War Horse Movie ? (2 Viewers)

Caught this one today with my Dad; just brilliant, never had 2 and 1/2 hours fly by so fast in my life.................theatre was crowded for a Wednesday 11:30am show...................what a terrific movie is all I can say, Spielberg is an outstanding director, the uniforms and equipment were spot on IMO, the action scenes were very good, but not over the top, which will appeal to a wider audience.

Can't say enough good things about this movie..................my only complaint was the theatre was awfully dusty, a lot of dust flying around in the theatre specifically when the boy and horse are reunited in the field hospital...........:wink2:

All that dust must have made your eyes kinda watery, huh George. I get that way when I watch Home Alone.:wink2::tongue:

Darrell , I agree on all accounts . The horses passing through the machine guns without a single rider left was chilling

Also best movie this year, but saw it on Jan 3 :)

I saw the movie today and really enjoyed it. Great action scenes! Great story. Storming of the trenches in the movie reminded me so much of the opening combat scenes in Saving Private Ryan. The cavalry charge was something to behold. I will say that I am not as critical as some of you guys are on movies. It was the best movie I have seen this year.

Yes, all of that dust made my eyes watery, that's for sure, the ending was a punch to the chops too, more dust flying then as well................this movie makes my top ten all time.

My 11 year old daughter "Queen" Victoria and I read the story in anticipation of the movie release and saw it on Dec. 26th. My wife and her were covered in "dust"...must have been a remodeling period{sm4}

<<<<spoiler alert!!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

First off, THIS AINT A KIDS MOVIE- This aint Black Beauty- you can take your kids but be aware of what upsets them- I told my daughter to turn away on many occasions.

I think Speilberg's less is more approached worked brilliantly here- this is a very touching story set in WW1. The scene with Topthorn lying in the mud dead with his bit still in his mouth as well as Cpt Nichols charge were easily some of the most poignant and visually powerful scences in any movie I have ever seen.

The book did differ quite a bit from what was on film- the death of topthorn was really drawn out in the book and leaves your heart aching- my daughter couldnt finish reading the chapter and was crying quite a bit. The chapters dealing with the girl and her grandfather were cut short and especially the ending- the ending of the book shook me harder than the movie (though the movie's ending is very well done indeed).

Some of you guys do make some legit points regarding horses- I never really used to think of them as anything more than animals till my daughter came into my life and taught me the error of my ways. Cows and chickens are accepted as being killed in mans pursuit to feed himself- these horses in military service served with very honorable distinction- obviously they have no notion of a country or things like democracy but they still charged head first into a hail of bullets without flinching.

So, was it a worthwhile film?? That question was answered for me before I was even asked it when my daughter approached me a few days after we saw the movie and said "Dad, I was looking at that really old picture you keep in your desk- wasn't one of those men in WW1??" "Yes, Victoria that would be your great great grandfather Carelli- about 2 years off the boat from Calabria Italy". The movie has spurned her forward to read and learn more about our families involvement in WW1 and the war in general- to me, that's a huge "Worth-it"

What is that quote...

"They also serve who only stand and wait"

I firmly belive this is written with Military horses in mind.

It was really John Milton on going blind but trying to be useful. Might be good for police, firefighters, etc. waiting for the phone ring.:)

Hurry up and WAIT!{sm0}

^&grin^&grin

But yeah, that is one very good thing about this kind of film- it brings history to the public{bravo}}.

Just got back from War Horse We really liked it! Nice "hommage" to William Cameron Menzies and GWTW in the final scene. Sunset and a stark sound stage outdoor hillside.

Son and I saw this one yesterday and neither of us really cared for it. A Disneyesque treatment of war, not a drop of blood or wounding during the battle scenes, so it's okay for children, except for the very young. Not a believeable storyline and the horse training scenes were laughable. Chris
