From a review I saw on the beeb Wayne it sounds like a tear jerker with some Spielberg quality War
scenes thrown in, think I've convinced the wife we should see it over this holiday.

Been looking forward to this one hope its as good as the hype, like a good war movie that's a tear jerkier..........................:D

I hate to spoil it for others but does the horse die after capturing the kaiser?

No, he becomes the first president of the Weimar Republic.

I'm in two minds about seeing it now at the movies as the several reviews I have seen are average - IMDB has it at 6.8/10.

Might wait until it's out on DVD.

If the English Patient is a war movie, I'm a Hungarian peasant. Just because a movie takes place during war time doesn't make it a war movie.

I saw War Horse the play on Broadway. A great tale. Hundreds of thousands of horses died in the first world war. Many thousands were English horses. This pays homage to their sacrifice.

Horses are not capable of self sacrifice, only to be sacrificed and are not aware of what nationality they belong to. This is entirely human sentimentality and guilt after the fact for using large beautiful animals that do show some intelligence and empathy but must be trained to be useful. Cattle that are eaten and turned into boots and belts get not such sympathy.

In a collective sense, the sacrifice was by the horse owners, horse lovers and horse people. While horses did not know or understand the risks of their service, we presume, they served their masters nobly, with honor and courage, at least as presented in this story. Whenever a beast, such as the dogs we employ in military or police service, pays the ultimate price doing their duty, it is viewed as an act worthy of honoring, whether or not the animal was conscious of the sacrifice made.

People will sob incessantly when their pet dies while offering no such sentiment for the fried chicken on their plate. Perhaps next time you witness a child in such despair you can remind him/her of the terrible inconsistency. No doubt the parents will appreciate your input....

Hahah! I'm thinking of the WW II era Popeye cartoon where his nephews try to sneak a horse into the house disguised as "The Painter". The horse's backside is done up to look like Hitler.

I saw the movie today and really enjoyed it. Great action scenes! Great story. Storming of the trenches in the movie reminded me so much of the opening combat scenes in Saving Private Ryan. The cavalry charge was something to behold. I will say that I am not as critical as some of you guys are on movies. It was the best movie I have seen this year.

Come on Darrell, we can't go by the opinion of someone who actually saw the movie. :wink2:

(Thank you.)

THis was a play? With live horses?

It was a play. But there were no live horses. Large puppets, for lack of a better term, were used to simulate the horses. The puppeters operated from inside a horses' shell. They intimated the movements and sounds of a horse, both small and large, very well. It was quite amazing now real the (puppet) horses seemed.

I believe the play won some awards. It first showed in London.

Well Scott- where DO you find these things?^&grin

Caught this one today with my Dad; just brilliant, never had 2 and 1/2 hours fly by so fast in my life.................theatre was crowded for a Wednesday 11:30am show...................what a terrific movie is all I can say, Spielberg is an outstanding director, the uniforms and equipment were spot on IMO, the action scenes were very good, but not over the top, which will appeal to a wider audience.

Can't say enough good things about this movie..................my only complaint was the theatre was awfully dusty, a lot of dust flying around in the theatre specifically when the boy and horse are reunited in the field hospital...........:wink2:
