Trophy - zulu war sets (1 Viewer)

Martyn,
Yes indeed Father Christmas was good and early! I still have not seen those Naval Brigade teams, and they are highly desirable:rolleyes:;). Sounds like the London show was a boon for you! Who had the sets, a dealer, or private seller? Can't wait for pictures after you're rested up.
Mike

I see you struck gold again Martyn and noticed you pick up a group of figures from Trophy's Winners of The Victoria Cross along with No Quaters Given. I'm sure you couldn't wait to get home to releive them from their boxes. Look forward to the photos.............The Lt.

As promised here are the Naval Brigade sets I purchased at the London Toy Soldier Fair yesterday (6th December)

Hi Mike

Found the sets from a private collector who was selling of individual pieces from his collection. He had attended several of the previous London Fairs and was down to his last Trophy, fortunately for me he had not brought any of the sets I purchased to the previous Shows and that is why I managed to grab them:D

Hi Joe

I sure was lucky, I managed to find 8 sets from my wants list plus the 2 Naval Brigade sets.

Now how about this, my wife is buying the WBritains Rorkes Drift Storehouse for me as a Christmas present.

Cheers

Martyn,
Great finds and additions to your collection! Even a "Scout Reports" and some other hand to hand beauties. I did notice the rating drinking from canteen...a very unique version of the usual (but lovely) soldier in shirtssleeves drinking.
And the NB sets themselves!!?! Major, significant finds I must say!
Glad to hear your better half is on-board with the hobby! Less stressful! Say hello to Her for us!
Mike

Lovely sets.
Is that canteen service issue or is it perhaps a specially purchased canteen with some restorative liquid in it.

Hi Martyn,

Wow! What wonderful additions to your collection! I love all your new figures, but the Naval Brigades sets are something special! Thanks for sharing your figures with us.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Happy Sunday Martyn,

First off thanks for the photos and once again there's no doubt in my mind that the little kid in you was one happy one as you started setting them up to be photograph. I noticed you ended up with three of my last set of figures I received from Len. Chard and the two hand to hand sets which are fun to play with. What a thoughtful Mrs. you have and your one lucky Brit having her for a wife. Starting with the mealie bags from Britain you purchased yesterday the Hosptial which will be found under your Christmas Tree I can just see what's in store to be added to them from WBritain. Once again Martyn thanks for sharing your new found treasures.......Joe

Hi Joe, Pat, Mike and Damian

Very pleased that you liked the sets.

Many thanks for all your kind comments

Cheers

Great new sets!

A question on 19th C (1870s-1900) RN uniforms:

For the sailors were these all possible combos?

blue pants--blue top
blue pants-white top
white pants-blue top (1st time I saw this is in your new set above)
white pants-white top

Collars: plain white or plain blue or a lighter blue with stripes?

leggings: khaki/tan or black?

webbing and ammo pouches: brown, black, white?

Sennet hats--why do some have brim down while others are up?

I am painting a set of Armies In Plastic RN from the Zulu war and want to be as accurate as possible. The AIP sets come with sennet hats with brims either up or down. Crowns on sennet hats differ too--some soft & round--others more hard-edged and oval

I'm confused since there seems to be quite a variety out there.

Thanks,

Randy

Hi Randy

Very interesting question.

I read somewhere that the Naval Brigade seaman’s standard uniform comprised blue and/or white top, blue and/or white trousers, black or khaki leggings, sennet hats or white caps. The Officers sometimes had their Foreign Service helmets dyed blue. I believe all of the uniform items you mention would have been worn at one time or another in various combinations.

Regards the colour of the equipment, ammo pouches etc, I believe that was black or brown.

I am not sure as to the correct, if there was one, position of the brim of the sennet hat

Let’s open your question out to other Forum members and see what answers we get.

Cheers

Martyn

PS I have just discovered this book on the subject

“NAVAL BRIGADE IN SOUTH AFRICA DURING THE YEARS 1877-78-79”
Author: FLEET SURGEON Henry F. Norbury
ISBN: 9781843429203

I don’t have a copy but it could answer your questions;)

Marty & Randy,
That book is more a narrative of the Landing Party from the Active from late 77 frontier uprising to the Zulu mid-period. The best book is probably the good-old Osprey Series British Uniforms of the Zulu War.
By the way, both of you are correct in uniforms. It was usual that each HM ship had different uniforms. For example members of the HMS Shah had blue tops and bottoms and were the only ones to wear sennet hats with the ship name on a blue band.
HMS Tenedos had Blue everything and blue caps
HMS Active had white over blue with black neckerchiefs with white caps
HMS Boadicea had all white with a blue neckerchiefs with blue caps
All had brown leather belts withe canvas legging

Hi Randy, Mike and Martyn just finished sending Randy some poorly take photos from Osprey Elite Series BRITISH FORCES IN ZULULAND 1879 which should answer Randys question and need to wait til the AM to take a better photo or two and if needed Randy I'll send it or them along if they come out better......The Lt.

Thank you Martyn, Mike and Joe. I have become fascinated with the Naval Brigade and you answers and pictures are most helpful. I appreciate all your expertise.
