I beleive) is an excellent quality picture. I can take my calipers out and measure the barrels at .650 diameter:D

Had a good hunch Randy that you'd do a little more hunting and once again you've bagged your prey. Thought I'd add the Coulor plates by the late Richard Scollins from Ospreys British Forces From Zululand by Ian Knight I talked about earlier to provide another aspect of the coloured uniforms and better than the photos I sent to you last night. Mike I'm sure enjoy the photo of the rocket launcher....The Lt.

Lt.,
I"ve studied that colour plate on more than one occasion. I still can not figure out what the rating (from the HMS Shah) is doing. Is he lighting a pipe to smoke? Is he preparing to be burned to a crisp by the 24pdr going of in front of him, or is he just adjusting his neckerchief? Please satisfy my intense curiosity by explaining what he's doing, or someone else's take on it.
Mike

NEW SOUTH WALES NAVAL BRIGADE, 1900
N.S.W. first formed its Naval Brigade in 1861. Then in 1900 N.S.W. and Victoria sent naval Brigade contingents to China to help quell the Boxer Rebellion. This rating is fully equipped for that expedition. In 1901, Australia became a Commonwealth and Naval Forces came under Federal control.

Thats a healthy and blood thirsty looking bunch of Zulus you have there Martyn. The 24th Foot best watch out !! :) :D

Martyn,
We are continually amazed at what you pull out of your hat! I love these guys, especially the ubidi that I have never seen before. Was he the boy that got too close to the British square at Gingindlovu and was captured and went into the Royal Navy after?:D
Lovely... Now you simply must associate Part#s to these sets so we know what to look for in the middle of the night, while you're sleeping, and all the lights are off...

That’s the one;)

Apparently a Zulu boy (mat carrier) got too close to the British line and was grabbed by a sailor from HMS Boadicea and kept captive throught the battle. He was adopted as a mascot by the crew.

Cheers

Martyn:)
