The Duke of Wellington decreed that the British Forces were not to steal or rob from the locals when moving through occupied lands, unlike the French who 'lived off the land'.
They had to pay for goods and services and so try and not to have the locals antagonised and forming a guerilla force, like what happened to the French in Spain.

I this scene in 1813 as they entered Southern Fance, Sharpe and his patrol are arranging supplies with a couple of girls for a night's bivouac.

No, I didn't make the building, it was made by a local friend of mine who does some wonderful dioramas.
He's a retired architect, so 'has the eye' for details and the skills of constructing building both miniature and 1:1 scale

This another one he did for a WW1 scene showing the Signals Corps dispatching pigeons on the Western Front.
I painted the figures for him because he can't paint 'little men' but he can paint buildings.

Very nicely done John. Well staged and photographed. Food supply might be a little tight in the village and even though they are willing to pay for their supper, Sharpe and his comrades might be the introduced to "stone soup".
