WB's New WWI Tommies & Downton Abbey (1 Viewer)

Randy, I don't need any more temptations and your wonderful thread posted here with photos featuring WB Tommies and Downtown Abbey is not helping. I am seriously thinking about collecting the WWI range . . . . it just keeps getting better and better and it certainly appears that WB is committed to providing the collector a wonderful range that will be supported and expanded upon.
:smile2: Mike

Mike you won't be disapointed they look great, it does look like Britains aregoing to set up a great series & expand it the way they have with the Zulu, ACW & now the War on the Nile series!
& I think the 1914 aniversary coming up in a few years is gona take it to an even higher level!

Craig

They are cool arnt they Rob? Its almost enough to make me ditch glossy WW1 for them! Most of them should be released in May & June mate.

Craig

Craig

As Konrad has shown with his matte John Jenkins and Britains figures these could all be nicely glossed. :)

Randy, yes they would all look good glossed up but I think I'd like to keep them matte! I've never really given the matte WW1 a chance & now I've had time to poor over the new releases I quiet like the grittiness of the matte look!

Nice Randy, how did you find that? I was wondering if we was going to see some specials from the different shops?

Craig

I like the ammo carrier , you can feel his weariness as he trudges through the mud .

Well Randy if I was not already collecting WW1, after your input, I could not resist. You are a credit to Britain's marketing team. So glad you are on board with this era, you are good for inspiration. Thanks for posting all these images. Cheers, Robin.

My dream is to get WB to do some Downton Abbey related items. With millions of fans worldwide and 1000s of tourists visiting Highclere castle where DA is filmed it would be a great seller IMHO:)

These new figures show that Britains are really committed to the middle-late stages of WWI. A German MG team would be nice at some stage. If Britiains can mange to produce a commercial model of a Nile Steamer perhaps they could have a go at a tank to go with these figures.

Now that would be cool! I know we have seen other companys do WW1 Tanks but the figures never really got my attention. these are the 1st matte WW1 figures to really grab my attention so I'd like to see a Britains Tank to go with them.

Craig

It is nice to see Britains continue the WW1 range - have been collecting them for the last 2 years. But where are the adversaries to all these
new British soldiers? They only produced two German figures thus far for the 1916 series - unlike the Opening Moves series there are hardly any
German figures. They did produce a very nice WW1 tank in 1999 and I was able to come by two of them at very reasonable prices. They are
Matte and aged looking even though they came with 4 Glossy figures. It would also be nice to have some French Poilous in the Grey-Blue uniforms - nevertheless the new British figures are a must have for me - they are excellent.

Well I'm in! Just preordered the SL edition Tommy on ladder, excellent looking set, guess I'll be building a trench later this year{sm4}

Rob

Got a hunch with Ericka's infulence Randy both Ken and Richard will grant your wishes.{sm4}

One of more recent pasttimes is the geneology research of my family . . . an interesting way to read about Americna history through the lives and activities of my ancestors. I always new my grandfather served in WWI. Recently I discovered he, his younger brother, and my grandmother's brother all served in the same unit over in France. My grandfather Chester W. Wagner, his brother George A. Wagner, and my grandmother's brother Gerald E. Meeks were members of Co. F, 17th Engineer Regiment. All three enlisted in July 1917 and weere part of the Amwerican Expeditionary Forces from 28 July 1917 until 25 March 1919 . . . all three were honorably discharged in April 1919. I also recently inherited my grandfather's photos he took while in France during the war and also my grandmother's photos from the home front during the same time period. The entire collection of photos gives a great pictorial history of the times between 1917-1919 . . . .

This information has really sparked an interest in me for the Great War to end all wars and I am seriously thinking about collecting the WB WWI line. My thoughts thou are . . . . Do I start now or do I wait for the appearance of the American doughboys . . . . . I am leaning seriously towards starting now so I won't miss out on some of the newer LE figures and sets . . . .

I just pre-ordered the "British Vickers Gun On the move" set # 23022 (thank you for information PolarBear:smile2:). Next I'm going to pre-order the Lewis gun set and the ladder sets here from our hosts.
Absolutely fantastic looking sets by WB! Please keep the WWI stuff coming!

BASE HOSPITAL #8[/B]

In my grandfather's WWI photos are several pictures that he identified as Base Hospital #8, Savenay, France . . . . the photos remind me somewhat of the photos posted by Randy (polar bear) of the setting for Downtown Abbey . . . Here's an aerial view of Hospital #8 taken in 1918 and a short history of its roll during WWI . . . From the description below and my grandfather's photos, his unit, the 17th Engineers must have been involved in the construction of the additional wooden buildings mentioned in the history . . . . .

BASE HOSPITAL NO. 8

Base Hospital No. 8 was organized in November, 1916, at the Post-Graduate Hospital, New York City. The unit was mobilized at Fort Jay, N. Y., July 18, 1917. After 10 days of drilling and equipping the organization embarked July 29, 1917, on the Saratoga. On July 30, shortly after midday mess, the Saratoga, while at anchor in New York harbor, was rammed by the Panama, and so badly damaged that all passengers were disembarked and transported back to Governors Island. The unit lost most of its equipment and personal property on the Saratoga, but after a week of reequipping embarked again on August 7, 1917, and sailed the same date on the Finland.

The unit arrived at St. Nazaire, France, August 20, 1917, and next day took station at Savenay, Department Loire Inferieure, base section No. 1. Base Hospital No. 8 was the first hospital to arrive at Savenay, and formed the nucleus of what was to be one of the largest and most important hospital centers in France. It occupied the normal school of Savenay, a large, white-stone building, which it transformed into a hospital. In addition to this a number of wooden buildings and storehouses were built by the engineers, so that the normal capacity of the hospital in November, 1918, was 2,460 beds. This hospital received both medical and surgical cases, but from August, 1918, was devoted entirely to the reception and preparation of cases for evacuation to the United States.

The first patients were received September 22, 1917; 35,244 sick and wounded were cared for during its activity. Base Hospital No. 69 relieved Base Hospital No. 8 January 31, 1919, on which date Base Hospital No. 8 ceased to function. The unit of Base Hospital No. 8 was broken up in March, 1919, and sent to the United States in charge of convoys of patients, and was demobilized April 28, 1919, at Camp Lee, Va.

There were no doughboys that I am aware of at Somme Mike and WB might pickup doughboys in 1918 for which the one current release is. I would not wait, we've got the makings here for an awesome Battle of Somme representation. So glad to see WWI addressed with the same vigor as Zulu and ACW.

Couldn't agree more Donnie and its just what I've been thinking, these will be just superb for a 1st July 1916 Somme dio. Got some early plans going round in my head already.

Rob you should consider these three iconic Somme sets recently released - Royal Field Artillery 18 Pound Gun and Crew, British Vickers Machine Gun Section and British Gun Emplacement.

I have probably 200 Britains figures in my collection, but only 2 are not Civil War. That will definitely change this year. These WWI figures are just too good to resist. Well done Britains!!!! I am starting with the 2-man Vickers set and the 2-figure ladder set. Of course, I will need one of the trenches for those guys at some point.
